Why? An Apple refurbished item is just as good as a new one. Same 1 year warranty and blemish free. You just don't get a pretty white box with it; You get a plain brown box. Is the pretty white retail box worth $360?

I've never had any problems buying from Apple's refurb store.

I just received a refurb touch bar MBP and mine came in a sealed white box just like a new one. Except it does say refurbished on it. Don't want to jinx it but so far, it's working like a charm. It has every appearance of being brand new but with a nice savings.

Moving forward, I'll definitely check out refurbished products, i.e.: iPhone X when it's time.

Still a terrible value. Besides, it's been a year now since Apple dumped the 2016 MBP onto the world, the Touchbar is still a silly gimmick and the USBc bet hasn't gone anywhere. A year of nuisance for nothing, if not Ive's obsession with thinness.
Must be why PC makers are including USB C ports on new models, and Microsoft getting slammed for no USB C on new Surface Laptop.

Not an exact match, but HP Omen for $999

https://www.walmart.com/ip/HP-Omen-...ics-Card-12GB-Memory-1TB-Hard-Drive/630174927

Core i7-7700HQ
15.6" Full-HD IPS Display
NVIDIA GTX 1050Ti 4GB
12GB RAM (1 x 4GB, 1 x 8GB)
1TB 7200 rpm Hard Drive
Backlit keyboard

Swap out 1TB hard drive for 500GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD for ~$160
Replace one of the 4GB RAM with 8GB RAM to give you 16GB total for $80-$90

Even with hardware upgrades, you're still at almost half the price of the Macbook Pro.
Wake me up when it can run MacOS why do people post these comparisons?

I never really understood this line of thinking...do you spend your time using the OS or using the apps and get work done? Do people buy TV's based on the TV OS and not on the quality of the display? I use the OS to launch programs and copy files. I don't care if it's Windows or macOS (although I find Windows better for such tasks). Apps, to me, are the same and if I can get a similar hardware config/performance for half the price, makes sense to me!

I think you're in the minority my friend. I buy Macs because of the OS. Windows is clunky, mismanaged, and the overall user experience is just a pain. I've worked with both in professional settings and when I get onto MacOS, it just feels so much better. Sure if I'm just working on a file in Photoshop, not a big difference, but my computer is my workhorse, entertainment, organizer, etc. It's like saying, why buy a nice house (macOS)? A small shack (Windows, not hating, just making an analogy) will still provide shelter and has a bed (Applications), for a cheaper cost. I like the comfort of the nice house. Maybe you don't mind a house with less niceties, and thats where most Windows and Mac users differ. Windows machine zealots bitch about price and performance, while Mac people, value the OS user experience and aesthetics.

The screen resolution is also a lot less than the MBP.

I did a BTO on hp.com and for $1499, I got

Windows 10 Pro 64
Intel® Core™ i7-7700HQ (2.8 GHz, up to 3.8 GHz, 6 MB cache, 4 cores)
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1050 (4 GB GDDR5 dedicated)
16 GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM (2 x 8 GB)
15.6" diagonal 4K IPS anti-glare WLED-backlit (3840 x 2160)
512 GB PCIe® NVMe™ M.2 SSD
4-cell 70 Wh Lithium-ion polymer Battery
No DVD or CD Drive
Full-size island-style backlit keyboard with numeric keypad
HP Wide Vision HD Camera with dual array digital microphone
802.11b/g/n/ac (2x2) Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth® 4.2 combo

That's $540 less than this base refurb 2017 15" MBP and I get a higher resolution screen, double the SSD capacity, and better/faster GPU. Processor is just slightly slower.

You've never heard of Hackintosh?

Give it some time and it will be done if it hasn't already

Because there have been folks who've switched from OSX to Windows (or back to it). One MR user posted how a Windows setup only costs half as much as a new an equivalent OSX one, and that includes the prices to replace all the software he used on the Mac. Don't get him wrong.. there are numerous things he doesn't agree with Microsoft on, but at the end of the day, he can just get work done in a timely manner.

I've had a couple Mac users say the savings you get from less maintenance on Macs can vary. Average case, it comes out even vs. Win.

Hackintoshes are a PITA. Been building them for years. Although it’s nice to have more powerful hardware with macOS, it’s hardly a flawless experience.

Also, I wasn’t debating that Macs aren’t insanely overpriced, because I feel they are.

That's probably the one I bought last month and returned the next day because it couldn't even hold my iTunes music library without having to carrying around an external 2TB drive. I never even got to my photo library. Useless.
Did you not read in the specs that it was only 256 GB of storage before you purchased it? Do you not know how large your music library is?

I love how on one line it is a 770HQ, and in the limited description it is the correct 7700HQ. Gotta Love Wal*Mart.

As stated above, that is not a comparable product, it lacks a P3, or better yet HDR display at high resolution. It is also a plastic gaming laptop, Not running 10 Pro (according to HP’s specs on their page) and not really the same market as compared to an Aluminum or other more premium case materials used in the market the MBP competes in.

The other point is that it isn’t shipped and configured similar to the MBP from the respective OEM. Apple notebooks are also cheaper at Wal*Mart, Best Buy, and Microcenter, but that isn’t the context of this discussion.

I think we are all aware of Windows laptops being cheaper than the MBP with matching or better specifications, but the price delta, when configured nearly the same or better, isn’t as big as people think. As an aside, one thing that remains true for most Apple laptops, is a great resale value.

It is better, but still a plastic gaming laptop, intended for a different market.

IIRC the display is not P3 or HDR, which is important for photography / video editing. That laptop is also significantly larger and double the weight of the MBP, if you are configuring the gaming Omen UHD laptop.

Including it and removing everything except it are different narratives.

I'd like to see some research about adoption of USBc enabled computer models and peripherals, because in my professional environment, extended network and all the clients I've worked with (in Europe), USBc is all but an oddity.

Everyone knows Macs are higher priced than PCs. But PCs don’t run MacOS. And some users run Linux, Windows and MacOS on their Macs, which they can’t do with PCs.

Yes, I know people steal MacOS software for hackintosh’s but real businesses don’t even consider that to be an option. Mac buyers are willing to pay for the value they get, and aren’t interested in stealing, just as they buy music and video instead of stealing that.

You can price all the cut rate PC hardware you want, but if it runs windows, Mac users aren’t interested. It sounds like you’d be really happy with your 1,499 laptop, and that’s great, buy it. But a lot of pros who don’t want to fight with Windows find that Macs are a better value.

Also, a lot of Mac sales are to small business/ enterprise. Businesses know even if they spend $1,000 more for a Mac, it’s still a better value—they’ll more than make it up with increased user productivity, lower support costs and higher resale value. TCO is a valuable concept.

No, I defined used. Checking something that is used works and then selling it is not refurbishing it. To refurbish something (by definition) you have to replace something. If Apple put a new SSD inside, or changed the outer case, or put in a brand new screen, sure call it refurbished. But the above is just used.

Put it another way - my so-called definition of refurbished, what exactly differentiates it from used? it is literally the same. Again checking that something works before selling it is common courteousy, not refurbishing.

Not sure you know the definition...
So here are some definitions for you.

Right? A few more:

refurbish
/riːˈfɜːbɪʃ/
verb
1.
(transitive) to make neat, clean, or complete, as by renovating, re-equipping, or restoring

refurbish
Refurbish, in everyday language, is "to renew or to restore to a new condition and/or appearance". In the computer world, refurbished equipment is not necessarily defective in any way; it may just be "old" (a relative term in the world of computers). When hardware is refurbished, the components are examined and non-working parts are replaced.

:D

Of course, this post is helpful if the above still doesn't register:

what happens to them?

the 'G' key (for example) stops working? the whole thing stops working? keys fall off?

(i haven't paid much attention lately)

i'm currently teaching Rhino to a guy with a 15" 2017.. idk, i like it as far as i've been able to tell with a few uses of his.. or, it's sweeter than my laptop at least and i like my laptop.

oddly enough, the thing i worried about most was esc since i use that key a lot and i read a bunch of people complaining about it around here.. tried it out a few times and it seems totally fine and usable imo.

i'll keep an eye out for any weird keyboard issue i may see over the next few months.

Not only is the escape key easy to use, the entire keyboard is just a joy. It's a little louder than I'm used to, so I could see this being an issue in a really quiet environment. But I actually picked up a keyboard cover. It's extremely thin but seems to cut down on the sound quite a bit. And the the keyboard almost feels better with it on too.

I think Apple did a great job on this laptop and I love it.

And I still cannot recommend this laptop to any 'pro' I know. It's been a year since the release of these questionable redesigns in the MBP lineup and I've yet to see Apple's USBc bet catch on. If anything, they are a sustained nuisance.

Get your hands on a maxed out 2015 refurb MBP if you can, and you can thank me later.

I was actually waiting for the refurbed 2017 15" MBPs to show up, but decided to get a maxed out 2015 instead. Besides saving about $400, I just decided that for my daily driver I much prefer the older style. It's not uncommon for me to have 2 USB 3.0 devices plugged in plus an SD card. I also occasionally need to use FW800 devices. I know I can accomplish that with dongles or a dock, but I just like having it all built in.

I just bought a 2016 MBP refurb and it came in the box, just had a little sticker at the bottom that said it was a refurbished unit

These macs are way too overpriced now and there are never any deals anymore. Don't know what to do, I need a new laptop and I wonder if there will be ANYTHING for black friday?

Just bought a 2016 refurb, 2.7ghz i7, Radeon 455 and 512 SSD. Upgrading from a 2011 2.2ghz i& with 1TB SSD and the 2016 model is soooo much faster. The 512SSD is plenty space for me, in fact, it made me get rid of stuff I didn't need anymore. I love TouchID and am slowly getting used to using the Touch Bar, but it's not like I can't live without it. I LOVE the form factor, thinner and lighter. This is my secondary machine, so I don't have to hook things up to it too much and don't mind the lack of ports. I do miss MagSafe, I'm scared to death every time I have to plug in power.

You could do a search on past Black Fridays for comparison. Look at refurbished, look at amazon.

There are just some little things in macOS I like compared to Windows 10. When you use it, its like a little spark goes off in you brain and you wonder why they didn't think of doing that. Both are decent general purpose operating systems and I don't have a problem with either.
