Apple-Acquired Dark Sky Officially Shuts Down Android App

Apple stomping out creativity and innovation. Great job!

lol what? If anything Apple is encouraging creativity and innovation by giving the developers of the app a nice payout for their idea. It’s every startup’s wet dream to get acquired by a company like Apple.

Are they getting incorporated into the iOS 14 built-in weather app?
(Dark Sky is still on AppStore for $3.99 now)

Apple in March purchased weather app Dark Sky, and at that time, Dark Sky's developers said that the app's Android version would be discontinued on July 1, 2020. However, instead of shuttering the app on that date, the app's developers announced that the discontinuation would be delayed for another month.

Now that it's August, Android users are no longer able to access the app, and subscribers who were previously active will be receiving a full refund. Dark Sky previously said that its API will continue to function through the end of 2021, but no new API signups are being accepted.

Dark Sky was originally planning to shut down weather forecasts, maps, and embeds available on its website on August 1, but the app's developers today said that weather forecasts and maps on the Dark Sky website will remain active for the time being.

I’m excited to see it implemented in ios and I hope that they keep the core functions that made the app so successful (precipitation graph view, alerts, etc.) Bummer for android users though, it would be nice if apple could leave the Android app running like google did with waze. But I do understand that Apple and google have different business models and what works for google doesn’t necessarily work for Apple.

Can someone explain what was so great about this app?

I live in Australia and have never used it and barely heard of it, but keep seeing posts about how amazing it is.

Minute-by-minute forecasts for your exact position, as opposed to other apps that offer ~15 minute forecasts for the town, ignoring the fact that weather takes a few minutes to go from one end of town to the other.

In my town, the stock original weather app that gets its data from weather.com is consistently very accurate for current temperature and temperature forecasts.
I also have the Dark Sky app and its current temperature and forecasted temperature in my town are grossly wrong. Often by 6°. Even when I choose any location near me - temperature is always off. Both lows and highs.
In my town, the Dark Sky data is worthless
This was the case for me when I lived in Phoenix. Dark Sky is hot garbage there. Now that I’m in SoCal it’s much more reliable, but their long term forecasts still need work.

So what are you all going to use instead? Apples app is still way too limited. Even in iOS 14.

Looks like a really nice app. Not gonna pay $4 for it though, given how predictable and boring our weather is here. Would be curious how accurate it’s rainfall forecasts are, as Weather Channel and Accuweather are abysmally wrong every time... but then again when we go four months without rain all the time I guess it’s kinda hard for the models to ‘learn’ much.
Your area may be particularly hard to predict like you mentioned but DarkSky’s hailing feature is it’s accurate precipitation readings. In NY it’s pretty spot on.

Why do you have to stop using DarkSky? It’s been shut down on Android, not iOS.

The Dark Sky features that have been integrated in Apple’s Weather app are welcomed. I would like it to integrate all the features though. Radar being the most important. Then different measurements (wind gusts speed, humidity, dew point etc.)

Apple is now an IMPERIALIST COMPANY under the leadership of dictator Fuherer Cook. What a shame ! I don't have Android, but feel for them for the loss of a good app.

Ugh, this whole Tim Cook bashing is getting very old. Did you see the article where Steve Jobs did some similar stuff?

The Almighty do no harm perfect Steve Jobs intentionally blocked Kindle purchases.

(Fast forward to 2032)

Now, in iOS 26, control your own weather bubble with iHAARP. iHAARP harnesses the power of the iPhone 24s Max Pro's 8g radio antennae to disperse cloud formations within a 3 metre radius above your current location.

Dirty car? Simply ask Siri to send a localised rainstorm to clean it for you.

Other manufacturers have tried to control the weather, (video clip of Android users being struck by lightening or scorched by intense sunlight) but only iPhone gives you peace of mind that your socially distanced BBQ can go ahead.

(Slogan on screen: "Don't get left in the rain")

THE END

Apple should have simply rebranded the app & keep it available on Google Play for a little extra stream of income.

People who live their lives and make their plans based on a weather forecast are destined to be disappointed.

Nice interface. Might be accurate in cities and other densely populated places but I have found it woefully bad at predicting low temperatures in rural and wilderness areas as I’ve traveled the US West by motorcycle these last three months. At least five degrees (F) too high, always. Once it said 48F overnight and I woke to frost and numb toes. Every other app I have is more accurate (Weather Channel, Accuweather, Wunderground...). Waste of money, for my usage.

Tend to agree. I live in an area with some rolling terrain, so I get lots of bad forecasts from Dark Sky. For example, it's sunny now but Dark Sky is showing rain for the next 60 minutes. Hopefully they will fix this some day. For now, I prefer Accuweather's app which does not have the same problem.

Is it your approach to intelligent debate?

The point is that Apple’s own software should be at least functional.

Single developer third-party widgets are more functional at the moment than something that Apple owns - with tens of thousands of developers working for them!!
It may be your point, but it isn’t according to Apple when you read their conditions of the Beta program. 👍

Intelligent debate 🤣

It is massively overrated with an interface that requires to much clicking to see each weather measurement (temp, wind, humidity, etc).
It’s about the data and the precipitation algorithms. That is where the value is. There are much better UIs through other apps that utilises Dark Sky’ API.

Apple stomping out creativity and innovation. Great job!

explain?

Was this a hostile takeover? No.
Did the developers negotiate selling to Apple? Yes

not every acquisition is about stomping out competition. Many small companies develop apps with the hope that Google, Apple, Microsoft etc comes a calling.

It would be nice if Apple stopped charging for this app. Ever since Accuweather got updated (terribly) I’ve been looking for alternatives. DS is recommended most often, but paying $4 for a weather app, let alone one that Apple just acquired, doesn’t make sense
