Considering competitors have watches that last multiple days, this is disappointing.

"aiming for 2.5 to 4 hours of active application use with 19 hours of active/passive use"

Yeah.. uhm... no thank you.

Of course people will buy it, it's cool and nice looking jewelery too, since it's Apple. And you can always pretend knowing the time, even if it doesn't have any battery left. ;)

i can't imagine spending more than 4 full hours a day using this tiny device in conjunction with my phone. And even having to charge it once a day isn't the end of the world. It'll take less than an hour to charge. I'll probably just charge it during a meal and be all set, even able to wear it overnight so I can have it wake me up. Really, I think people are being a little dramatic and overestimating how much screen-time they're really going to spend on this thing.

Right? First the complaint was that nobody wears watches, and now everyone's bragging about the superiority of their analog watch.

I know some people are just being smart you know whats. But I find it amusing that supposedly no one wears watches anymore yet Watch is doomed because it doesn't have an always on display showing you the time 24/7.

Man, this product is going to be so bad that it's going to sell a shipload and the become the gold standard by which all wearables are judged. My girlfriend and I are sure as hell getting them on day 1.

Remember how when the Galaxy Gear was announced, and everyone thought a one-day battery life was terrible? And now suddenly everyone is okay with it on the Apple Watch

Haha, so funny how that works isn't? Talk about Apple apologist at their best defending Apple's mediocrity vs their competitors.

Standing in line for the new one
Not the black, but the blue one
And I don't even know what it do son
but Apple said that it's too fun
They say it has all new features
Faster processors and much better speakers
Great for kids, a necessity for teachers
For work or home, a revolutionary way of being alone
I mean, should we really get a loan?
Hey what's the address to... tell it to your phone
Cupertino heart with Chinese parts
Built by the poor, but designed by the smart

It does quite a bit, over 3/4 of what the Apple Watch does, I would say.

I'm sorry, but the Pebble is crap compared to the Apple Watch, and nobody is going to care about it except some niche enthusiasts. Meanwhile the Apple Watch is going to sell like gangbusters... over 30m in the first year, and become huge with the population in general.

The Apple Watch has a high res display, Siri, digital touch communications, a microphone for calls, taptic feedback, a digital crown for fine-tuned control, nifty app launcher, force touch, short/long looks, super easy interchangeable band system with killer bands (huge plus), a classy design that competes with traditional watches, sophisticated fitness/health software, ApplePay, what will become a huge app ecosystem, storage for music playback independent of a phone, a walkie-talkie function, beautiful custom 3d graphics and sounds, a beautiful backside, sapphire glass, Apple TV control, and remote picture taking.

How much of that does Pebble have? Even the things they both do (not listed above) the Apple watch will do with more sophistication and a better overall experience.

I'm concerned that Apple may go on to redefine the day as 19hrs and sell it as an improvement. I adapted to "natural scrolling" but Thunderbolt was an expensive shift for me and replacing all my 30pin with lightning was challenging. But I really don't think I can compress all I do in the current 24hrs into 19 :D

Normal usage

My Android Wear device will have anywhere from 20-60% of its battery remaining when I plug it into the charger at the end of the day, after 15 hours of normal usage. The Apple Watch battery life quoted is similar. This should not be surprising since it will have similar display technology and size, similar (not identical, but similar) CPU, RAM and flash capacity, and will be interacting with the host device in a similar way. There is a limit to what can be done with the limitations of the form factor, need for connectivity and a readable display, etc. The daily recharge is not a bad thing, and it will charge to capacity in under an hour. I've never had to charge my Android Wear watch in the middle of the day, and I use it pretty extensively. Once it died on me but that was about a 19 hour day where I was using it heavily. I'm assuming the Apple Watch will perform at least as well.

19 hours seems Ok but nothing more. Overall, I am excited to see where this product goes (better battery life, GPS, SIM card, overall less tethering to iPhone), but the first gen seems like it will have significant drawbacks.

He says, having never actually seen an Apple Watch.

In other news, unicorns taste like chicken.

Funny, I was under the impression that the Apple watch hadn't been released yet. You should give us a full rundown since you seem to have access to one.

Of course I'm basing it off what Apple themselves have purported the Apple Watch to do, smartasses. I readily admit that there may be a list of features that they have yet to announce.

Someone use your considerable photoshop skills to transform these misleading pictures of watches into their actual appearance for 22 hours a day - a totally black screen. Enough of this false advertising.

"giving it time to eek out as much battery life as possible."

That should be "eke out". They're not screaming at the thing. I hope.

Apple quotes real battery life times, not fantasy ones like it's competitors.

LOL since when?

Show me a screenshot of a 5s, 6, or 6+ with ANY of these battery figures and I'll believe the 19 hours:

19H x :apple: = 8H of real-world use I bet.

What about a thinner charger block - maybe sticky back and position accurately - wear whilst on and connected to a battery pack in your pocket? Think kid with gloves on a string for the cable

Also what about charging in the evening (bath time) and wearing at night to track sleep, and top up whilst showering in the morning? That way get all day and all night use?
