I feel it's an unnecessarily over-engineered product. I really was waiting for the next version of the thunderbolt display, slimmer, lighter, brighter, cooler.
This is hybrid display solution product. It's running iOS in order to facilitate all the missing features of a iMac or laptop in a component based pairing with the Mac Studio. It also serves as a reminder that Apple has product gaps to their Display solutions. Such as the older Pro Display XDR has no FaceTime video camera or audio speakers that the Studio Display does when paired with a Mac Pro.

IMHO I don't think we really needed to be able to have FaceTime Centerstage on something that isn't of mobile category, such as a iPhone, iPad. It's nice on a display, but not necessary.

It's also overboard on resolution, at 4K it would've appealed to more users I think. Apple seems to be the only company heavily invested on 5K. I would like to get a Studio Display again (I returned one) but it's just too much, not only in cost. If you could get two hypothetical 4K Studio Displays for <$2500....
It's still true that 5k/220ppi is the "sweet spot" resolution for MacOS, though, and Apple have been left slightly up a gum tree by 5k not catching on in the PC world, which would have brought down the price of 220ppi panels. With no competition (last I looked, the LG was hard to find, and still fsr more expensive than 4k) Apple can charge what they like.

Now, the problems of using a 4k display on a modern Mac have been greatly exaggerated - fractional scaling is highly effective for most purposes and if you hit one of the problem cases you can actually use 2:1 or 1:1 mode for a while without your eyeballs falling out and, you know, change the zoom or font size in your application to fit more content... Not everybody even likes the relatively small UI size on a 5k display. That said, 4k is still a compromise and I can see that Apple wouldn't want to offer a "compromise" display - especially at a price that reflected said compromise...

You guys have raised the toxicity levels to a new high, congrats :)

All I see is rational discourse and the odd default view that anyone in disagreement with anyone else must somehow be raging from behind their keyboard. Perception is an odd thing and is often coloured by one's own bias or weakness of character. It's possible to disagree with people and simultaneously not be their sworn enemy 👍

I actually had this occur to me the other day for the first time - it was very bizarre. Playing music just fine, then went to watch a YT video and sound would play for maybe 3 seconds before puttering out. Switching the app or source would get it working for another few seconds before puttering out again.

So many people were defending this $1500+ purchase. But from the webcam issues to now speaker issues, this is hardy a $1500 experience. Cheaper studio monitors, like those from KRK or Yamaha, for example don’t bug out like this.

To continue to defend this monitor is to defend the indefensible.

I don't have to defend it. I didn't buy it to be used as a stereo or a webcam. I bought it to be used as a 5k Monitor and it excels at that. For the occasional times I have used it for video teleconferencing or to play back sounds, I haven't had a problem, but I can not rule out there are problems for people who use such a lot.

I will likely be buying another because the picture quality blows away the competition.

That comment doesn’t really stand up to scrutiny. The people who, for whatever reason, have decided not to buy this monitor are unlikely to do so just to prove themselves right or wrong. You don’t have to own something in order to have an opinion of it. Personally I think it’s overpriced and too complicated. Throw in no height adjustment and an essentially non-removable power cord, and it’s a no-buy for me. Your views may be different and that’s fine, but you can’t deny people the right to critique something just because they didn’t buy it.

And if this thread was about what people think about the display in general, I would agree with you. But this thread is about a specific problem and potential fixes and those interested in that specifically have to read through all the general comments to find people with more than just a general opinion, but actual experience with the specific problem. That's a shame at best and frustrating at worst.

For potential buyers with casual sound use in mind, my experience with the ASD has been fine. I haven't encountered this issue in casual use of the sound. I would buy one again.

Not really. A long term user is going to be able to assess the overall quality of a product better than a person having a new product for a couple of weeks. Same as those automotive awards that are given out when new vehicles are released aren’t the best indicators for the quality of the vehicle once wear and tear start to develop a year later.
ofcourse, but a reviewer with couple day spend covers about 90% of what a long time user would say no?

A good point well made. On balance maybe I missed the context of the post I was quoting 👍

Been using my ASD for months and I've only had one or two brief audio glitches that I am not even sure were due to the display.

Admittedly I mainly use the display for days when I'm working remotely and mostly just use airpods for meetings.

It's just an unfortunate thing that they built it with an OS. That means they can make it obsolete faster as the processor gets slower with more patching. displayOS coming soon?

It's your money I could care less if you waste all of it. But Apple charges $1599 for a monitor plus the speakers plus the webcam... minus the adjustable stand. You're paying extra for broken features.

How about eliminate the webcam and the broken speakers and knock $200-300 off of the base price, and sell the version with the adjustable stand for $1599 and call it an even trade. I mean with Ventura coming with the Continuity Camera feature... the camera quality from a compatible iPhone from within the last few years will blow away that Studio monitor's camera. A night and day difference.

I've had mine for about 2 months and love it. It's connected to my MBP 14" in clamshell mode at work. Yesterday though I logged into Zoom for a deposition and the microphone on the Studio Display didn't work. I tried quitting then relaunching Zoom several times. Gave up and had to do the deposition from my office PC.

After I was finished, I looked online for a solution to this issue, and before this article was published found several articles about unplugging from the wall, waiting 10 seconds or so, then plugging back in. I did that and resolved the issue. Then I saw this article.

Hope Apple comes up with a fix.

At this obscene price, is perfection too much to hope for?

The hardware is perfect for that price.

Software cannot be bug free.

So the mistake was putting an operating system in it instead of just a firmware.

If that can be called a mistake.

If Apple intends to use updates to improve features in the future than it makes sense to put iOS inside it.

Guy…it was $2500 for the 23” Cinema Display in 2003 and we never said such things.

Overall the Studio Display is quite fantastic value and quality compared to anything previous and current.

They just needed to test the iOS firmware more thoroughly before shipping.

Good thing these things can be upgraded.
Now tell me the price it dropped to in it's later years. It was nowhere near that expensive.

For anyone complaining about the price.

There were some who complained about the $2500 Cinema Display 20 years ago.

Now you can get that same Cinema Display on eBay for less than $100.

So here is the deal.

When the new firmware comes out I am going to buy this awesome Studio Display.

And in 20 years I will list it on eBay for $100.

And you can then buy it for cheap!!

The cinema display started out at $2500 when it was relatively new tech. The studio display takes advantage of the same tech, with an identical fabrication proccess, all that's changed is the led backlighting providing better contrast - thats the cheapest part of a display panel.

The panels themselves are dirt cheap these days, which is why the absolutely identical same panel can be found in a 5K monitor for $900.

That cinema display - it dropped to under $1500 once the panel was cheap enough to build. You're paying for the onboard processing.
