The anti-glare screens are different from matte screens. They still have a small amount of glare.

Every screen has a small amount of glare. The "anti-glare" option is identical to the old matte screens. I went to the store and saw them. I suggest you do the same!

went to store as well... i do like the matte a little better, but not worth 50 bucks to me since reflections don't bother me as much as other people. There is glare on the matte as well. It just a washed out glare... like i can see the dark outline of myself on the matte while on the glossy (off or black) I can basically see myself completely. The lights also got in the way of the matte and glossy screens so for both I had to adjust it to minimize glare so I don't understand the argument about not having to adjust matte unless a blob of light washing out the screen doesn't bother you. Under white screen the glossy isn't bad at all (barely see myself) so using something like word/powerpoint/safari/etc not much difference to me. The light also seems to wash out the blacks a bit more on matte (a more grayer black) and I noticed it has a softer look which I think is what glossy fans say is gloomy or dim but the colors are a bit more natural look.. couldn't make it dark or control the lighting at the store so not sure how it is in the dark but I assume glossy will be better in the dark environments as well. Both were at max brightness settings since I do like my screens bright and easier to see details.

I think the main difference is if you have reflections of like trees that move in the wind or people moving around behind you, then the glossy might be distracting. Other than that, for me it was just preference and I was indifferent to both. Both had their strength and weaknesses. I will say that matte was nice and bright... nothing like the matte i had before on my old laptops... its rivals cheap matte LCD monitors like the one I have currently (SOYO Topaz).

The hassle of changing it in addition to the extra fee wasn't worth it to me so I'm going to stay with the glossy screen. I think this option is great for those who wanted a smaller more portable laptop and absolutely hate glossy screens. I'm more indifferent to both. If it was a free option I would choose matte and prefer it, but both screens are really nice and I would be happy with either.

Also... fingerprints are less visible on the matte when on, but more difficult to remove.

does this mean the price of the glossy 15" has actually been reduced $50? How'd they handle the pricing--increase the price $50 and then reduce it $50 if you stick with the glossy? Or stick with the original price and if you opt for glossy you save $50?

The Matte 15 looks a lot better than the glossy version. It sucks they're charging $50 bucks for it though, but they know those who want it or need it will pay it.

...high-end picture framing shop. All framing shops offer anti-glare glass that ...is virtually invisible under any lighting conditions and does not suffer from the loss of sharpness characterized by so called matte glass...

the frame shop i've used--i wouldn't call it high end but i'd call it "middle-end" and knowledgeable--has always offered the anti-glare glass as an option that diminishes sharpness.

No.. it means that matte was selected so the laptop now costs 50 dollars more... to go back to glossy you subtract 50 dollars.

by the way its 45 dollars if you have student discount.

Antiglare to come with stronger hinge?

I wonder if the new anti-glare display will fix the extremely weak hinge on the 15" macbook pros. A mac specialist, who are known for their brilliance, mentioned that it would. I dont see why the 15" is the only one to suffer from this problem when the 17" clearly has the heavier screen and should be the one to contain apple's counter-balance "feature"* Anyone know if there are any reviews of the new screens out yet?

*see terrible design flaw

You have to hand it to Apple, the cheeky bastards. They take the choice away from their customer, then they bring it back but at a substantial fee… and people are actually grateful!
If it costs them more to produce this option, then so be it. $50 is nothing. I would happily pay for it. There are many of us (often accused around here of "whining") with imperfect eyesight for whom a glossy screen is a serious impediment. If you have great eyesight and the glossy screen works for you... wonderful. But having the option, even at a price, is a welcome change.

It didn't cost them so much "more" previously when that was their standard. I have a hard time believing they have any justifiable reason for that fee, other than they know a bunch of suckers will pay it. A herd of sheep followers who somehow think having an apple computer is a way of life and believe their dorky lives become somehow cooler. It would be funny if I didn't find it all so pitiful - all the unconditional praise for Apple, no matter what they do.

It is a welcome change but I think they're taking the piss charging (and not an unsubstantial amount) for it and I am content to say so.

I used to be happy to buy Apple products but lately I feel much less pleased about putting money into the wallets of a company that keeps pulling this kind of bullshyte... and it is bullshyte.

Alas, I do prefer the matte and if I so choose, I'll walk into Apple backwards with my pants down to get it. *le sigh*

Wow Apple! Way to hurt a loyal customer. Just two weeks ago I decided to go for a new MBP. I always enjoyed the older glossy screens, so I didn't think much about the new glass screens. Boy was I wrong! These are more reflective than my older glossy MBP. I had no choice but to get the 15 MBP as the it was the largest laptop I could get that met my budget. And there is no way I was going to buy a PC and switch all my software to Windows or find and buy alternatives.

Now, the new one was purchased at BestBuy and I'm at day 16. Is there anything I can do? I'm going to call the BestBuy Apple representative and see what I can do. I'm sure they're going to say "No!", but I need to try. I'm getting a lot of headaches lately and I'm thinking the reflective screen is the reason. The older glossy never gave me headaches like this.

P. S.
I don't have a problem with shelling an extra $50. I just hate it when they remove an option and later add it back whenever they feel like it. They could have saved me from a bunch of headaches, literally.

....After the last release I was glad, for the first time, to have grabbed a first gen product. An SD Card reader? Seriously? Yes, because nothing says "Pro" like a convenience item for photographers that would have cost $5 to get as a USB add on.

Seriously
1) an SD card reader? All dslrs use CF, with SD as a secondary in some models. SD will not overtake CF.
2) why make glossy, the non-pro screen, STANDARD on a pro machine? The standard should be matte. And if glossy was so great that everyone would want it, they should charge 50 dollars for glossy rather matte to make their money.
3) I doubt it "costs more" to add a matte screen. Its literally just a different top assembly. Its not like an option on the motherboard or anything. You have an extra assembly line for the matte displays, and matte displays just get plugged in as the BTOs are made. If anything it should be cheaper, since there is no glass.

I currently am on no speaking terms with apple. I need a laptop but refuse to buy a new one (got used) until they stop selling to the wrong crowd. They also need blu ray.

AFAIK
MBP=matte, CF card reader, blu ray, higher res screen
Powerbook=glossy/matte, SD card reader, superdrive

A bit arrogant - don't you think? You might think otherwise but it was. Demi-God? Really? With posts like that? I wonder what I have to do to get to your status - as I can be just as rude and remove all empathy for others from my posts, too!

D

If you wish to attain Demi-God* status, it is very easy. You just have to pay the $25. ;)

LOL some of you take things way too serious, not on speaking terms with Apple, and let me guess Apple is your personal friend?

I am having the same problem with the glossy screen. I am having a hard time reading the display. I do have AppleCare, so can it be replaced by paying an additional charge, or would Apple replace the notebook cause I wanted matte.

I have the late 08 model, so I think I have a good resale value since I have the CF and the removal battery features that the new 09 pro's dont have. Maybe I should try and sell it to get the matte.

Unsure at this point.

frankly, i loved my glossy screen... but finally apple puts it back for those glare-annoyed people out there.

Yeah some people can't get past the word "Pro". Macbook Pro means its obviously only for serious uber professionals, after all, it has those magical 3 letters

Good Luck with resale value. Go look on ebay you will see. Apples laptops dont hold value anymore... ha ha
