So upset by this. Dark Sky’s app and website is so easy to use and read. By far the best weather app. Apples weather app design is horrible and sadly I doubt they will inherit the dark sky design.

Apple will buy Google soon and will shutdown Android, will refund the money to all those that bought android devices too. So both companies are cease to exist. Old school Nokias are back on the menu boys!

I really, really like Dark Sky. I feel a bit sorry for those that will no longer have access to it. Hopefully there will be other apps. out there than can fill the gap for non-Apple users. Is there any history of Apple fans losing apps. to Android?

In my town, the stock original weather app that gets its data from weather.com is consistently very accurate for current temperature and temperature forecasts.
I also have the Dark Sky app and its current temperature and forecasted temperature in my town are grossly wrong. Often by 6°. Even when I choose any location near me - temperature is always off. Both lows and highs.
In my town, the Dark Sky data is worthless

I'm a massive fan of dark sky. Still my favorite weather app. Really hope Apple does a good job using it. As a person that did a startup that got bought, I hope the developers continue to improve their standing in the framework of where they want to be. It's a mad mad world. :)

Can someone explain what was so great about this app?

I live in Australia and have never used it and barely heard of it, but keep seeing posts about how amazing it is.

Tech forum denizens tend to overstate the “amazingness” of apps they deem superior. Mostly it boils down to using and promoting anything that is not Apple. Usually the comparable Apple app is declared garbage and useless. The egos of fake tech nerds know no boundaries.

i like the rain starting and stopping predictions That are location based. They are relatively accurate. Better than any other weather app. I’ve found. I do also like Weatherbug.

When Dark Sky can differentiate between humidity and rainfall, I'll be happy.

If this is what Apple is using for the rain forecasts in the weather widget its terrible. Hasn’t been accurate for me yet.

The iOS Weather App uses The Weather Channel as its data source,as can be seen in the lower left corner. Previously it was Yahoo Weather.
Hopefully this acquisition will greatly improve it.

A couple of quick thoughts:
First, Carrot Weather uses Dark Sky. Will that now become an issue?
Second, remember when SIRI was a stand-alone app? Apple purchased it
and now it is more readily available and life didn't cease to exist as we know it.

This totally sucks

Slow your roll. Apple is far and away the underdog compared to Android, and there are hundreds of weather apps.
If you think the Dark Sky acquisition was about an app then you rather missed the point what Dark Sky did. It is about the data, and what you do with it. And the Dark Sky data was made available through its API to many other apps like Carrot for example.

It is not about the app, it is about the data and what they do with it. And their model precipitation forecasting is just absolutely awesome, it is increadibly accurate with a superb time resolution. I mean when it says it will stop raining in 20 minutes, it so often is accurate that I do trust that.

But yes, as far as I know todate they only were able to get radar data from the NEXRAD and NIMROD systems to augment the other sources. The model they've build is just awesome. And they kept it protected and thus is very valuable to have and commercialise. Undoubtedly other countries can benefit as well, but then they need to make the data available.

Yes, it will, they'll have to find another provider. And will lose its magic, as without the data from Dark Sky it simply can't do all those notifications.
