I don’t see why other users should have to see this change, the stretch of water between UK and France has like 5 different names depending on what country you’re from. There’s no push for renaming it “English Channel” or “La Manche” for everyone.

I’d be more concerned about the Trump admin giving full access to Elon Musk, an unelected billionaire, and the open defiance of federal court rulings, which essentially means that American democracy has failed. That’s more concerning to me than an idiotic name change…

One is drumming up a drama to hide the other.

Tim should be fired over this…yes…really.
Tim Cook (unfairly) fired Scott Forstall for Apple Maps having inaccuracies and Forstall refusing to apologize, so therefore, if Cook refuses to apologize for Apple Maps having innacuracies, specifically, the innacurate name "Gulf of America," then Cook should be fired.

Apple should just create an option. Each user should be able to choose which names he prefers. The "Gulf of America" name should be a reason enough for a full refund.

Such an option should exist for several places in the world. I do not want to say anything political, but you probably all know some places with controversial names.

Apple is in the process of renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, and changes are already being made to the Apple Maps app. When searching in the Maps app for Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf of Mexico name is shown or the name is blank, but tapping into the area shows the "Gulf of America" wording.

According to Bloomberg, Apple is rolling out the Maps change in the United States today, so the name should shift for most U.S. users in the near future. Apple plans to change the name for all users globally in the future.

Google this week also made good on its promise to adopt the new naming, and "Gulf of America" is now visible in both Google Maps and Waze.

Google and Apple use data from the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) when naming world locations, and GNIS updated its database with the "Gulf of America" name change this week.

Google has explained that Maps users in the United States will see "Gulf of America" instead of "Gulf of Mexico," while users in Mexico will continue to see Gulf of Mexico. In the rest of the world, the name for the body of water between Mexico and Florida will continue to be named Gulf of Mexico, but Gulf of America is shown in parentheses below. Apple might adopt similar changes outside of the United States.

When U.S. President Donald Trump took office on January 20, one of his first orders was changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Other countries do not refer to the area as the Gulf of America and are not required to accept the U.S. name.

Trump also said that Alaskan mountain Denali was being renamed to Mt. McKinley, but Google Maps and Apple Maps have not yet made that change.

Timmy and the others will do whatever Trump instructs them to do. It's not yet the end, but you can see it from here.

I would have gone with Gulf of North America, but Gulf of America is ok. I could see getting upset if it was renamed Gulf of the United States, but it’s not. It’s a gulf in the American continent. 🤷🏻‍♂️
But Gulf of Mexico is the internationally recognized name, and has been since the 17th century. The whims and moods of a political figure doesn't change that fact. It's simply a distraction to keep people's eyes off the ball when it comes to this administration.

Tim is 64 years old now and may resign within those four years.

What else will he be remembered for, other than growing the company and making obscene amounts of money?
Can’t afford a blemish on his record on that homestretch, brought by some silly Trump tariffs or something.
Good lord, he’s on only 64? I thought he was in his 80s. There are corpses in Congress that are 20 years older than him and still look better.

I wish we weren’t so reliant on America tech. Canada just let America take everything. We should take it back. Close Amazon, Costco, Walmart etc. Push them out

What do other countries, particularly Mexico, think about this? This raises concerns about setting a precedent where nations unilaterally rename geographical features, potentially leading to widespread confusion and disputes.

The South China Sea quite infamously has different names in different countries.

Normally users from whatever country will see the map as whatever their home country recognises. Chinese users on google maps see Taiwan as “Taiwan province” for example, Russian users saw the areas of Ukraine they claim are Russian as part of Russia in google maps.

As a non American I’m more confused as to why I’ll be seeing “gulf of America” if they roll out globally when that’s not what my country calls it. It would make this one a complete outlier in regards to “contested” names etc.

I would have expected to read a lot of "Exit USA"!

No? Because people were complaining for EU "dictating" how their phone should work, I would expect the same for USA...

Renaming it Gulf of America is technically accurate as it’s within the North and South Americas regardless of what people say here about it. Now if it was called Gulf of United States of America or even Gulf of Trump, I would have to agree that it would be incorrect.

This would also be similar to India changing Bombay to Mumbai and some other city changes decades after the British colonizers departed.

That is not as uncommon as one would think. Countries, for a variety of reasons, have different names for the same location; and they may not even be language localization.

Bodensee and Lake Constance

Pas de Calais and Straights of Dover

Österreich and Austria (Admittedly, the literal Eastern Empire or Realm would be a bit odd for a name; Austria is a better bastardization of the name)

Personally, I think the renaming is a bit of silly theater designed to appeal to the MAGA crowd.

Renaming it Gulf of America is technically accurate as it’s within the North and South Americas regardless of what people say here about it. Now if it was called Gulf of United States of America or even Gulf of Trump, I would have to agree that it would be incorrect.

If it was really about geographical correctness , Gulf of the Americas would be a better choice as it would encompass all of the Americas, but that would be too woke and smack of DEI for MAGA.
