That's a step in the right direction. But some new content or should I say some additional content at all for non US customers is also welcome :D

Because DirecTV has exclusive rights through the 2014 regular season.

because of carrier contracts with the cable compnaies.

Licensing deals/contracts have to be done in each jurisdiction separately.

Amen.

All rhetorical questions. Just recapping how these threads usually go. ;)

Yeah but would they have a big enough return on investment? Since the next deal will be well north of the current $1bn per year, don't know that it makes sense for Apple. If the NFL could get the most out of a deal that included multiple providers, not just DirecTV, then I see it being feasible for Apple to bid.

Possibly. Apple doesn't always sell content to make money. For a while, the iTMS was more-or-less break even: it's main purpose was to sell iPods. Apple could sell NFL subscriptions for a lot less than the current price if they wanted to just to move some AppleTVs, or even give a free year's subscription with a new AppleTV.

And it all depends on how negotiations go. With so many potential players, and large changes in viewing habits (mobile/ tablet/ streaming), I expect to see non-exclusive deals this time around. Just my 2 cents, though.

Directv controls NFL Sunday Ticket, not the NFL. They don't allow streaming on any set top boxes this year. Luckily their contract is coming up soon.

The NFL doesn't have the rights to NFL Sunday Ticket. Directv does.

DirecTV might own the "Sunday Ticket" branding (I don't know), but the NFL still owns the rights to the games themselves. The networks & DTV just license the broadcast rights (the NFL retains all rights as evidenced by the disclaimer at the end of every game). Do we really care what the package is called?

Too bad my DirecTV log in wont work on a majority of stuff

I currently use my sister-in-law's UVerse account info to access everything though :)

My hope, more so than a theory, is that when Apple can get Congress to change the tax laws to let them repatriate their foreign earnings without such steep penalty.

They can do this now, this steep penalty is called "paying taxes". They are just dodging them right now. Try keeping your money offshore and not paying tax on it, see what happens if the government find out. You'll pay a higher percentage too I'll bet, and are not sitting on billions.

No, Directv has exclusive access to live streaming Sunday afternoon games. The NFL is not allowed to offer their own package. Not until the contract is up in 2014 (in which case it might get renewed again though).

Apple's got to be close to getting the right combination of content they want. Once that's done, the Apple TV project should take off and be very successful.

How's it working so far? I read a significant number of complaints on Amazon about crashing, bad throughput, poor video quality, etc. We've got a very stout connection (Com Biz Class), and opted not to get Sunday ticket this year, but for this price, it's tempting!

Mines working well! I usually have it up on safari on my iMac and stream to my Apple TV. I also have Comcast's 50Mbps down package. Works well from my iPhone and iPad... works well over LTE too. I was watching the Cowboys on the runway at Dulles as we made our way to the gate this past Sunday ;)

Design

The interface is sort of getting ridiculous. I never really liked their initial change but now with many added apps, it needs another UI design change. At least make the icons smaller and flat like iOS 7 and that would be a great start I think.

NBCSN has the EPL games (not the cup matches though) - that's on my "channels" wishlist, especially if can go individual channel subscription instead of "authorized cable provider".

the nbc app shows a decent amount of BPL games

As others have pointed out, more people (myself included)) would readily purchase a subscription to the individual shows that Apple is displaying on it's Apple TV home screen.

However, from an interview with a cable provider on NPR yesterday, the gentleman pointed out that going to a subscription for individual channels will not likely happen for several reasons. One was that some channels are owned by a parent company and that they sell them in a bundle to the cable providers. Another was that for some of these channels, the cost to un-bundle would be greater than bundling. He did say for some high dollar channels, they are looking to see if those can be sold on an individual basis but nothing firm.

As an analogy, the cable representative said that the channels are like the sections of a newspaper, you can't just buy the sports section, you have to buy the whole paper.

I think this mentality will need to change, and we the consumers are the ones who ultimately have the power, to make a difference and force a change.

It's difficult to predict the future if we don't act, or maybe it is, maybe it will just stay the same. However, if we do something, like stop paying for cable tv, then maybe, just maybe the cable providers might actually listen.

Nah, that would never happen.:(

who buys a paper anymore? /hyperbole
the print newspaper is an outdated model. I can go to Denver Post's website and only read the sports section.... nothing else ;)

NFL already do a "Sunday Ticket" online. It's called "Game Pass", but only for users outside the US/Mexico (https://gamepass.nfl.com). It's about $300 in most places. Funnily enough its free in the Netherlands as they don't have NFL on regular TV there.
Anyway, the point is, they already have all the infrastructure. All they need to do is ditch DirectTV, flip a switch and we'll have it.

So the big question is can they make more money without DirectTV than they can with DirectTV? DirectTV will write a huge check as it is the main selling point of the service to many people.

Users add MLS and Disney jr to list of content hidden using parental controls.

I just use my brother's and sister's user name and password to access HBO go Watch ESPN etc.

I don't think you really need a cable subscription. Your friends and siblings can always make a sub account for you with their cable network.

They need to get a NFL channel. Pay for the week or game or season... Like iTunes. Direct TV contract ends this year... NFL on apple tv so anyone can watch any games no matter what provider you have. :D Would be smart on NFL part. Direct TV only has 20 million customers total. Thats Not nearly enough market penetration for that kind of product. Too many people missing out.

Still waiting for a native Spotify ATV app. I know I can airplay from iPhone / iPad, but there are disadvantages to this method.

The NFL doesn't care about market penetrations when Directv gives them billions. I do hope they lose the exclusivity though and maybe the NFL will take over streaming. If that happens, I think they will push to have it on as many devices as possible.

Taxes on top of money that was already taxed. The United States is the only country in the world that does this to their corporations, which is why these companies don't repatriate the money back to the U.S.

This isn't a "dodge" or an accounting trick. The money was earned offshore and taxed locally when it was earned.

There's a lot of buzz that DirecTV is unwilling to pony up what it would cost them for exclusive rights beyond the current contract. That could be legit or just a bargaining position, but there's at least a chance that other systems (ATV included) will have it for the 2015 season.

We need a mini app store. It easy to ignore but I still don't want half of this junk on my Apple TV. I'd rather have simplicity and only content that's important to me.

Whats the point if you need a cable or satellite subscription?
You can watch these channels in another room without having to pay a monthly fee for an additional box. What I use it for, I can watch at my office using the subscription credentials from my home and not pay the outrageous fees that providers want to charge for business accounts.

Those of us with smaller, regional cable providers are just screwed.

I really hate old media. I hope their business model bankrupts them all.

I need the ability to remove icons I don't (or can't) use. At least give me the option to reorder them.

You can re order them the same way you'd do it on a iPhone. Select, click and hold. Jiggle mode engage! And you can hide them using parental controls.
