First they took out the Apple Remote, and then gave it a $9 fee.
Then they took out the matte screens, and placed a $50 fee.

What's next apple, bringing back the express card slot and paying another fee?

Wots the added cost for matte on the mini? :p

Man, people are complainers.

Why don't all the complainers get all this out of their system by going to a Town Hall meeting, yell and scream at their Congressmen about the added fee for matte screens, then return after it is out of your system?

i bought the 13" MBP. I probably would have bought the 15" instead if it had been available with this option--and if there were no meaningful speculation that the 13" would be offered with the option, too. If it comes out with the option, the likelihood is i'd sell my new one and buy a replacement with the non-glare screen.

I never thought I'd see this day. Thank god I waited. +1 to apple ;)

This is so great! Finally, I can look forward to getting a MBP again...I was afraid I'd have to keep upgrading my 1st generation MBP for 5-10 years. I'm already maxed out on RAM, and am going to be buying my third hard drive for this thing.

Matte or just anti-glare?

Does anyone know, is it a quality matte screen or just anti-glare?

Anyone have the 17" anti-glare option to comment?

Wake me when "Apple again offers ExpressCard/34 on 15" MacBook Pro". :(

You might as well be dead. I don't know why Apple kills off current technology simply because of the massive consumer market that doesn't understand expandability in a laptop.

I hope it comes back as well, but I'm not holding my breath for that one, look how long it took us to get FW back in the Macbooks.

This is good that at least people have a choice, but the $50 "upgrade?" Come on!

Well, I personally don't care about it, as I tend to compute in areas with less direct light. It's good that people who desperately want/need it can finally get it though!

Matte Screen

For those who need it great option. $50 fee not so much...

Perhaps somebody can explain why Apple does not offer an option offered by any high-end picture framing shop. All framing shops offer anti-glare glass that has an coating similar to that applied to eyeglasses. When framed, the glass is virtually invisible under any lighting conditions and does not suffer from the loss of sharpness characterized by so called matte glass. Extra-cost goes without saying, but I, for one would gladly pay for this option.

you forgot taking away dvi and making us buy an adapter to install a display.

it also could be an example of people don't express their thoughts on something until it goes missing or is changed outside of their expectations. I doubt you would see thread's dedicated to how much people love their HDMI ports or express cards etc. I am hoping that the next hardware configuration they get it "right" and include HW features that allows for options IE BD, express card, more than two USB ports etc.

surprised to see such an overwhelmingly positive response for us having to pay $50 for something that was free on my 2008 MBP.

Charging people money for something that costs nothing to provide is not good business.

Alas, the matte screen doesn't cost nothing to provide. With the older MBP, the matte and glossy were manufactured on the same lines with different screens put in. Now, the mattes have a different assembly process to accommodate the physical change as well. Because the mainstream option is the glossy, the glossy would obviously be the more mass-market version while the matte would be the alternative with a nominal fee since it's produced on a smaller scale.

It was free because there was no structural difference between the glossy and matte. Right now, the entire line is based on the glass+gloss display. The matte display is structurally different, looks different, and they only carry small numbers in stock.

Is $50 too much? Sure. Should it be free? No, because the change takes effort and extra engineering.

Unbelievable how many people are bitching irrationally...

i think people have resigned to the fact that apple is going to squeeze every little drop out of that turnip, however, i think most are just appreciative to having the option albeit costly one. Maybe that is the direction that apple takes from now on, removing a needed feature and then "bringing it back" and charging you for it. Only apple could pull this off and be seen as positive customer support.

Apple Stores will have it soon!

Ditto on the thank you (and putting my credit card where my mouth is). I called the stores - no plans to carry them locally right now. Likely will remain a BTO option.

I visited the Apple store in South Coast Plaza in Orange County, CA this afternoon. A sales rep there told me they would have the 15" matte screen MacBook Pro in stock and on display in a few days. BUT... only the most expensive model!

I can't wait to see it. I hope it looks as good as the 17".

I bet money that Apple loses money on the Matte option even with the $50. Retooling manufacturing is expensive, and tweaking it mid-product run on your highest-volume item is even more so.

I bet they did it because they'd rather have a 'pro' user buy a laptop with a smaller margin rather than not buy at all.

This.....

and finally, a time to rejoice for whiners will be appeased... hopefully.

A bit arrogant - don't you think? You might think otherwise but it was. Demi-God? Really? With posts like that? I wonder what I have to do to get to your status - as I can be just as rude and remove all empathy for others from my posts, too!

D

The anti-glare screens are different from matte screens. They still have a small amount of glare.
