how do you see larger icons in universal access? i do the zoom but it just bigger low-res, not high res.

For those who want retina versions of the Mickey Hand cursor icons which are a bit more true to the originals, I've created some instructions on installing a Mickey Hand Retina that I illustrated a while back, originally for printing our user manuals at high res....but lookin' quite nice as a replacement for the 10.7.3 versions. Personally, I find the angle of the finger the most jarring.

The angle really does drive me crazy.

Now all they need to do is make the rest of OSX's interface resolution independent, which is going to take a lot more work than a mere cursor.

Q2 2012 ? Not a chance if were going one cursor at a time to hi-dpi

Does anyone know where those icons live (on the disk)? I'd love to use them in a screencast. ;)

Other than the glove stripes, it looks much like the standard BeOS pointer.

ok then it looks like I better wait with getting new MBP until what Apple announce about retina ones..anyway I'd like to be running SL on the new MBP...

Last laptop purchase was my PowerBook G4 in 2005. It's over 6 years old, but I'm still holding out for a retina MBP!

Wow! I salute you Sir! :p

Don't know why, but the new higher detail ones look somehow soulless and meaningless compared to the older pixel crafted ones. I don't want to add myself to the row of people whining about everything getting worse and glorifying "good 'ol days". Still I think the new click-hand e.g. looks a bit out-of-style.

I don't want a retina display if I have to sit with a magnifying glass to view the contents on the screen. Apple doesn't even have an option to adjust DPI settings on their OS. Right now my 15" High-Res MBP is enough POE (Pain on eyes).

Well this just killed my plan on getting a 27inch cinema display.

My 2008 23 inch ACD is fine. I feel no need to take a magnifying glass to view my screen - as I did when I was programming a game pixel by pixel in the '90s.

That's not higher DPI, just more anti-aliasing. :-(

That's true.

I highly doubt you will see a "retina" cinema display any time soon.

It won't matter what the display can do as long as media people continue publishing small, lores images.

Couldn't wait any longer.
Replaced my 2005 G4 PB just last week. ;)

Didn't they already do a lot of the icons and wallpapers? This isn't the first time I heard of high dpi images found in OS X.

It's strange that it took Apple so long to implement this. I use Universal Access to enlarge Apple's tiny cursors, and that has made them pixellate in the past. It seems odd they would allow a feature that made their icons look crappy. The improvements are welcome.

Go "Settings / Displays / Display tab (not the Color tab).

I'd image they'll double (quadruple) the DPI, but also double the default font sizes. It just makes it look a bit sharper.

That's on YOU!
People running 1000 threads of garbage in the background causes it... get an SSD and it's GONE! No really... GONE!

even with SSD you get spinning wheel - it depend's on the software u work with..

Found them!

Code:
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/HIServices.framework/Versions/A/Resources/cursors

I don't know. The HiDPI modes already seem pretty usable to me. And while current resolution artwork doesn't look sharp on a 'retina' display, it shouldn't look any worse than it does on the low resolution displays we're used to.

EDIT: Actually...Q2 2012 seems way too early to me, too.

EDIT2: Icon previews are going to really look beautiful (and be even more useful)...:
