Not sure if anyone agrees with me, but I too find the first bar a little disproportional. I know it's being pedantic.

would it not have been better for them to add an extra bar at the end and apportion accordingly. Then the first war wouldn't be so "high" but would still have solved what Apple were trying to achieve...

Did anyone read the user agreement and make sure there wasn't anything in it that might possible screw upgraders from the possible recall tomorrow (if there is one).

I read it and didn't pick up on anything but I'm not that experienced at all this lawyer talk.

I believe that iPhone an iOS software "update" actually reinstalls the entire OS each time and does not "patch" software like MacOS.

Can anyone tell us why this is?
Basically because Mac OSX is a SOFTWARE, while iOs is a FIRMWARE also.
When you update your Mac firmware, it is entirely downloaded each time.

iPhone 3Gs user here living in Sweden. It seemed to have lost one bar indoors. Haven't tried it outdoors yet.

Also, it still drops down to one bar when I'm holding it in my hand. Very annoying.
Actually you have "lost" NOTHING. The signal strength indication is just more accurate.
Is it so difficult to understand ?!?

I find it odd that the iPad 3G doesn't get these new bars visually and the new calculation formula.
Mine seems to have gotten the new formula, but not the bars...

(But it could be because it still on the floor, in the corner, next to the Mac mini, where the reception is the worst in the whole apartment; still charging after the upgrade ;))

what?

What? are you saying you think there might be something in the EULA or something that says, "if you buy this phone you agree not to participate in a recall if the OEM deems the phone defective and in need of an exchange?"

You can return the phone RIGHT NOW at anytime for a refund and reset of your upgrade. I fully expect that time limit to be extended if anything.

Just updated to 4.0.1 and the Grip-O-Death (or Stray-Finger) still causes signal loss. Should have known better doing the update when it's purely a hardware design flaw.

Take your phone back...or wait till tomorrow and find out what apple is gonna say and do. You obviously have a defective iphone 4. Some of us are good.

new way of showing bars based on signal strength

THIS is a useful post. We need more posts like this. Clear information on topic, not a bunch of groaning and complaining.

...although it's nice to know when an update is going to bomb my hardware. ;)

Either Apple steps up and fixes this issue once and for all tomorrow or its back to a 3GS for me..... 4.0.1 was no fix at all.

Why would anyone want to go back to the old 3GS? The Iphone 4 is so much faster and better. Just take your iphone 4 to the apple store and get one that works. Its that simple.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not after you.
The timing of this update is suspicious to me and doesn't off much, why not what until tomorrow where they can stand by their decision that this isn't an issue and offer the update then to those that still remain?

I decided to wait, if its just a cosmetic thing it can wait until further details emerge.

I remember when Apple updated the bars last time. It was either the 1st generation or the 3G. It's been a couple of years. I thought it was a little suspect at the time. Now I really think both are a little suspicious.

Before: 5 bars in house
After: 1 to 2 bars in my house

How did this help me? Why does Apple think they can fool use with this useless update?

iPhone 3GS

PS: I can now make the signal drop from 2 bars to 1 with the "death grip"

Does anyone remember awhile back when Apple updated the bars to show a stronger signal? I do....

Certainly makes it look like I have a better signal here at home, even though I obviously don't! I'm now in the previously tiny 3 bar band..

Tommorows press meeting is going to be strange. I wonder what they have up their sleeves. Good luck to them!

Also has anyone noticed that this has slowed their data rate down significantly even without doing the death grip.

Using the speed test app...

With 4.0.0 and the iPhone lying on the desk, i was consistently getting 1500-2000kbps.

With 4.0.1 and the iPhone lying on the desk, i am now consistently getting 200-300kbps.

Note: This is happening even when NOT doing the death grip.

If i do the death grip i can easily get it to drop from 3bars to "No Service" every time within 30 seconds.

Same thing here. Much slower data rates on 4.0.1. My bars are still at 5 with no death grip applied. When I apply the death grip, bars go from 5 to 2. I never had a death grip problem before this update. Nice going Apple, you made the problem worse!:apple::confused:

Bit random all this! I used to be able to get a complete loss of signal before, nows its ok, lowest is 2 bars (which is all irrelevant anyway, Apple can fiddle with the bars however they like)

Using Speed test app before update i couldnt even get it to measure a data transfer, now (after update) its giving me a min 1gb download!

So, i seem to be the only person on here thats seen an improvement?!

Ive been testing my iphone using Speedtest for a few weeks now, debating returning it as it was so bad. Now im happy, but will still wait and see what Apple are saying.

And Safari is working much much faster.

Ok, Seriously!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Vodafone UK here... The signal has gotten worse! HOW THE FRAK is that possible!?!?!?

I am so pissed now!

They better recall or refund! this is a disaster!

Just take it back already!!!!!! I can understand being upset over the first week but if you haven't taken it back by now you have only yourself to blame.

my iphone 3gs has gone from always having 5 bars at this location to about 3-4..

edit: faster download speeds on 3g with speedtest, although im now down to 1-2 bars, even though the ATT tower is at the end of our apartment complex.

Depending on its height, you may (ironically enough) be *too* close to the antenna on that tower to be covered by it. Cellular antenna systems are designed to broadcast in essentially a donut-like shape. Too close to an antenna above or below you, and you won't get a good signal.

I was having a problem connecting to my Exchange server before. Now after this update it seems to be working. And Yes I already had the patch for exchange issue installed.
