to keep up with technology from a specific manufacturer? i keep up with nvidia and ati things too. :)

I like to keep up with technology from specific manufacturers too. But I don't go on forums dedicated to those specific manufacturers and badmouth them, their products, and their customers.

Nor do I, yet it seems here that you must be 100% Apple or you're a X fanboy. I love my Macbook and Mac computers. I love my AEBS. Doesn't mean I don't realise that the Apple TV is a flop or that Apple using Nokia's patented technology requires that they pay licensing fees.

Apple isn't always right, even if they do make some good products.

Completely untrue. And the premise of that poster's comment is that there is a group of commenters here who do nothing but savage Apple, which is completely true. And the unanswered question is - why are they here?

This seems to be a growing trend. Read the comments on Engadget sometime. Nothing but anti-Apple rage and bile. Apparently these people don't like that their status quo (read: their submission to the Microsoft dictatorship) is being threatened.

Apple isn't always right, even if they do make some good products.

I don't see anyone here claiming that they are.

Ok

I'm comfused. After having a bit of a rant (there I said it!) a quick glance over the comments and some background on the more vocal of them. It would appear that some of them (I don't think I need to be specific just look at profiles and web links) don't like Apple. Fair enough everyone to their own, but why post on a forum where you would assume most people love the products Apple make, why else would you log on to a website about rumours for Apple products.

It's part of their jobs. They get paid to do it. I guess it beats their alternatives, which generally include "[w]ould you like fries with that?"

Seeing how his comment was aimed directly at me (since it came after he called me a Nokia fanboy), I think his premise was asking what I was doing here.

It's obvious why. I like Apple products. They aren't all good and perfect, and the company itself isn't always right, but they do make some good stuff I'm interested in.

If you want to refer to the likes of Aidenshaw, then yes, I totally agree. The guy is just wasting his time here.

You honestly believe some people get paid to voice their critique in this forum? :D Seriously, I would bet its just that some are more objective and don't necessarily agree with some Apple policy. Honestly, it is not a requirement to be a teen age pimpled face blind fan boy to use Apple products.

It's a big industry and appple's success is a threat to many players in many different segments. If you think that there aren't people on this and other boards whose job descriptions include "hang out and post crap about apple" then I've got a bridge to sell you. Negative advertising is used for a simple reason--it works.

People generally use apple products because they like apple products. And they like apple products because they work and make the job easier. Why someone would waste a lot of time posting crap about products they use and like makes no sense, unless they are shallow and their lives are empty since they stopped playing dungeons and dragons. Or they get paid.

This entire thread is a waste of time. It really has nothing to do with apple policy or nokia policy, or who's playing fair and who's not. Aapl knows it may owe nokia something, or it would have told nokia to pound sand from day 1. Nokia knows it may be entitled to something, and wants to use this as a fingerhold to get more, and possibly slow apple's momentum and attempt to reverse its own shrinking business. But the bottom line is that both companies are behaving exactly as large corporations are expected to act given the circumstances, that this will be resolved in the appropriate forum, and that this is not a rumor to be discussed on a "did not, did too" message board forum.

Wow.

So, in this McCarthyistic world of yours, where Communists... I mean paid trolls... are everywhere, who is paying you to post?

Or are you just shallow like you claim the rest of the people here are?

What I find more often to be true, is that people who can't come up with a decent discussion counterpoint will instead start calling names and claiming to see evil plots.

Frankly, we have too many people like that around here these days.

I don't waste time posting crap (positive or negative) about products I use and like. And I don't waste time going to boards of products I don't use and don't like, and posting about how much they suck. Why do you do it? And there really can be no "discussion counterpoint" when it's a legal issue which the vast majority of the posters here (yourself included unless you have a legal background, in patents) aren't qualified to discuss.

It's a proven fact that this indeed happens. Does it happen on MacRumors? Who knows. But if it happens elsewhere (and it does), there's plenty of reason for suspicion.

Trivializing this practice doesn't make it go away.

Indeed. The great straw man here at MacRumors is that you can't post any critique of Apple without being ambushed by the mythical (and dreaded) "fanboys" who believe Apple is magical and perfect and worthy only of praise. It's an amusing argument but completely untrue. What I and many others complain about are the commenters who are here exclusively to spew their p*ss and vinegar about the company and their customers.

When someone spends their days (and nights) on an Apple users' forum talking incessantly about how much better Apple alternatives are (dismissing anyone who disagrees with them as koolaid-drinking fanboys), wouldn't the rational thinker question their motives?

Indeed, the rational thinker would.

Just wanted to make sure it got repeated.

unless i am missing something, i didn't see what apply filed for. to me this seems petty. History has shown that apple refuses to play by the rules and i don't see anything currently with the Nokia suit that would counter that. Pay up and move along.

You just infringed my copyright by posting this. You now owe me $10 million. Pay up.

You're missing a lot. Have someone explain it to you.

OK I will fess up on this one. Yes you were among the people that I was thinking of. However you do list your interests as looking at forums. Now from what I have seen you and some others can push all the right buttons to invoke an real humdinger. Yes I know everyone has to stay real but you are on a forum where some people are more of an Apple lover than others. However misguided you and others may think my comments, why make responses you know are going to annoy me and I am sure I am not the only one. My original point was merely Nokia cannot argue they won't licence the technology and assuming the argument is over something like GSM or some other fundamental standard like that what is the problem? I can only assume they are wanting to charge Apple something different to other manufacturers , otherwise there would not be a case for Apple in the first place, same goes for Kodac. Again Apple is not the only company to digital cameras or photo software which I assume the patent dispute is about. Basically why there is not just a flat per unit fee is beyond me, then there would be no argument the more you sell the more you pay. Hence if the product is a flop you don't have to pay much in royalties for a product you cannot sell. Sorry I can become very angry if people push the right buttons (usually marked with an apple key :)). Maybe I misunderstand some posts but some do seem to be a bit hostile to Apple, and I am afraid that is red rag to a bull time for me. Guess that does make me a fanboy but I am not sure I would buy everything Apple make, I don't have the time, money or space. Sure the Apple TV was a flop initiallly but that was due to the lack of content I think as I bought one off a friend but sold it for that reason. I notice the film section has now expanded (typical!) so now maybe it will do better unless the media capabilities of the slate take over from it in which case it will go the way of the G4 cube, small beautifully minimalist but overpriced for what it is and sitting a bit in nomans land. I really hope SJ has something up his sleeve for this little box as it is a good idea but really I think if they are going down this route some of the following may help. Fully functional USB (to add TV tuners and external drives), Safari or at least full Flash and other media support so you can browse You Tube fully and a better way of entering text than the old remote as it can be very tedious going letter by letter. Sorry I wandered off topic just wanted to show I am not a completely blind follower, but maybe a bit short sighted :)
