Good to see Apple helping with the devastation in Japan.
I'm in Japan. Send me a cheque and I'll pass it on to those who need it. Just don't gush about how I'm helping, 'cos passing on money doesn't interrupt my daily routine and certainly doesn't dip into my wallet.

Best to go out of the way and donate directly to Red Cross. No sense in the money being handled by any other third party - no matter altruistic they try to be.

I am going the Google route as they are partnering directly with the Japanese Red Cross. I think the American Red Cross is great, but I would rather see my donation go directly to the Japanese.

Its great to see this. I tried to give, but it bounced back, I had to contact my credit card, then finally it went through.

Donate to the Red Cross directly, nuff said. I would donate through itunes if Apple did at least a match. Apple explicitly states that 100% of your contribution goes to the Red Cross. So no need to worry about Apple profiteering through charity.:D

I was going to donate through itunes but there is no point. I donated to Red Cross directly and got a receipt directly from the Red Cross.

Now if Apple matched Contributions by even something as small as 1% then I would have contributed through itunes. I am sure Apple and its employees donate to charity individually, but does anyone know if Apple offers any matching programs on charities? Matches are not and should never be viewed as a prerequisite to giving but it is nice to know how much an organization actually gives especially if they partake in the collection of charitable donations.

Thanks MacRumors for posting this important issue. It's great to know that humanity hasn't lost its "humanity".

Do what you can, anything, if not donating there is always other ways to help. :)

What's the direct link? Thanks!

The American Red Cross is partnering with the Japanese Red Cross as well.

No iTunes store credit? Does that mean the donation won't be taken from the $21 I have on my account from a giftcard? This money's just going to stagnate there forever, isn't it? Also, why does Apple take paypal from iTunes but not on their online store?

The money will be taken from whatever credit card you have set up on your account. The gift card balance will remain.

It will actually collect your donation in Yen instead of dollars. Although the site gives you an estimate of the conversion (1600 Yen = $20 USD).

That speak volumes about how greedy apple really is. GOD forbid something like this cost apple one cent. Charging to the credit card Apple take out the credit card processing fee (1-5% depending on the card) and pass on the rest. If iTunes gift card apple has to eat that fee and it comes out of Apple profit. It is sad and truly pathic

This donate to red cross threw iTunes is nothing more than a feel good by Apple but clearly it cost them nothing. They do just enough to look like they care but truly do not.

Apple I do not believe does any real type of donations and I bet does not match employee donation up to X amount lile a lot of other companies. MS for example match all employee donation to a charity up to like 2500 a year and if you donate time they will give like 40 per hour to the charity.
BP I know has a simular policy and I know Google as well. Apple I believe SJ kill that department and stop it in the name of greed.

there is no way apple or any other organization will be pocketing this money. There are rules regarding this stuff. I am sure apple will be making a big donation too, albeit, anonymously.

Rules?

Like the rules that were in place to regulate the whole entire financial system?

...and how did those rules hold up in the face of financial collapse? Bailouts and more Bailouts to the same thieves that stole in the first place.

wish it were a matter of rules... I appreciate the sentiment. but....

Went to Apple's page from my iPod Touch and didn't see the Red Cross logo.
So how about it Apple? A way to donate from our iOS devices?
If anyone finds a way, please post.

Apple doesn't allow charitable donations through apps... at least that's what they said as an excuse to shut down the guy who made the wikileaks app.

interesting, huh?

Pure speculative BS. We know you hate Apple but not a fact in sight.

I'm not buying what you are trying to sell there.

Beyond that, someone trying to donate simply off a balance off a card that someone else bought them could be called greedy for only wanting to donate with money that wasn't their own to begin with. To an extent money is money, but since you are calling people greedy, I thought I would throw that out there.

I do not hate Apple but I can see you can not stand Apple be called out for what it is. A Piss poor corporate citizen.

Let go threw some known facts that make it very easy to draw the conclusions.
SJ is consider one of the worse billions in terms of how he donates (more so complete lack of) he money.
SJ kill off the departmebt in apple that was about giving back. Fine when he did it but now that apple is doing great it should of been brought back. Nope still not done.
Kill off there education discount more and more from what used to be pretty good to pretty much non existent.
Apple used to supply entire computer labs for schools. Do not do that any more.
Apple is blocking iTunes gift cards from being included. Looks like to that they are refusing to do anything that cost them any money.

Accept the fact that Apple is a poor example to live up to. Walmart is a bett

Well let's see some people have very little extra money they could give and far amount of it tied up in iTunes gift cards. I am going to call Apple out on it BS here because it is nothing more than a feel good.

Donate straight to the Red Cross. I bet they get better exchange rate from the CC companies. I willing to be CC company just charge then cost. Compared to if gone threw Apple more is taken out because the CC companies are going to charge there agreed rate with Apple which has profit for CC in it.

The burden is on you to prove your BS, not him. Otherwise, we'll just assume you get your facts from the same place as Rodimus Prime.

No burden on me. Thanks for the offer, just don't accept that.

I just challenged people to do research... now someone wants another droplet "spoon fed" to their infantile minds... and thus believe, again, what ever they read.

I don't, do you?

tra-la-la...

I just gave $25 ( i'm cheap)

I trust Apple, and they make it easy, so this is great.

I"m very anxious for these people.

If it was given to them, it is their money to use. You don't understand the concept of gift if you think a gift card is some one else's money that some one is using.

Also, that gift card is still money to them. It's money they don't have to spend on that item that they can spend elsewhere. Just because that money can only be spent on one thing doesn't mean it's not money to them. It's still good for getting "stuff". Donating a gift card amount is saying I give up being able to get this stuff or I will have to spend money I could have used elsewhere on this stuff but I'd like to see it go help some one. They are still giving something up when they make a donation off a gift card.

Maybe if you ever get on a tight budget you'll realize that a gift card still means money to you even if it is only good on one thing (especially if it is a gift card towards something you have to buy vs. stuff you don't need). It means money you don't have to spend on that item that you can spend somewhere else.

As for why charge the credit card? I ask why won't apple let you choose which to use? I know that there have been times I have itunes credit that I'd rather use my credit card (well, one specific time when my credit card was going to re-imburse me for a few songs bought with their card on itunes. My CC was nice enough to re-imburse me for the itunes credits I used as a credit back on my CC but I'd rather still have the i-tunes credits and the CC can't really do anything about that, they did the best they could. But since Apple insists on taking it off the credit first, I no longer have those credits. Why you ask that is so important to me? Cause I am on a tight budget and those credits were given to me and it was like being able to justify buying a few apps/songs that I cannot justify buying with my money. I'll admit, purely psychological as I obviously can use the money elsewhere, but it was nice having those credits, thinking I could get an app, and I didn't need to worry about wasting my money on things I don't need as much).

Yeah, sure blah, blah. But this is easy, and it's a link away.

How much did you give?

I couldn't care less if you criticize Apple. All I ask is you use facts and not your feelings. Your post brought up a bunch of nonsense that has nothing to do with what we were discussing.
