The $50 fee is Apples little stab back at those who demanded the matte. Apple obviously feel the glossy finish is aesthetically better looking (as do I) but not as functional as the matte. So the compromise is, we'll give them the matte but there gonna pay for it.

This mentions 'Firewire Beta'... is that in all products. This is something I was not aware of. Thank you for bringing it to light =)

As is so often the case in technology, everything has way too many names.

FireWire = i.Link = IEEE1394

FireWire 400 = IEEE1394a = 6 pins = Alpha connector
(except for Sony's stupid i.Link version, which has 4 pins)

FireWire 800 = IEEE1394b = 9 pins = Beta connector

Beta bilingual mode = it's speaking both FW400 and FW800 languages over the FW800 connector

Expresscard and removable battery are much more useful features that need to come back before I'll be in line for a new one.

Again, most said on here fail to realize that the pro and semi pro market use these fir example uad sound processing and allows to buy a $299 express scard that takes a load off the cou while offering reverb and plug uns like fatso, a $1500 plug in version for $300. This is why they are still on 17". I made tha same argument about FireWire. Many said not needed, wrong, Apple saw they were wrong and re-released all pros with FireWire. I also think you can thank msft for pushing apples hand. By tools I am those that weere really clueless about apples business model and the need to gouge higher profits. It's still done by forcing a mac pro when a user really needs just a mid range iMac, i7 headless or iMac with express slots and upgradable gpu.

the irony is that gaming and semi pro audio video is larger than consumers. And their iPhones. Apple needs to wake up. Seriously. The 15 should also have the express slot esata cards, dsp cards, huge deal for pron and semi pro, in fact unless you do a hackntosh, a MacBook pro with express card is the second best option and saying it's not used is false. Even gpu can be offloaded ongood express cards. Again just gaming along far out weighs music consumers.

A hac i7 machine can be made for ~$500 and they are so sophisticated that these days, you can download apple updates with no worries and it's on par with a machine costing 5 times the amount plus you can upgrade CPU and motherboard as well as gpu.

I find myself calling firewire IEEE1394 without knowing it. Sigh :[ Not that it's wrong, it's just overly technical.

No it's not. It's just common sense to call things with names people can understand.

- Want any natrium-chloride to go with your fries?
- What?
- Do you want salt?

Makes life easier ;)

wow

how about cheaper ssd's and ram, not to mention higher resolution on the 15" so I feel like I an getting a better machine than my G4 1.67

Now we see the real reason Apple went with glossy screens. They are cheaper. If they have to charge $50 for the anti-glare surface then you know it costs Apple maybe $25 more per screen.

No, they are not "cheaper" in the sense that you seem to mean (as if glossy was worse than matte screens); it's just that they do NOT receive the additional anti-glare treatment, that's all.

Thank you, Steve, for listening to us

Thank you for the matte screen option. Thank you for listening and giving professional content developers what we need.

I just hope the matte screen 15" MacBook Pro is available through the Apple stores and resellers when Snow Leopard is released.

No, they don't; but they do receive additional glossy treatment instead. All LCD panels are covered with something protective, either matte/glossy treatment or glass surface. There is no such thing as a non-treated LCD panel sold to end-user.

It is Natrium in Europe ;) Comes from german language, I think, due to it being "invented" there. Let's pay homage for that :p

Okay, it's clearly past 2200 because these off-topics feel soooo interesting ;D

It's Sodium in the UK... and last time I checked, we're in Europe

Also, Natrium is Latin

Chill the eff off yourself. There is nothing "anti-Apple" about his response to "BRlawyer", whose rants are so detached from reality that even the hardcore Apple fanboys roll their eyes. Every time Apple farts, he praises them for yet another glorious victory and announces the imminent death of Microsoft. When Apple releases a matte screen option, Microsoft is dead. When they release a minor iPhone OS update, Microsoft dies again. I wonder what the next supposed death blow to Microsoft will be. Probably when Apple corrects some typo on their on their home page. I'm sure that'll crush the company with the 90% market share.

And you continue to take my "MS IS DEAD" comments so seriously...MS as we know it will soon be dead, worry not...but you should take a chill pill instead of presuming that I REALLY mean it every time I use such line in here...it's just my caricatural trademark to remind MS-fanboys that this is a MAC rumors site.

Having said that, you are, as usual, unable to counter the data that show Apple as the highest-rated company in terms of build quality, return rates and satisfaction...therefore, you have little to NO right to whine when they, in all market humility, are sensible enough to appreciate customer feedback and put back a feature excluded in past models.

Wrong again; germans just followed the cradle of civilization and used Natrium, a Latin word.

You're only inviting a trainwreck with that regardless.

Not in Apple's case: the anti-glare IS an add-on to the glossy screen.

You mean Michael Spindler as Apple's CEO?

If it costs them more to produce this option, then so be it. $50 is nothing. I would happily pay for it. There are many of us (often accused around here of "whining") with imperfect eyesight for whom a glossy screen is a serious impediment. If you have great eyesight and the glossy screen works for you... wonderful. But having the option, even at a price, is a welcome change.

I agree but I'm in a horrible mood today so please excuse my abnormal level of crankiness;).

Ahh, Apple. You take away the matte screen saying it was rubbish. Then you give it back to us at a premium. You're not daft where the bottom line is concerned.

Now all they need to do is offer it in the 24" displays and it will save me from buying another brand monitor. They got to do it soon, my Mac Pro is whining :)

Owe, they mist make the cords longer too, or at least replaceable.

Ditto on the thank you (and putting my credit card where my mouth is). I called the stores - no plans to carry them locally right now. Likely will remain a BTO option.

Wake me when they offer a matte S-IPS screen on the Macbook Pro. *yawn*
