I completely disagree with everyone saying this will not be out this year..it will most definitely be a part of ios5.. Its not going to take that long to implement it.. Everything won't have to be reworked.. Look at the notifedapp for jailbroken phones..works with the current system..

My simple solution would be to add another screen to the home screen, possibly one left or right of the search screen, that has a log of all of your notifications. Just swipe your home screen over to that screen to see all of your notifications or unlock to this new notification screen. No need for an extra app to run, no need for the Android-style pull-down screen (I think this idea would interfere with how iOS is setup; just think about how you tap the top of the screen in Safari or how voice recording and calls can be running simultaneously at the top while you're switching apps), no need for the webOS-style dashboard (although I'd say it's pretty similar to Android's), and none of that Windows Phone 7 live tiles (although that's kind of similar to iOS's badges) and/or notification at the top.

Well I think what's more likely is that the senior management has some sort of affinity with the current pop up system...and it's simplicity (a more appropriate term would be primitive). And for the past few years have honestly refused to change it because they see nothing wrong with it. I suspect that is why we didn't see multitasking for such a long time....I think they were kind of forced to do it by popular demand they could no longer ignore. I don't think it's laziness as much as stubbornness. They will overhaul it though, even if they have to do it while being dragged kicking and screaming into it. It's a huge huge huge drawback to the iPhone considering it actually has decent competition now and it's not the only game in town.

Its the same when a large media company redesigns its logo and has an outside firm do it even though they have a staff of about 1000 artists. Companies want an outsider to look at it a new way, its called thinking out of the box, the box being the company.

I can just see it now, Apple's new notification UI

"We think we have it down, and the best UI and we call it Announcements. You just triple tap the home button and Boom here is your list of Annoncements. It is just gorgeous !! "

:p

Jailbreak then download LockInfo.

Not perfect, but a whole lot better than stock notifications and pop ups.

In addition, the notification system needs to be able tie into the iOS email. For example, I'd like to have a completely configurable alert system that would allow me to parse incoming mail and SMS messages to look for certain bits of text. I would then want to be able to alert myself if I saw those text patterns.

To me, this is hugely important for people that provide any kind of system tech support. As a CTO, I need to make sure that my systems are up and running, and that there are no security issues either. I frequently use tools like ipMonitor and Orion to send email and SMS messages should an issue be detected. In the Blackberry world, I used to use MessageAlerts; however, in iOS land, there's no such tool...and AFAIK, there's nothing in the iOS SDK to allow me to create this type of application.

Umm, why don't you just read all your emails? As a CTO you should and not rely on a 3rd party notifications to do the job for you. I hate tech people who don't read their emails...

WTF - this implies that they haven't fixed this yet?! I thought for SURE it would be fixed for iPad 2 announcement. If they're just now buying the company I wouldn't expect a notification fix for a bit. And I expected a new notification system when the 3GS came out :-/

Android "copies" pinch to zoom: Android stole our idea! Thief!

Apple "copies" Android notifications: Innovation!

As a CTO, I'm sure he has more e-mails than he can read through on any day. If he sat there and read everything from everyone, he wouldn't get any work done. I can hardly keep up with mine and I'm just an engineer.

Just saying—if Apple is just now getting around to buying some company to fix notifications, we won't see it this summer. Maybe a fall update, but even that is pushing it. Hopefully all the major pieces are in place, and the outside company would just be polishing up the look and possible interaction with the system.

Heck, even Win Phone 7 has a better notification system!

My thoughts on iOS 5:

Better notifications / connected services
UI color redesign / slight structure redesign
More customization options
Integrated payment system for new iPhones w/ RFID
AirPrint for everyone
Better system performance / lower memory usage with new xCode compiling
Some sort of further integration with Macs via Lion (and wireless sync?)
Ability to install certain, hub-style apps to the lock screen (think special section of app store, and you can only use one at a time, like changing wallpaper, you select from your list)
Some new gestures
There are more that escape me right now...

+ custom text tones.

Exactly, I would love this as well. Email/text rules would be awesome and make my life so much simpler! Another problem I have is that I get loads of emails from different accounts - I would love a notification showing how many emails I have from the separate accounts.

Hummm.... seems like a simple thing to just correct with hiring more engineers... does this company hold and interesting patents regarding notifications?

Personally, all I've only thought a couple good changes would make it better.

1, add a "Later" button to the "view"/"Cancel" choices. Or have it just go away after 5 seconds if you're on the phone and have it re-appear when you hang up.

2. Add more settings in Preferences so that I can turn off the visual on the notifications. Sometimes I don't want them to show up.

3. Like some have said... some way to get at a list of current notifications would be cool.

But none of this requires a company purchase... maybe an engineer hire?

never having a smartphone prior to iPhone 4 and not really looking too much into other smartphones and their notifications, I am FINE with how they are...Only things really popping up for me are...Calls and Words with Friends.

Yeah. I'm thinking the same thing. I have the iPhone 3G s and get notifations for texts, call, and assorted application. I don't see any problem with the current notification system. Then again, my iPhone is the first mobile phone with any type of notification system so I don't have a baseline in which to compare it/ judge it.

A CxO's job nowadays is to read and reply to emails. What other work besides that is to be "done" there? :D

A company purchase would be like hiring all those engineers at once, and the managers and supervisors to run them all, and everything else, maybe even whatever patents the company holds, plus they already have iOS experience, putting apple ahead of the curve vs new hires ;)

Doesn't really help the economy though :(

Come on now, you think spending that big paycheck is easy? It takes time (or the right woman) lol

Seriously though...managing resources on that level, is very time consuming, and in order to be efficient, one needs to screen e-mail and any other form of electronic communications. If you don't cut the clutter out, you're in trouble.

Gmail users have two possibilities, neither of which is admittedly ideal:

  1. Have google sync only push "important" messages to your iPhone (this is done by using filters to "mark as read" all "unimportant" messages).
  2. (Rube Goldberg windows solution) (a) Use gmail filters to add a specific label to all "important" messages. (b) Use growl for windows and something like "Scott's Gmail alert" to monitor messages with that gmail label, and then send out growl alerts. (c) Use the "Growl for Windows Notifo Forwarder" to forward growl alerts to your iPhone. Of course, the free notifo would have to be installed on your iPhone.
There's no real solution for SMS, though (but you could cobble together another Rube Goldberg solution using Google Voice SMS -- exercise left for the reader :p ).

The more I see stories about iOS notifications the more I hate them. They are so intrusive. If they aren't fixed in the next version I'm going to be so disappointed. I think there is a video somewhere of guy getting spammed with notifications so he can't even use his iPhone. There was some kid that pissed off Justin Bieber so Bieber gave out the other kid's mobile number on Twitter and the kid put up a video of the deluge on YouTube. WTH was :apple: thinking with these horrible notifications?

I could have sworn they hired the man responsible for webOS' notification system some time ago, am I mistaken?

Yes! this needs improved. One of the biggest problems with iOs and one of the best things about android.
