explain?

Was this a hostile takeover? No.
Did the developers negotiate selling to Apple? Yes

not every acquisition is about stomping out competition. Many small companies develop apps with the hope that Google, Apple, Microsoft etc comes a calling.
Absolutely, but many companies develop software with the purpose of meeting the needs of users and/or solving specific problems users currently experience—they're not necessarily only trying to do that for the users of one OS/company.

Can Apple acquire a calculator app maker so we can get a stock ipad calculator app since it seems they can't make one.

In my town, the stock original weather app that gets its data from weather.com is consistently very accurate for current temperature and temperature forecasts.
I also have the Dark Sky app and its current temperature and forecasted temperature in my town are grossly wrong. Often by 6°. Even when I choose any location near me - temperature is always off. Both lows and highs.
In my town, the Dark Sky data is worthless
Where is your town located?

I’m one of Dark Sky’s (and its previous version) biggest fans. I love it and can’t imagine living without it. Adam Grossman and the other owners wouldn’t have sold it without serious consideration. But for its future? Well, things evolve and change and if Dark Sky someday also changes, I accept that‘s almost inevitable and I’ll move on. It’s just a weather app.

So upset by this. Dark Sky’s app and website is so easy to use and read. By far the best weather app. Apples weather app design is horrible and sadly I doubt they will inherit the dark sky design.
Ok the beta of ios 14 I’m getting precipitation updates on the widget showing me the same thing I was getting from dark sky with the updates on rain. Shows a little graph on the widget when it’s raining too.

It would seem that if Apple is holding until EOY 2021; then they are likely to release Weather to CoreLocation or CoreWeather at WWDC 2021. It would be a shame to completely waste a technology that has that user base built in; but this is why I say likely.

Well... that's divided among literally hundreds or even thousands of companies. Certainly you're not that out of touch.

"Hundreds or even thousands of companies" use Windows for their devices, but I guess Apple is the dominant player in the PC market with their 17% marketshare, right?

You really killed my argument by mentioning unrelated things. It seems you don't understand that this is a phone thread.

"Hundreds or even thousands of companies" use a certain operating system. Yet, you're saying somehow a phone market is wildly different than a PC market, even though the phone is essentially a computer.

What you're saying is the most stupid thing I've ever heard. Feel free to reply, but I'm done. I will not be reading anymore replies from you.

This totally sucks

Slow your roll. Apple is far and away the underdog compared to Android, and there are hundreds of weather apps.

Based on numbers its true - but regarding profit which enables Apple to develop and/or acquire applications is what matters. Now this sucks for Android - but I think Google should pay more attention to its application space as it provides half hearted support to anything outside Search/Mail/Docs.

Apple is building a platform to provide the best applications across its ecosystem. It is now accelerating that effort.

Google relies on third party developers alone which is a mistake.

If only there was some way to download a calculator app on the iPad. Oh well, maybe someday.
That’s crazy talk! Why, I heard of one gent who tried to download a calculator app to his iPad, and aliens came down in a UFO and whisked him away. No way I would try that - too dangerous! So, we sit, helpless, in the dark, hoping in vain that one day Apple will add a default calculator app to the iPad.

Apple is not the underdog by any means... Apple is a company, android is not. Its an operating system used by many companies. And it just happens that in this world we live in that company called Apple is the most valuable company in human history.... so yeah they can do whatever they want and nobody can do anything about it!

Apple stomping out creativity and innovation. Great job!

Actually Apple has been doing this all their lives. I believe all of : OS X, AppleWorks, FileMaker, iTunes, Siri are bought.
Sad though we no longer see much innovative software from Apple its all about the hardware.

This totally sucks

Actually, Apple is the only other dog. Its the only real alternative to Windows and the only real alternative to Android. Its oligopoly.

Most of them have ads and require payment to remove the ads. This is hardly the point, however. There's literally no logical reason the iPad doesn't have a built-in calculator when the iPhone does ... and the Mac does ... and literally every other device in the last 30 years does. There's no reason not to have it. It's arbitrary and bizarre.

This is strange - doesn‘t Apple try to build app services like TV+, Arcade, Music - and now they buy an app with a huge consumer base and a weather service and they shut it down.

Doesn‘t Apple understand that services are always multiplattform?
Services are a revenue stream, while the dark sky app was a one time purchase.
