If it's anything like the Retina iOS devices were, it's not an effect you can appreciate until you see it in person.

... I am suddenly noticing how very pixilated the inner curve of the MacRumors Apple icon looks.

That's new?

I'm still on 10.7.2, and my cursors can go high-resolution...

Oh please let their be a retina display mbp in the next refresh. Got my fingers crossed

(Okay... retina display rumor again...!)

Okay... I know how to spread rumors too...

Love the new pointy-glove-hand! The old one looked totally mid-90s. Now it looks like something from the late 90s!

Wow, pretty useless! You should be entered into the World Book of Records for such discovery DaringFireball!

I was just looking at that for a few days. I only really noticed the finger looked like it had a curve to it.

I've been having issues with 10.7.3 on my iMac and hope they address them soon. I'm not updating my MBP until they do.

I would LOVE a supper high res 27" iMac. Oooooh so lovely. :D Fingers crossed!

I don’t see myself wanting to lug anything larger than 11”, since I have big external display at home. But an 15” Air/Pro (optical optional/external, super thin) with retina display is something I’d want really badly!

A retina-display iMac would probably have more pixels than my last six computers combined...

He didn’t discover it, just reported it, same as MacRumors. And it’s a clue to something VERY useful, and an unusually good clue at that: solid clues straight from Apple are rare in this business! Definitely blog-worthy, and well worth the time to comment on :)

Well this just killed my plan on getting a 27inch cinema display.

Retina 15" Matte Macbook Pro with next-gen i7 and 512gig SSD and 16gig RAM in Air-like form factor.

512GB SSD - I doubt they'd offer that.

More likely to be 128 and 256GB configs...

I could live with 256 myself (just).
480 would be good but would make the end price horrendous.

Essentially a 'Retina Display" would allow us to order a stock MPB without having to specify the optional 'hi-res' display which would be nice.

....so I'd say the "Retina Display" 15" would be something like this (realistically):
• 15" MacBook Air-like form factor
• DualCore i7 2.2
• 128GB SSD
• Retina Display
• 512MB Video (possibly with some extra as part of some on chip thingy)
• 4GB RAM
• USB/Thunderbolt I/O
• No optical drive

A killer version (sold as a stock machine) would be more like:
• 15" MacBook Air-like form factor
• QuadCore i7 2.4+
• 480GB SSD
• Retina Display
• 1GB+ dedicated video
• 8GB RAM
• USB/Thunderbolt/Firewire I/O
• No optical drive

Ok so you'd want to be able to expand it to 16GB RAM of course.
Having all this stuff in a thin form factor is a hard task - heat/size etc.
But hey its Apple, and even the fact Mr Cook dismisses A5 chips in laptops you never know. Having something that competes with a mobile Intel Quad Core i7 and runs all apps, OSX etc... who knows

I highly doubt you will see a "retina" cinema display any time soon.

...and don't forget the Apple TV set when it hits - hi-res needed there although it will be running iOS... optimized iOS for the Apple TV (iBox??? lol) and also iPad3 no doubt...

We're not going to see a 27" 5120x2880 for quite some time, 2014 at the earliest, so you have no worries. I mean they'll be coming out here within the next year, but the monitors will be in the $2000+ range and Apple won't charge that much for a display again.

Still get one. I just got one back in October and it's the best monitor upgrade that I've ever done.

Also 512GB SSDs are still around $800 for a decent one, so I don't see that happening as a stock option for quite some time. It'll always be BTO option for a couple more years.

I wish apple would just move to SSD's in all models. Even if they didn't reduce the thickness of the MBP

If they moved to a blade style SSD, and got rid of the optical drive, they could expand the battery to a massive size, and put a third cooling fan and more powerful graphics.

That, and the retina display, would earn apple my cash :)

Just now noticing how pixilated the MR logo is? Long overdue for an update.

Last laptop purchase was my PowerBook G4 in 2005. It's over 6 years old, but I'm still holding out for a retina MBP!

Wow. I didn't even notice the new mouse cursors on my Mac when I read this post. I was confused when i was reading this. I was like "new cursors? Oh now I see the difference!" :apple:
