I just called and cancelled my digital cable, down to basic 19 channels for me now since I have:

HBOGO
WatchESPN
HULU Plus
NETFLIX
AMAZON PRIME,

No need for cable anymore!

Now just the fact I have to unjailbreak one of my Apple TV 2's makes me sad.
Do not unjailbreak it. Sell it on ebay for over $150 and buy a apple tv 3

still tied to old 1960's cable TV business model sorry HBO and these other cable TV specialty channels have to make direct web access to their content.
You have to make it easier and cheaper to subscribe rather that download a pirated movie/show.
$80 -$100 /mth for a cable subscription to 90% of the content that is useless.
Look at the Netfilx business model for example - cheap - easy to use on any device.

99.9% of the content on Netflix is created and paid for by the 'old media' business models though. New Media business models just haven't matured to the point of providing the revenue capable of producing the content that people want.

Absolutely apropos of nothing to do with Apple -- As I start to watch a movie through HBO GO, I'm reminded of something else that HBO needs to get it's s*** together about and maybe it doesn't come up often enough:

They need to stop showing 2.35:1 movies in cropped 1.85:1 form. It seems like we would all be, or should be, past this "modified to fit your screen" buuuullsh. Present the movie as it was filmed if it's originally wider than my 16:9 television.

So one morning we're going to wake up and Tim Cook is going to say, "OK, 300 channels is enough. There's your Apple Television."

Could be worse.

Generally I agree. But if you've seen Original Star Trek series in 16:9, it's just beautiful. Might be 'the exception that proves the rule' (whatever the f• that means). But it made me question my purist ways. Or maybe I'm not as purist as I thought -- I like Casablanca in colour, too. Not the only way to see it, but a lot of fun. Just wish I could buy it somewhere. WB??

Cue and Cook sell Apple TV out to old media!

I'm dumping my Apple TV over the sellout to old media. Pretty soon you will need a cable sub to use it anyway. :(

I was looking at getting an Apple TV but not sure as the current one has been out a while and we could get something newer soon.

You are kidding? The AppleTV is all but abandoned and has been from day 1. It gets ignored for a couple of years, then you get a flurry of a handfull of services (which, NOTE are country specific and locked to certain providers, still rendering them useless for most of the users).

The AppleTV is grossly neglected and always has been.
But the trend is changing on that. Just stay tuned...it will get better and better with time.

Where is the evidence of this 'trend'? A change in the trend would require more frequent feature releases, which we dont have.

NO HBO GO , WATCH ESPN on Appletv for Directv subs

I have one Appletv and I was going to buy another one , because I thought I could watch HBO & ESPN, but noooooooo , this sucks

...What garbage...

Yeah, imagine how much they'd have to raise your rates to pay for a whole staff to write custom return letters to the thousands of people (rightfully) complaining about the fact that they're not hooked into HBOGo yet.

apple tv in austria isn't nearly as good as in america.

no tv shows
no espn
no nhl
no hbo
no sky
no hulu
no netflix

basically its just is mlb+movies+music...

+ youtube + airplay

Not at all.. That's the point of the Apple TV. (To get away from cable subs in the first place)

Not as long as they continue to rake in the money. The model "changing" needs to actually impact the top players before they take notice.

Netflix producing a couple TV shows does not a changed dynamic make.

Just like AT&T did decades ago...... For instance.... How much does a long distance call cost these days?

Cable is dead they just don't know it yet.

This is good.

All we need now are HBO, to get off their butt, and realise thry will get better business to un-bundle it from cable providers...

This is the only thing stopping me.

HBO blew it in OZ

The Game of thrones is the most downloaded TV show in Australia as quoted in the newspapers. Hell, The American ambassador to OZ even begged us in a speech he made NOT to download it.
Since Im an Aussie living in Jpn - I buy the season thru OZ itunes for $33 which I think is a pretty good deal. They dropped the prices from around $50 to $33 for most of their dramas.

BUT Here is where HBO stuffed up big time - They could have announced the arrival of HBO go in OZ on the Apple TV for X amount of dollars. A package costs $47 dollars on foxtel (according to their web guide) so say $30 a month max.

A lot of people would've subscribed to it as people refuse to get foxtel as it isnt worth the money and they hate Mr Murdock (to many reasons to quote)
