So 4 pages of comments and nearly no one of the posters own a ASD?

Using mine since end of May daily with hours of video conferencing a day. No problems, neither when it is connected to my MBP M1 nor to my Intel iMac.
I am more than pleased so far with the ASD.
lol you don't have to own it to give a opinion on it. plenty of reviewers just gets the product for couple of days and form an opinion thats as legitimate as owners.

You know why there's only two options for 5K? Because monitor manufactures had the bloody sense to not make them. 5K is a gimmick resolution that hardly sells and offers barely any difference from 4K, even Mac users. Unless you actually believe the scaling meme then for most 4K is the way to go, hence why the iMac is 4K and everyone loves that thing.
Apple doesn’t use 4K at 27-inch or higher, that is the big difference. The M1 iMac uses a 4.5K screen at 24 inches, which provides 220 DPI and previously 4K at 21 inches for the 21 inch iMac.

What happenes if Apple decides to stop releasing new Updates for the Monitor? Will it become uncompatible with future Mac releases and therefore useless?
Exactly! Just as they did to Aperture - stopped supporting it by not updating any of the RAW Profiles -Thanks . Aperture only helped me make a living....Meanwhile they kept supporting Final Cut and Logic Pro....
(Thankfully the 27" Thunderbolt Display is still good)

My brother/sister in Steve Jobs, you almost confused me about the name but no my memory was not in error.

I was speaking about this widescreen model.

This was Cinema Display 23” that I bought. The widescreen version was called Cinema Display which replaced the Studio Display in 1999.

Ah OK. Thx. Yes, I forgot some of the plastic ones were also called Cinema Display.

Yes, it had complaints about creaky plastic and interference over the cable.
Indeed, there were many complaints about that series of plastic Apple LCDs, like the 2022 Studio Display. However, the complaints largely disappeared with the aluminum Cinema (HD) Display models a few years later.

I don't own it, no. But my friend does, along with a Mac Studio. He got the same sound problem discussed in this thread.

Also, with an OS that doesn't specifically support this monitor, his head is cut off by the camera. It's kinda lame that you need OS support to get a proper default camera view. Or have they fixed that?

Can't avoid sounding like someone's dad but the rot set in when monitors suddenly were no longer just a CRT or flat panel dumbly displaying an image sent to them over an analog cable from the computer's graphics card, and instead became little computers running firmware.
Well, I’ve got some bad news for you. Unless we’re talking about the mid-80s, CRTs are also little computers running firmware.

I feel it's an unnecessarily over-engineered product. I really was waiting for the next version of the thunderbolt display, slimmer, lighter, brighter, cooler.
It's also overboard on resolution, at 4K it would've appealed to more users I think. Apple seems to be the only company heavily invested on 5K. I would like to get a Studio Display again (I returned one) but it's just too much, not only in cost. If you could get two hypothetical 4K Studio Displays for <$2500....

For anyone complaining about the price.

There were some who complained about the $2500 Cinema Display 20 years ago.

Now you can get that same Cinema Display on eBay for less than $100.

So here is the deal.

When the new firmware comes out I am going to buy this awesome Studio Display.

And in 20 years I will list it on eBay for $100.

And you can then buy it for cheap!!

Generally, there is a problem with this throughout the industry. in my windows PC I have to turn off and on BT several times a day because it loses connection with the headphones.

I forgot also my M1 MacBook Pro does have some audio issues that were happening especially in the Music app. For instance, browsing while listening to music resulted in choppy sound. It was not limited to Music app either, even in Spotify at times. I haven't really checked in on it, since I use my Dell laptop for music and iPad when I'm laying in bed.

it's like they've lost all the experience they had in the Display products.
it was smart not to include the cams and mic in the pro XDR because that would've been pro shame.

Anybody else having issue of fan being really loud? Not running all the time but when it does it’s very noticeable.

Been using mine since launch day, everyday (I work from home) and have had zero problems with the mic, camera or speaker despite heavy videoconferencing use. Works flawlessly between my two Macs. Not saying there is not the occasional issue (clearly folks are seeing some) but by and large this is another overblown issue, lets call it speakergate.

Tim
Have you experienced loud fan noise when fan comes on? Fan doesn’t run all the time but when on it’s at full speed & loud.

That comment doesn’t really stand up to scrutiny. The people who, for whatever reason, have decided not to buy this monitor are unlikely to do so just to prove themselves right or wrong. You don’t have to own something in order to have an opinion of it. Personally I think it’s overpriced and too complicated. Throw in no height adjustment and an essentially non-removable power cord, and it’s a no-buy for me. Your views may be different and that’s fine, but you can’t deny people the right to critique something just because they didn’t buy it.

I definitely experienced these bugs. I thought it was a macOS issue.

The problem for me is the plug is hidden behind a cabinet. I guess I have to buy a HomeKit outlet to automate this until Apple fixes this…

Seriously, why is Apple so buggy with the basics?

Also these playback audio playing at high speed and abruptly increasing in volume is a bug plaguing me with even iPhone and iPad, not just the Studio Display.

This display always felt a rushed product without too much R&D.
Apple needs to simplify the game and just offer a display like the XDR with lower specs. No need to overthink this.

I've owned the ASD since it was released and have had the audio issue twice. The problem absolutely should be fixed, but unplugging the display does address the issue -- in my case for weeks at a time. I have the ASD and Mac Studio plugged into a UPS, so I just shut down, turn off power at the UPS for about 15 seconds and reboot. If you don't use a UPS, you might consider plugging it into a power strip with a switch that's easy to reach (as opposed to unplugging it at the wall outlet). Other than that, I am very pleased with the ASD and look forward to an update that fixes the issue.

Not really. A long term user is going to be able to assess the overall quality of a product better than a person having a new product for a couple of weeks. Same as those automotive awards that are given out when new vehicles are released aren’t the best indicators for the quality of the vehicle once wear and tear start to develop a year later.

I feel nothing about this. Nowadays I tend to be surprised only when things from Apple work properly and perform well.

I completely agree with you. It happened to me once about 3 weeks ago. It took me all of 3 seconds to think of unplugging it to reboot the display. It took me another 5 seconds to unplug, wait and then replug. No problems since. Should it be fixed? Of course. Will it be fixed? I'm quite sure it will.

The downside of a fix is that 140 posters to this thread will no longer be able to complain and moan and groan and be hysterical, which is what so many live for. You folks will just have to wait for the next MR article to continue your misery.

And it goes beyond that... because even if you DO own one and are experiencing the issues being reported, you would be accused of being a drama queen and engaging in hyperbole to draw attention to yourself and told to calm down and chill out because Apple will make it right in the end. ;)
