They don't really create the buzz or have to create it. The media starts it and it spreads like wildfire.

One of my criticisms of Apple is the way they play their cards so close to the vest. Creating some buzz now and then wouldn't be such a bad idea. If they are doing it here, it would be something new and very different. Personally it seems to me this is just the media wildly extrapolating off of very thin information. So what else is new?

I'm already excited for the mockups of what a Jony-car looks like. And hearing him talk about how much thought they put in...to the treads...of the tires....really...thinking...agonizing...over what a tire should...what it could....feel like to the road.

Gold Jerry, gold!

I don't know if Apple does, but "sources familiar with the matter" certainly do. ;)

They rarely respond to something they're not planning on revealing soon. And the confirmation is pretty terse too. You're not going to get details.

If a further leak about the watch happened right now. You'd possibly get a back door confirmation. But, a car rumor... I don't think so.

"So what we've done here is gone from reinventing the mobile phone... to reinventing mobile. This has been the hardest project I've ever worked on. It makes our Apple Watch look like - well.... a watch."

Well I'd love to know who is pushing these rumors and why.

The rumors come from the fact that its pretty hard to keep a 1000 person R&D push that costs probably more than $100M under wrap. Hiring alone will tell a lot. They'd need some covertness on the level of the Manhattan project to keep this secret :).

Reactions from the competition, GM, Musk, also means something is happening. This industry's "small" enough (at least when looking at top talents) and the level of people Apple is seeking specific enough that I'd think keeping it from the competition would be very hard.

We also had wind of Apple poaching people at Tesla AND a123, both related to the automobile industry and batteries.

The Wall Street Journal reported it, Reuters reported it, Financial Times reported and now Bloomberg. I mean, at this point, who else you need to report it? Tim Cook himself? It's happening.

Wall Street journal said there was going to be a verizon iPhone in 2007 8 9 and 10. It's quite obvious half the time they make crap up just for page clicks. And when one makes a story up the other copies and pastes it. We see it here on macrumors. Half the post here are copies including spelling errors from the original. It's a little sad that you think it is gana happen just cause they said it was.

I really hope not...

Why would you really hope not? Why does it matter?

This is the logical option. Apple has too many competitors for its own good. Don't get me wrong, I want to buy all-:apple: everything too, but I have always had a natural affinity for Tesla and would not like the hypothetical choice I would have to make.

Well thank heavens you're not the head of Apple. Quite a few people had your exact stifled way of thinking when it was rumored that Apple would be getting into the cell phone business....and when Steve Jobs said he would get people into buying music again when illegal torrenting and file sharing was the norm. Nuff said. :p

UGGGGG. I am NOT looking forward to 5 years of rumors with no product announcement. I'm already getting tired of them.

Excellent! Stay off the internet and ignore the media and you got your wish.

If it's true, I'm sure they're taking advantage of all of Tesla's old patents.

....but I just can't believe this. After all the talk of "focus" and that's it's important to choose what not to spend time on. WTF? Don't get me wrong, I would love to see what Apple can come up with, but WTF?

Such a good sketch. Can't believe I forgot about key and peele

As Hulu says: you know you want to watch more TV.

They must be before my time. I watched that video for the first time only a few years ago and I got a kick out of it.

Why would you really hope not? Why does it matter?

Yeah, I would probably have competency issues if I was CEO :p

Don't worry. By the time this car would be getting into the launch window, this crowd would have fully turned on Tesla, bashing them and their products like they are the new Samsung. And, a few years later, "we" will remember Apple as inventing the electric car and ripping into Tesla and others as copycats for every little innovation.

If Tesla sues Apple for some patent infringement, we'll rail against the antiquated, outdated, begging-for-reform patent system. But if Apple sues Tesla for some patent infringement, we'll tout the wonderful patent system protecting intellectual capital along with "Die Tesla Die" and similar.

This rumor has just been born. It will take a while for "us" to believe it's really going to happen. But as "we" do, we'll begin to pile up the faults with every other electric car while piling up the rationalization for why the Apple version will be the one and only car anyone could ever need. ;)

All that said though: personally, this is something about which to be excited IMO. If it's true, I'd love to see what Apple could do in terms of building an iCar. And an iCar seems like it has much more "next big thing" punch this this Apple Watch (again IMO). I don't foresee the watch being an iPod, iPhone, iPad-level home run much beyond the Apple faithful and some fashionistas. But I could see an iCar being a monster... a great new channel on which to focus some of the big brains at Apple. Obviously, I hope this rumor is true.

The media is great at it, that's for sure. Look at ESPN and all false stories they post from "leaked" sources.,

Last June the WSJ said Watch would ship in 2014 with 10 health and fitness sensors.
