So ... different owners, same massively overpriced, crappy products?

Still scratching my head over why Apple would bother with acquiring Beats in the first place.

I guess because despite having an idea about how to make a tv system works since forever at this point, they have been unable to sign the necessary deals. On of the cofounder of Beats has very good connections at Hollywood and he is respected and known in that circuit.

The headphone community is alive because of placebo effects. The so called experts are just as influenced by branding as the know-nothing consumers.

Yeah I hate to say it, but I don't really buy the whole audiophile thing haha...but I just let them be...if they claim they can detect differences in music then so be it

Of.course this could be cuz my ears suck!

Bose and Beats - two brands I walk right on by, at the local Apple Store.

I used to think that until I purchased the Bose Soundlink Mini and Bose Wireless headphones. I have to say the build quality is outstanding and the sound quality is much better than anything else I tested. I had a few issues setting up but their customer service helpline is also excellent. I would certainly buy Bose again.

I have been to 4 different Apple stores in an effort to give Beats a try. Each time I put a pair of them on and press play, only 1 side has audio. It's a shame to expect people to purchase without even getting to hear what they truly sound like. You would think Apple would be all over this less than ideal customer experience.

I hope you told them? I'm sure they're not purposely displaying defective units

The business of one person having hearing not precisely like someone else's is moot. Surely you want the sound to be as near to what you would experience were you in the recording studio. There, your own personal "ear-coloration" would not be adjusted for: you're used to it. Looking at it another way: if you happen to have more of one type of cone in your eye than someone else, that doesn't mean you automatically turn your screen more blue: you still want a screen which is as flat in response as possible, so that what you see on the screen corresponds to what you see in real life. The same should be true for your ears (and btw, there is generally much less variation in our natural hearing than in our vision).

In any case, the argument here shouldn't be about what one person prefers: the headphone literature states that "you hear your music the way the artist intended". That means they must have a flat frequency response. Beats headphones don't. Whether some people feel they sound good shouldn't feature in the argument: if they do not have a flat frequency response (and let's be honest, no headphones do) then this surely is false advertising.

Competitive speakers coming out of stores?

I would assume that all other speakers and headphones will no longer be sold in Apple stores now that they own Beats. Makes no sense to to push direct competitors products in your own stores.

They do that now with cases, covers, chargers, adapters, etc., and Beats doesn’t cover every speaker and headphone option (like ruggedized/waterproof), so I can’t imagining them selectively dropping some 3rd party products.

These. Have this exact model (yes, even the X). Look up any review on these then look up the price on Amazon. Have your credit card ready.

How do these compare to Grados? (Grado Labs headphoes) any one know?

I am very tempted to buy a pair of studio wireless headphones but am waiting for Apple to release something cooler.

I have a theory. If Apple wants to make a push toward HD music, as some previous Macrumors articles have suggested (and I sincerely hope so since Apple is pretty much responsible for ruining the audio quality of the music industry in the first place), there is still the problem of iPod and iPhone hardware; they aren't built to handle high definition audio output. Even with high quality headphones, the iDevice's cruddy DAC and low power output would bottleneck the sound. They would never beef up an iDevice for any reason, so they would need a new type of headphone to be able to pick up the slack; a battery-powered one that plugs into the lightning port, bypassing the iDevice's DAC (or maybe wirelessly via airplay), and uses its own built-in DAC and amp. (I believe there is one pair of headphones in existence like this but uses USB, which is the Audio Technica ATH-D900USB, but it seems to be completely unknown.) I think rather than letting other headphone companies make all the money off of Apple's HD push, Apple wants to be at the forefront of the market and make their own line. Rather that starting from scratch, it's more cost efficient for Apple to buy out a "hot" and "up and coming" headphone company, such as Beats. Yes, their quality isn't all that great, but hopefully they have plans to change that with these new products. This is my speculation and hope.

Maybe you're waiting for what I described in my comment above. ;)

Imagine a Beats Inspired Watch. The bWatch. Has a nice ring to it...
With all the sounds that your iPhone makes blaring off your wrist so that everyone knows you have an iPhone.
Now there's a brand promotion synergistic idea...

You guys who doubt the audiophile communities’ ears, no need to be atheist about it.

Sure, there is the fringe element among audiophiles, including those who detect sonic differences when speaker cables have been lifted off the floor and rested atop special support nodes.

It’s a question of knowing what to look for in sound. Bass can be exceptionally deep without sullying the mid range or the high notes. It just costs more for a quality product that’s been tuned for that kind of output. Which does not correspond with Beats, whose primary focus is style and Beat’s association with popular artists. No unlike the sneaker business.

Beats are by no means bad headphones.
Compared to what most people own they are very good, but then again most people doesn't spend much money on them.

However there are much better headphones in the range Beats are selling.
I own several headphones and I used different pairs for different music.

Where I live the Solo 2 costs more than Beyerdynamics 770 pro, or Grado SR80, which I both own (so I might be a bit biased), and they far inferior to both in different categories. If you want something bass heavy the 770 are better and more balanced, if you want a brighter and more open sound the Grado is also far superior. The SR80 is half the price of the Solo 2 here btw.

I think the Beats Solo 2 use 40mm drivers, so the ATH-M40x would be a better comaprison. Half the price, but not close in sound quality.

The ATH-M50X use 50mm drivers, and are certainly very close in sound. Both have a bit of a V shape sound, neither are flat or analytical. Which is "better" depends on personal preference - I couldnt clearly pick a winner (although like i said in a post above, the M50 do have impressive sub bass, if thats your thing). Compared to the Solo 2, the M50 are not attractive, not portable, and quite heavy on your head. Solo 2 easily win on style and portability.

In my country, there is less than $30 between the two (M50x to SoloV2), so its certainly a much closer race than people make out, or than it was if comparing the M50 a few years ago (at about $120) to the $200 beats solo V 1 (which did sound pretty bad).

I wish Beats would actually tell us their headphone spec...

Too the boogadie boogadie Beats y'all  ok,ok,I know!

Beats headphones are (past tense now)licensed from Monster! so you may find the specs by going to Monster and find what headsets Beats is using!

may be true, but unfrtunately they look like '****', which is a no go for a product people literally wear on their head.

I agree that they don't have a lot of 'bling', which is exactly why I like the way they look. They look professional rather than flashy, I'm not trying to make a fashion statement.

Plus the sound quality is quite good. And the price is very reasonable.

it's a hit or miss with Sennheiser:
- their PX-100: very good
- their newer PX-100 II: not so good

I was disappointed with my NR Sennheiser PXC 450 headphones. The sound quality was OK with NR off but really quite poor with NR on. I decided to replace them after a few years and tried Bose, Beats and Sony NC. I only really use them on air travel. I thought the Bose and Beats were too bass heavy and not mid range clear enough for the classical music I mostly listen too and the Sony were just plain poor. In the end I have bought AKG 495NC, which are excellent and you cannot tell the difference between NC on and NC off. AKG have really got their act together since being bought by Harman Kardon, as the wireless headphones I bought about 10 years ago were a major disappointment.

I'm 20 and had never heard of him either.

I don't understand what age has to do with anything here. Yeah, I'm 56 years old and have no idea who Dr. Dre is, but I seriously doubt it's my age that has anything to do with it.....

Yeah, I'm a Big Beatles and Paul McCartney Fan - But also a BIG Sinatra fan which is WAY before my time,. As I sit here typing this morning, my iTunes is churning out Joyce Manor and State Champs, 2 of my favorite bands (at the moment of course).....

Good music doesn't belong to any particular age group.
