no it's not. they said the formula has been wrong since the original iphone

Where did they say that? I'm postive that's not the case, they changed it during the release of the 3G after everyone complained about low signal and dropped calls.

yea the ONLY people who should EVER use the word "Frak" needs to be fighting Cylons, are you fighting Cylons?

On Topic note: I'm not updating.
Actually he could be a Cylon. And he could don't know it. :D

Hey Popeye. Apple was the one saying it was a software problem, not some Rumor. Having an iPhone that has dropped over 20 calls on me (business calls) it a total failure on Apple's part so quit being a fan boy and wake up to the facts that this product has a serious problem. Get your head out of Steve's groin.
No, he's not a fanboy, and you seem to be just a typical MR whiners.
The 4.0.1 was intended to fix the field indicator accuracy , and it did. It isn't a fix for signal strength.

BTW after reading weeks of post here, I started to think iPhone 4's antenna clearly isn't a great idea, but your biggest problem is the crappy 3G network existing in the USA. EVERY ANTENNA attenuates when covered. iPhone 4 antenna just attenuates a little more if touched in the right spot. But if you have a good signal it's not a real problem.
The problem is that you don't have a good signal.

I updated to 4.0.1, and to be honest, I held the phone like I normally do. But this time, it went down to 1 bar, then back up to 2 bars without dropping 3G. Before, I would hold the phone the exact same way, and would eventually get "No Service" right after it dropped to Edge. So yes, this 4.0.1 did fix the issue (at least for the past 10 minutes for me).

I have finally and succesfully updated to 4.0.1...after many trials and failures. As expected my iPhone shows less bars...I never had the call drop issue and had 5 bars when the phone was not held and 3 to 5 when held (death grip included). Now when not held it shows 3 bars most of the time and 4 in some cases...when held it shows 1 bar most of the time and 2 in some cases.
What worries me (for good or bad reasons) is that i am living is a very strong signal area (Paris, France)...I now wonder what will happen if I go to a average/low signal area...I will have to check this out.

Anyone else having trouble backing up their iPhones on 4.0.1 (I have 3G). The error messages are coming back with something like the iPhone refused the request.

iPhone update error

I was updating to 4.0.1, and now my iPhone is stuck in "connect to iTunes" mode.

The restore gets all the way to 'Restoring iPhone firmware" before it cancels with the error "The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown eror occurred (9)."

Every. Single. Time.

The error basically said there's a faulty cord/usb port. There's not. I've tried another computer using a different cord and it does the same thing.

What can I do??

How did they not find out about the algorithm problem until now? Or did they think people wouldn't find out?

I hate this update by the way. It made me realize just how bad reception in my house is. It seems to be more accurate because when I did the death grip on my 3GS it would drop to 1-3 bars from 5 bars. Now it just hovers around 1-3 bars. I guess this issue and the people actually experiencing dropped calls on the iPhone 4 are a completely different issue.

An unknown eror occurred (9)

Apple Support said:
Error 9: This error occurs when the device unexpectedly drops off of the USB bus and communication stops. This can occur if the device is manually disconnected during the restore process. This issue can be resolved by performing USB isolation troubleshooting, using a different USB dock connector cable, trying another USB port, restoring on another computer, or by eliminating conflicts from third-party security software.

Update and restore alert messages on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

I've updated to 4.0.1 and though I'd share my experience...

Previously I would hold the phone with the death grip and it would go from full bars to 1 bar and stay like that in a good reception area without losing 3G... in areas of poor reception it would go from a couple bars to no service.

Now with 4.0.1, in a good reception area, I get no more than 3-4 bars, never full bars... when I hold the phone with the death grip it will drop to 1 bar 3G and then down to Edge... ultimately gettin 2-3 bars of Edge... service doesn't drop.

Software 'fix' might make the transition from 3G to Edge or standard 2G a bit more seemless without going to 'no signal' in areas where there is good reception. In areas of poor signal however it's a different story for me... I will go from 3G to no signal and the phone often doesn't find a 2G or Edge signal... just stays at no signal. I've had to resort to switching off 3G in areas I know I won't get reception.

I have a similar problem with Windows 7 machine. I did the update and now it's just doing a slow flashing of the apple logo on the phone! iTunes does not see the phone and I can not hard reset the phone by hitting the home and power button.

Any ideas what I can do!?

problems with new update

Anyone having problems with updating to the new 4.0.1? I updated my iPad with no problem and then tried my iphone 4 and got an error 1004 saying could not do the update. I would fail when it go to the baseband update portion of the install every time. I called apple and the tech told me he had had calls all night from people with the same problem. The only common thing was the tech told me was I was on a WiFi connection. Prior to him calling I went to my iMac and tried the update and it worked perfectly. I even went as far as copying the ipsw file from my iMac to my MACBook pro and it did the same thing again with the same error. does anyone else have an idea why this would happen or how to fix it?

To narrow this down as my phone is now a brick. My iPhone is stuck on a flashing Apple logo. I have:

Have iPhone 4 32 GB
Latest iTunes on Windows 7 64 bit
Tried on another Windows 7 machine
Did repair install of iTunes
Did hard reset of phone (held power and home button for 10 seconds)
Restarted my computer

My result

Before I updated my iPhone 4 to ios 4.0.1, I usually got 5 bars. With the death grip, I could drop it to 1, but never no service. After I updated my phone, I got 4 or 5 bars. I know I have good reception here, so I was a little surprised to get 4 bars. With the death grip, I can drop it to 3 bars and can't get it drop to 1 like before I updated my iPhone 4. With the bumper on, I can drop it to 4 bars.

I've run the speed test, the results are interesting. When I did the death grip, I got better data connection, when I left it on the desk, I got slower data connection. However, sometimes it's the other way around. The voice quality doesn't have any noticeable change when I do the death grip or not. I really can't say it's better or worse now. "It's a mixed bag".

I will make an appointment with my local Apple store, I want to see if their replacement phones are any different than what I have now. (I called the store before, they said they don't have any retail box iPhone 4, but they have OEM version replacement phones that have neither accessories nor retail box.)
