iphone Air & iPhone Pro

iphone Air & iphone Pro are the new designations.

Apple would never make a phone larger than the perfect 4" size

instead they are developing a shrink ray device to make yourself smaller when you feel inclined to look at a larger screen and then go back to normal when you don't

that's Apple innovation

Waiting for up-votes... come on guys, validate his humour!

:p

Smell the coffee...

One simple question. Why on earth has it taken Apple so bloody long to come up with a bigger screen iPhone?

The appetite for bigger screen smart phones has been happening for the past two years.

Well, if they want a much larger iPhone

Why not put a phone chip in the iPad Mini and be done with it? I still prefer a phone that fits in my pocket and can be used with one hand.

Do you know why Apple wants bigger phones now?

It's NOT because of you, customer. It's because they need more space for bigger batteries. It's all about what Apple feels is right to do at some specific time.

It's because Aihal actually gave an answer based on something other than a generic phrase - fragmentation. His explanation has no similarity to what you've been saying.

It's because it has to be explained a million times before people seem to understand, after a while you give up. How about doing the research yourself.
Or are you telling me that his explaination is what's going to be the turning point for most people? Give me a break.

Well that would make sense. Imagine the next iPhone has 3x better battery life than the next best phone on the market. That would be killer.

Listen, consumers are NEVER happy. If they DO release a larger iPhone, you'll all find something else to moan about next time round.

Patience is a blessing... Apple know that superb design is not rushed. So, are you going to complain about how long they took MORE than if they released a rushed product? I think people like to complain for the sake of it, which is strange really - I always find life is far more pleasant and enjoyable when one focuses on things that THEY can affect, and make better, instead of bemoaning the perceived flaws in everything they over-analyse and get hung up on.

Today, right now, it's 4" max - deal with it or moan about it, whichever makes more sense.

Just curious what "innovation" your life is missing right now? I don't need innovation for innovations sake or because some techies are bored. This Tuaw piece sums it up nicely for me:

It is the innovation that will propel AAPL back to a reasonable trading multiple - it is an investors perspective that I am commenting from. Additionally, Tim has been talking on and on about the new product categories for 2013 and 2014 - time to deliver is upon him - tick tock tick tock.

From your question though:

ala carte Apple TV content so I can cut the cable
vastly improved Apple TV interface
Apple TV 4k capability
4k monitor
Aperture 4 raw processing and faster / expanded camera compatibility
Improvements in Maps, Siri

The list could go on depending on who you ask.

I comfortably use my LG G2 with a 5.2" screen in one hand. What kid of girly hands do you all have that you can't operate a 5" device with one hand? The only time I ever use two hand on my phone is in landscape mode while watching videos.

I use my friends 5" Galaxy S4 with one hand very comfortably all the time. I'm a petite woman with tiny hands. People have to find a better excuse.

What? Like they were from 98 to 01, 01 to 07, 07 to 10, 10 to 14?

One thing is certain: If some meaningful innovation takes place, it will be because of Apple. That could be today, or in 2020. You can't count on Microsoft, Google, Samsung and the useless pawns to innovate.

wow you are delusional if you really believe that

Apple is product-centric, foremost. Don't bore us with shareholder demands - you'd have no shares if Apple weren't so good at what they design and produce.

Find another random stock to buy if you're unhappy with Apple's "performance" - it's just numbers and cash to you, after all; we could be talking about aggregates or shares in Virgin for all you care.

I'm "delusional" too then, and the massive majority of members here. Maybe this is an apt time for you to ponder the name of this site...

So you're saying all innovation is from Apple? Define meaningful vs unmeaningful innovation.

There is no way you can navigate a large phone like that with one-hand like you could a 3.5" iPhone. Laws of anatomy.

You're putting words into someone's mouth.

Microsoft are an OS giant, Google are a search giant. Apple are the usability and design giant, bar none. Expanding one's area of interest does not instantaneously grant you the inheritance of years of knowledge, careful consideration and wisdom in a field you've only just entered into.

It's true Apple has the most years in doing hardware design compared to Microsoft & Google, but both are rapidly catching up. The Surface tablets are truly excellent innovations and the Chromecast dongle was a surprise.

Apple releases continue to sell the 4s (aka iPad 2 of the iPhone world)

This gives you three different iPhone sizes for your consumers, while keeping ... the still capable 4s.

I don't want a still capable phone - I want the 4 / 4s form factor with ALL the latest internals - Geez.

It's not a moan, as much as it is a question. They will come out with a bigger iPhone, we know this. Just why did they take so long? That's all.

And no, unsurprisingly, you didn't answer it by saying 'superb design is not rushed'.

Even if Apple does provide the best phone option, I find it harder and harder to justify paying $750 for one, when I can get increasingly almost-as-good options from competitors for $250-500.

All the more amazing considering what Apple accomplished with the iPhone in 2007.

The thing is it took Apple 5.5 years from initial conception to market for the original iPhone. Then you see all these other companies(Samsung, HTC, Motorola, Sony) scrambling to get ANYTHING to the market based on design & implementation cues from Apple's half-decade of R&D. If it took Apple 5.5 years then how would it take anything less from another less-capable company to come out with a true game-changer?

It has been for several years now.

You have to wonder why a company with such gigantic fortunes and staff can't revise every device every year to jump ahead of the market instead of catching up to it. Their iPads and iPhones get attention while most other products languish in corporate disinterest.

Its not quite that way. When they released a 64 bit processor in the iPhone the rest of the industries jaw dropped. Its now on the edge of being more close to a desktop processor now. Probably for-telling of something new in the future.

They managed to to do a finger print scanner right, something none of the other manufactures did. Even Samsung when they came out with their own several months later was still not as good or accurate.

People seem to forget that.

How do you reach the corners of the 5" phone with your thumb without changing your grip? After using a number of phones I found with phones bigger than 3.8", I can't reach the corners without repositioning my hand despite having a fairly large hand. That includes a giant phone that makes the Galaxy S4 look small and a tiny one that makes the iPhone look big, along with many others inbetween.

I don't disagree about the utility of having a phablet for many people, and that's where the growth market probably is given the size of the Asian market. However at the same time I'm saddened by the disappearance of smaller form factors since the only <4" phone left at this point with a top processor is the iPhone and that's going away soon too. I already find even the 4" display a bit bigger than I'd like for one handed usage.
