This has FAIL written all over it. As some other posters have already mentioned, this should have been addressed in iOS4 if not iOS3.

Unbelievable the lack of urgency on Apple's part. What it tells me is that they don't even give a ****!

I'm not sure I understand this... :) I mean, I hate, hate the iOS notification so bad, I ditched iOS as my primary smartphone (after bearing with it through iPhone 3GS and 4) in favor of an otherwise much less capable Blackberry due to the terrible notification system (I came from Palm Pre).

BUT... this warms my Apple fanboy heart that they are going to (hopefully!) fix this glaring error in iOS... why complain that they didn't do it earlier? :D

This needs to happen ASAP!

I hate coming back to a iPod full of notifications, or rather, one. It needs something on that huge empty space on the lock screen and to handle them better on the menu too.

I'd be in favour for Widgets and Live Tiles. They're really very useful.

I love the drop down task bar in the android phones! But that idea is already taken, so I really wonder how apple is gonna perfect notifications.. i predict the phone app to have some changes...

What I want to see in the iOS is the ability to save pdf and word documents in a downloads file, creating folders for those file.. more flexibility to move stuff around..

i would love to see an option to "hide" the apps that come with the iphone that u never use...

Can't wait for all the notification system apologists to suddenly love the new system and pretend they hated the old one.

It's quite possible that they've already been working on this system behind-the-scenes for a year with the WebOS guy, and this resource is just additional help. Apple keeps engineering efforts in silos to prevent big leaks like that.

I understand the quote it's just that sometimes you don't always have to re-invent the wheel. Apple already differentiates themselves from their competitors with their closed app system, proprietary software and what not. In essence, they are already giving them the car if you will, it's just that the horse is still better at letting you know when it needs maintenance. ;) I'm all for them coming up with a better system. At the very least they should have a system that is on par with their competitors.

I see what you are saying. Sure, sometimes you don't have to reinvent the wheel. And maybe Apple will make their solution to notifications like everyone else. But the post I quoted was nothing more than suggestions of a faster horse (maybe more accurately, a different color horse.:)) And maybe a faster horse is the best answer, but it's still just a faster horse.

I don't agree that they don't give a ****...

It's just that Apple looks for ways to perfect things. Just like they perfect multi-tasking (in my opinion)

the drop down menu for androids is a great idea, but i highly doubt Apple will imitate someone in a very similar way.. so i can't wait to see how they tweak it. and I think they'll do a fine job.

My top 3 fixes for iOS are as follows:

3. Better notifications (I don't get that many now, but when I do, they're annoying).
2. Lockscreen info
1. Added support for background download of information (update Instapaper in the background. Also, The Daily badly needs this after the complaints of how slow it is).
2. Lockscreen info as in time, date, battery life and cellular/WiFi indicators?
1. You mean Task finishing that we've already got?

Please, elaborate.

I'm not sure you understand the connection to Ford's quote. I completely agree that the iOS notification system could use an overhaul. The quote referred to the fact that the proposals in the post I replied to were all specifically copying things that had already been done.

- smart" (like what Google is doing with their 3.0)
- Widgets (Android)
- Live Tiles (WP7)
- a file system for photos, videos, etc.
What the hell is Live Tiles?

I love iOS, the only drawback is indeed the notification system. If I unlock my iPod fast, I see the notification too late, and then I can't see it again. And I don't really have that many problems with it, for the few times I get the notification. But the few times I get one I often have a problem, can't image how frustrating this would be if I had an iPhone, receiving 100+ notifications a day.

So they are rather late, if they still have to find someone for this job. I sincerely hope they already have a system ready that's better.

A suggestion I heard once is either they add an additional screen to the left of page 1 where Spotlight is now and have it be notifications. The other option is to make the notifications list show up on the same page as Spotlight.

Um, that's not a good use for that quote. It's pretty much well established that the notification system in iOS is not good. Apple isn't giving an alternative product that is better here in this situation.

Jailbreak it, takes 3 minutes. Literally. Then have a nice lockscreen feature taking care of all of your messages.

Why has this taken them so long? What we've all wanted for so long is a notifications screen with a list of all the recent notifications with an API call for developers to use. That, and a quick settings/favourites pulldown, you can get to from any iOS interface screen.

My fear is that by acquiring Boxcar they will make it another Apple app alongside voice recorder, compass, and the stores. You will have to fire up the app for notification management. I really hope they don't do that, and build it seamlessly into the OS.

We also have to look at how they would implement it. Using more than two fingers isn't a good option since iPhone screen real estate is too small. Tapping the status bar at the top goes to the top of a page. Pinch to zoom like gesture doesn't seem like a good way. Best I can think is some sort of swipe up from the bottom.

Either way, I am sure some functionality will disappear. Think along the lines what "multitasking" took away with the home button.

I'm sorry, but I just don't understand this.

Are you honestly trying to make me believe that a computer firm as massive as Apple that have been producing computers since the late 70's can't manage to program a box that pops up on screen and says you have some messages/notifications, with hotlinks that jump to the relevant program?

Isn't that utterly pathetic?

It's not exactly man on the moon type stuff is it?
Why would Apple even begin to think it needs help to put together just a basic thing?

Really puzzles me.

well, better late than never I guess. Hopefully this new notification UI will be ready for iOS 5. They really can't wait til iOS 6 to introduce it (but I fear they will).

I think it's just a design decision.

It's really not that hard to move the notification to somewhere less intrusive.

I think someone in Apple just think it's a good idea to be in the middle of the screen.

Well I think what's more likely is that the senior management has some sort of affinity with the current pop up system...and it's simplicity (a more appropriate term would be primitive). And for the past few years have honestly refused to change it because they see nothing wrong with it. I suspect that is why we didn't see multitasking for such a long time....I think they were kind of forced to do it by popular demand they could no longer ignore. I don't think it's laziness as much as stubbornness. They will overhaul it though, even if they have to do it while being dragged kicking and screaming into it. It's a huge huge huge drawback to the iPhone considering it actually has decent competition now and it's not the only game in town.

Umm.. That's how it currently works.

Isn't that utterly pathetic?

I think that has more to do with your understanding of the issues involved than any problems on Apple's part.
