Your post makes sense... except for the fact people pay a large premium for these things, and as such expect an equal amount of precision. Plus, I feel the real problem is how easily they bend in day to day use (in a backpack, etc.)... not the few that come bent from the factory.

Apple uses a soft aluminum shell, that they sell us as high tech material; on top of that, they make the thing way too thin. I mean... couldn't they make it as thick as the camera bump?? It would make it much stronger, as well as drastically improve battery life... and it would lie flat on a small surface like it should. Function follows form is the new standard; I returned mine after having high hopes.
If the iPads are bending in normal use, that's a real problem for all iPads. I'm a bit sceptical about this bit. I'm more inclined to believing some units being bent out of the box. Of course there will undoubtedly be a number of people that have bent their iPads, but I'm sceptical it's from normal use. I've been pretty rough with mine and had it since launch day. Nothing suggests to me that it's fragile and likely to bend in normal use. Of course if I put it in a very tightly packed bag and throw that around, I won't be surprised if it bent. That's physics.

The article is describing "The Bend Issue" of which a subcategory is Apple's explanation about 400 micron tolerance. The actual story is bigger, as reported by users. Apple doesn't get to control the story here, the users with bent iPads, and the reporters/bloggers covering that phenomenon, do.

Having it your way, it looks like iPads aren't arriving bent, of which they are.

What's the alternative, that MacRumors only post Apple-Approved Images™?

This is the original post source that borrowed the image used in the above article: https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...ot-have-a-case-did-you.2160723/#post-26917783

The poster doesn't understand how his $999+ 12.9" iPad Pro is bent. What is going on? Some arrive bent already (way above 400 micron tolerance) and some are bending quite easily with use (which may or may not be a users fault, depending on your perspective or what you know about that user's handling habits).

Either way the story is bigger than Apple's statements. Apple statement only addresses their standards—it in no way, shape, or form is actually addressing why some iPads are coming in visibly bent, or even the ones bending further in use (you can browse the forums for examples).

You’re sample size is way to small to draw conclusions, and the biggest problem with the MacRumors exposés are the way they put a magnifying glass over what I don’t believe is a widespread problem—also misleading viewers by usin that clearly beat the F up iPad as the story lead.

The internet always loses their collective minds when there’s a legitimate Apple problem... But when it’s relegated mainly to MacRumors—paired with this kind of lacking due diligence in reporting—I can’t weigh in, except to say that the salacious gossip looks like gossip, and that my experience with the 2018 iPad in no way makes me think it’s fragile.

To claim that iPads are coming “bent in boxes,” that’s based on what exactly? The ****** who brought them home bent? With zero knowledge that accepting a bent product is not in their best interest? It doesn’t make sense. Apple’s said they’ll replace an iPad outside of their very tiny tolerance margins. So if people are magically finding taco’s for iPads, buying them, bringing them home and complaining—it seems the issue lies more with them than Apple. (Some people honestly *need* to play the role of victim.) Aside from this story not making sense, it uh, doesn’t make sense... I’ve never blindly defended Apple, and before I found out how weak the evidence behind this article was, I thought Apple was out of line too. I am brand agnostic across all my electronics. Do not care who makes what, or what Tim Cook had for breakfast. I try to buy the best product regardless of maker, and my standards are the same for all manufacturers.

Buyer Beware

Apple’s stance regarding bending has been updated.

According to a customer report:

So I visited my local Apple Store in order to discuss the bending on my 2018 iPad Pro.

Spoke to a genius, and told them I had read Apple’s Support guidelines explaining the issue.

They told me the two outcomes from this are:

– Bend is within tolerance, no action taken

– Bend is outside of tolerance, paid replacement needed

Looks like Apple has found a way to not take responsibility for any bend.

Looks like I won't be updating my 10.5", if the new ones in October have a design like the 2018's. My 2017 is still "straight as an arrow", as far as I can tell, and that's what matters.

You know, quite a few of us have our Apple products delivered after placing an order online. After returning multiple bent iPads, which in itself is a hassle, I lost confidence in the product.
