What happenes if Apple decides to stop releasing new Updates for the Monitor? Will it become uncompatible with future Mac releases and therefore useless?
Sheesh, don't worry, Apple will code it into software in a few years to make sure it doesn't work with the latest OS and hardware, simply because they can, thus pushing you to buy a new one, not because of any other reason.

There is also a major problem in terms of 'power management'. The display constantly 'wakes up' when the attached mac is doing something in powernap or any other background task (even activating Siri on my apple watch in another room is enough). Display stays off, but fans start spinning and then don't shut down. Fact that this screen contains a modified version of iOS doesn't seem like a good thing right away honestly. Lots of bugs. The Mac mini with M1 chip has the opposite problem, it never turns on its fans when in sleep mode but does continuous powernap tasks, so it is extremely warm or even hot after a long sleep. Unfortunately, there are numerous hardware problems nowadays. Support is also always lost. Spent hours on the phone and finally it was "keep doing updates, we have no solution".

I had to run a terminal command to de-activate powernap to temporarily solve the problems, because on a M1 mac it cannot be turned off in the settings of MacOS....

Hey guys. This popped up in my emails this morning.

I'm in Australia so I don't know how consumer law in the US works. If the product is not fit for purpose, such as what this monitor seems to be, given that Apple touts its biggest feature being the audio system but it's failing, sure then, you'd be entitled to a refund or replacement?

Or doesn't it work like that in the US (or other countries)?

Incompatible how?

This isn't running some custom display connectivity... so it is not going to become useless because Apple stops releasing updates to it.

When ever has this happened? Original iPods still connect and sync with modern Macs and macOS.

So much trash commentary in this thread.

I think what @Vaccaria is suggesting is more emblematic of the fear and frustration that this 'screen' now has to have software updates to maintain compatibility and, worse, good working order. This has never been true of (any?) display before by any manufacturer (ok there are probably some out there).

This is a frustrating position to be in given that it's a great monitor with great speakers and a very mediocre camera that looks great . . . as long as the OPERATING SYSTEM its running doesn't crap the bed. So far they've acknowledged at least two bugs and it's barely been out a few months. This is concerning and is exactly what people were fearing when we figured out there was basically an iPad inside running iOS.

We're lucky that so far it hasn't been something as catastrophic as something like the display NO LONGER WORKING.

The cinema display started out at $2500 when it was relatively new tech. The studio display takes advantage of the same tech, with an identical fabrication proccess, all that's changed is the led backlighting providing better contrast - thats the cheapest part of a display panel.

The panels themselves are dirt cheap these days, which is why the absolutely identical same panel can be found in a 5K monitor for $900.

That cinema display - it dropped to under $1500 once the panel was cheap enough to build. You're paying for the onboard processing.

You. Are. Not. Saying. Anything.

You. Cannot. Find. A. 5K. Display. Of. This. Quality. And. Features. And. Build. Quality.

For less than $1500 right now.

A simple display was beyond Apple, they had to stuff left over iPhone chips into it and charge an extra grand. Then it fails repeatedly, I call this karma. 🤣

I wonder if the monitor spies on you like the iPhone, iPad, iWatch, and iMac? Are the monitors sending images directly to the NSA without even going through the computer? Instead of having CSAM on the phone is the CSAM on the monitor?

LG Ultrafine 27” 5K monitor can be bought for under a grand. Spend the remaining 500 on speakers and a 4K webcam. Then you don’t have to worry about Apple display updates breaking your monitor, LOL.

Yea…..

5k Studio Display with adjustable height stand and without nano-texture glass is $1,999

LG 5K Display with adjustable height stand and without nano-texture glass is $1,299

They both have the same 5k panel.

The same panel doesn’t necessarily translate to the same performance. Reviews give the Apple display better picture quality as well as 100 nits more brightness, along with faster USB ports. I think the Apple display is over priced, and Apple needs to find out and fix its issues; but some may find it more suited to their needs than the LG.

Any again…

Didn’t mention nano can be had without adjustable stand.

You forgot build quality.

Forget camera and center stage.

Forgot audio.

The cognitive dissonance in this thread is real. People just pick and choose whatever they think makes them sound like winner winner chicken dinner.

Thanks a janky set up but you do you.

When the firmware update comes out I’ll get the Studio Display.

I already tested all these and the Studio Display is the overall best and cleanest.

If I wanted to go higher budget with better panel I would get Eizo CG2700X, but that’s 4K, no sound, chonky plastic design, about $2500 and still not out.

i'd be somewhat interested if it came with ProMotion XDR panels. Have no use for the camera, the A13, and integrated speakers as i would be using 3rd party solutions for that anyway, so to me, that display is pretty expensive for what it actually is

In fact, considering it's current specs, at least to me, an iMac actually would be a more compelling solution, if the current ones could be used as an external display for something else, which, at least from what i gather, is currently not possible?
I don’t know how it would be from a Mac to an iMac (as maybe 5K is also a limitation) but since I started using universal control (it’s actually great, didn’t think I was really going to use that) also noticed that it is possible to use “add display” on the Displays layout settings window to add the MacBook Pro for extending the desktop area.

It works just like sidecar on iPad.

For anyone complaining about the price.

There were some who complained about the $2500 Cinema Display 20 years ago.

Now you can get that same Cinema Display on eBay for less than $100.

So here is the deal.

When the new firmware comes out I am going to buy this awesome Studio Display.

And in 20 years I will list it on eBay for $100.

And you can then buy it for cheap!!

I have 2 Thunderbolt displays and a Studio Display.

The thunderbolt displays have been up and running since 2011 and 2012 (paid $1000 for one and $800 open box for the other). They are as bright and as color accurate as when they were plugged.

Expecting the same for the Studio Display; the previous experience definitely made the purchase quite easier. Plus to me it is a great well-built-looking display, I have a hard time seeing those LG 5K wobbling with death pixels and uncalibrated colors that might die in two or three years and confidently conclude: “THIS is exactly the same, I would rather plug and play the LG than the Studio Display”.

That’s delusional or uninformed. No Thunderbolt Display in 2011-2012 could ever be called color accurate even when they were new. Maybe at best they could do 65% P3 and AdobeRGB. Make professional colorists laugh.

We only started getting color accuracy at consumer to prosumer prices in the last 5 years and even today the results are mixed.

Why are some people acting like a monitor offering firmware/software updates is weird or unique?

I just updated the firmware on my LG 27" 4K monitor. It would have worked with the old firmware forever, but I wanted the new updates. Same thing with the Studio Display. It won't just stop functioning if you don't update it but it is nice to have that ability.

Similar experience here. I've got two Apple Silicon MBPs (one personal, one work). I alternate usage with the Studio Display depending on when I need those machines respectively. Overall, my experience has been great. I have had a few audio issues here and there, but its been pretty solid overall. Even the camera issues - with ample backlighting, its been mostly fine for my needs. I don't think I've had really any issues with it using the 15.5 firmware either.

That said, you can't find a 5K monitor with this quality elsewhere. The display panel is exactly what I wanted. And I had my expectations in line accordingly. The audio is fantastic. Whether music, movie trailers, YT vids, or video conferencing - its crisp, clear and really nice that its fully integrated into macOS.

Spot on!

Tim

That's your opinion which you're entitled to. But it is something a lot of people would disagree with.

If you put a 4K 27" side by side with a 5K 27" and see no difference, glasses may be needed.
Or you know I just don't sit so close to the screen that I'm like "damn this UI is so blurry on my $900 27 inch 4K120hz HDR monitor. I wish it had one extra K."
