I’ve had a Thunderbolt display for about 10 years and I don’t ever remember it giving me a single problem. Unfortunately my cats think it is there so they can rub their backs on.
If you are so unhappy with Apple's products, isn't it foolish to buy them?I feel nothing about this. Nowadays I tend to be surprised only when things from Apple work properly and perform well.
This is hybrid display solution product. It's running iOS in order to facilitate all the missing features of a iMac or laptop in a component based pairing with the Mac Studio. It also serves as a reminder that Apple has product gaps to their Display solutions. Such as the older Pro Display XDR has no FaceTime video camera or audio speakers that the Studio Display does when paired with a Mac Pro.I feel it's an unnecessarily over-engineered product. I really was waiting for the next version of the thunderbolt display, slimmer, lighter, brighter, cooler.
It's still true that 5k/220ppi is the "sweet spot" resolution for MacOS, though, and Apple have been left slightly up a gum tree by 5k not catching on in the PC world, which would have brought down the price of 220ppi panels. With no competition (last I looked, the LG was hard to find, and still fsr more expensive than 4k) Apple can charge what they like. It's also overboard on resolution, at 4K it would've appealed to more users I think. Apple seems to be the only company heavily invested on 5K. I would like to get a Studio Display again (I returned one) but it's just too much, not only in cost. If you could get two hypothetical 4K Studio Displays for <$2500....
You guys have raised the toxicity levels to a new high, congrats![]()
So many people were defending this $1500+ purchase. But from the webcam issues to now speaker issues, this is hardy a $1500 experience. Cheaper studio monitors, like those from KRK or Yamaha, for example don’t bug out like this.
To continue to defend this monitor is to defend the indefensible.
That comment doesn’t really stand up to scrutiny. The people who, for whatever reason, have decided not to buy this monitor are unlikely to do so just to prove themselves right or wrong. You don’t have to own something in order to have an opinion of it. Personally I think it’s overpriced and too complicated. Throw in no height adjustment and an essentially non-removable power cord, and it’s a no-buy for me. Your views may be different and that’s fine, but you can’t deny people the right to critique something just because they didn’t buy it.
ofcourse, but a reviewer with couple day spend covers about 90% of what a long time user would say no?Not really. A long term user is going to be able to assess the overall quality of a product better than a person having a new product for a couple of weeks. Same as those automotive awards that are given out when new vehicles are released aren’t the best indicators for the quality of the vehicle once wear and tear start to develop a year later.
And if this thread was about what people think about the display in general, I would agree with you. But this thread is about a specific problem and potential fixes and those interested in that specifically have to read through all the general comments to find people with more than just a general opinion, but actual experience with the specific problem. That's a shame at best and frustrating at worst.
For potential buyers with casual sound use in mind, my experience with the ASD has been fine. I haven't encountered this issue in casual use of the sound. I would buy one again.
It's your money I could care less if you waste all of it. But Apple charges $1599 for a monitor plus the speakers plus the webcam... minus the adjustable stand. You're paying extra for broken features.I don't have to defend it. I didn't buy it to be used as a stereo or a webcam. I bought it to be used as a 5k Monitor and it excels at that. For the occasional times I have used it for video teleconferencing or to play back sounds, I haven't had a problem, but I can not rule out there are problems for people who use such a lot.
I will likely be buying another because the picture quality blows away the competition.
At this obscene price, is perfection too much to hope for?
Now tell me the price it dropped to in it's later years. It was nowhere near that expensive.Guy…it was $2500 for the 23” Cinema Display in 2003 and we never said such things.
Overall the Studio Display is quite fantastic value and quality compared to anything previous and current.
They just needed to test the iOS firmware more thoroughly before shipping.
Good thing these things can be upgraded.
The cinema display started out at $2500 when it was relatively new tech. The studio display takes advantage of the same tech, with an identical fabrication proccess, all that's changed is the led backlighting providing better contrast - thats the cheapest part of a display panel. For anyone complaining about the price.
There were some who complained about the $2500 Cinema Display 20 years ago.
Now you can get that same Cinema Display on eBay for less than $100.
So here is the deal.
When the new firmware comes out I am going to buy this awesome Studio Display.
And in 20 years I will list it on eBay for $100.
And you can then buy it for cheap!!
