And you admitted exactly my point. There simply hasn't been enough time for science to do its normal course, which requires years. These "scientific conclusions" that "scientists" are giving now are simply guesses or BS, many of which are wrong, and unfortunately kill people.

Nobody wants to be at CDC and say "we don't know what science says we should do, check back in 3 years", but that's the truth.

As a scientist I understand this. The public, politicians, and media do not.
So in the mean time we use historical data from previous outbreaks and make the logical assumptions that masks do help decrease the chance of spreading the virus and that NYC is not experiencing herd immunity.

A second spike was expected, but the real catalyst, I believe, has been the large gatherings with the protests. This has basically wiped away all the sacrifices people made when staying at home. The timing could not have been worse, but you gotta do what matters most.

As for the skeptics, this virus is still killing the vulnerable. Keep your guard up until February.

The protesters were predominantly wearing masks, which has been shown to greatly reduce the spread of the virus from infected people - even infected people who don’t have symptoms yet.

Imagine being dumb enough to politicize something as necessary as wearing a mask. You have to be a next-level moron to be told that we wear them to protect others around us, and then proudly flaunt that you're refusing to do it. And it's almost always the people who claim to be the most American, and best Christians who engage in this idiocy.

Florida's first spike never ended, but the drastic increase started with the numbers from reopening week 1 and 2, and went drastically higher beginning Memorial Day weekend. All before the protests.
Another person with *facts* instead of relying on the much more interesting *alternative facts*. Fake news.

How many people aren't wearing masks and never will? They have to lockdown to at least try to slow down infections.
Yes they have to be more aggressive because they know people won't listen. The level reached by people breaking the more strict rules is the level they actually want people at. MA was at least smart enough to understand this. They didn't open the parks with beaches because they knew the rest of New England would swarm them and that the state didn't have close to the resources to enforce.

They used the logical assumption that people with low SpO2 need mechanical ventilation which kills them because of the effects COVID has on the lungs. China figured this out quickly, but Western doctors didn't listen, particularly as politicians made a big deal about having car and tech companies build ventilators to show off their country's technological prowness.

You need to be able to jettison those "logical assumptions" quickly. Those logical assumptions include lockdown rates. As has been pointed out, in many areas the lockdowns were far too strict, creating underutilization of healthcare. Now that we're adjusting opening rates, a lot based on hospital utilization, people here are clinging to the old unworkable ideas of zero infection counts.

Please enlighten me on what detrimental effects these two assumptions are going to have and why you felt the need to disagree with them:
  1. Masks help prevent spreading COVID
  2. NYC is not experiencing herd immunity and people should protect themselves from infection

yeah that’s why they sent back an unused medical ship. Lol

Wearing a mask should be a personal choice. According to CDC guidance it is recommended not required.

Business is allowed to require it, it’s their personal choice
Your comments continue to remain irrelevant to the discussion.

You're making a fundamental assumption that if you prevent people from getting COVID now, we can make it go away permanently.

Looking at historical knowledge, we get flu every single year. Even after a vaccine, people still get flu.

Drawing on experience, what you have to do is regulate the rate of people getting COVID to keep it at a manageable level.

What the public and politicians are hoping is we lock down for 3 weeks, the rate goes to zero, end of story. There's only been one disease in the history of mankind that that's worked (smallpox). Everything else has stayed around, and continued killing.

Did COVID deaths stop occurring in significant rates in April like flu deaths did?
The flu continues to kill people worldwide with treatments and a vaccine.

If you’re over 80, something will kill you. If you tested positive for covid, it’s marked as a covid death, but was it really?

No, they are not including everyone who tested positive for COVID and died as COVID-related deaths. Where do people even get this stuff? Is this what they are spouting on conservative news or something?

And lots of people under 80, and under 60, and even under 40, including lots of people with no comorbidities, have been killed by covid-19.

I've changed nothing about my life since this started, so I'm not going to worry now. I'm more worried about getting attacked in the shower by an alligator than I am of this virus.

Not at significant rates. Who gets polio? Who gets measles (other than people who refuse to vaccinate)? Lots of diseases have been essentially eradicated. And if we can get COVID-19 deaths and infections down to, say, the rate of polio, that would be just swell, and well worth a couple more months locked down.

Yeah... and people occasionally die from getting their tonsils out too. That doesn't make it likely.
