Apple seems a bit desperate.....people already have established subscriptions and those companies shouldn't be willing to give Apple a piece of their pie. No need for Apple to try to take a cut from those well-known and used video subscription services; they really are money hungry.....just greedy Apple as usual. Time to pay others Apple when they started and provided these services first.

Next lets see if they start a subscription book service like Kindle...this is becoming outrageous....yesterday or the day before was magazines/news now this............

Why is Apple so behind in subscription services, innovations etc.?????

Their chief moneymakers are slowly going downhill and they are playing catch up.

Exactly my thoughts.
As a customer: how would I benefit in getting everything from Apple instead of directly through the apps itself and route it to the TV app?

The main reason I'm looking forward to it, is Apple's iTunes encodes are almost always significantly better than other services like HBO Go, Netflix, Hulu, etc, and look noticeably sharper as a result.

Between this and their Apple News plan, Apple's services growth plan looks at best uninspired and at worst an unrealistic attempt to rely on other people's brands to subsidize its own crappy service.

This plan makes no sense, as another poster already pointed out you can get already all of these channels and more on your iPhone/Mac/Apple TV. If they were smart, they would have structured this like Apple Music, and avoid trying to lure the cord-cutter/a la carte set back to a skimpy and unsatisfying cable-tv like package.

I guess Apple has less faith in the strength of their original tv programming to stand out on its own than even their skeptics. Not a great way to jump out of the gate.

This announcement seems kind of boring if this is all there is. Announcing something like DirecTV Now where you can get a bunch of actual channels w/ a guide & DVR, etc.. w/o the bugs of DTN would make for a good announcement. Just allowing access to the same stuff they already have through the TV app is not really news.

If you were to pay for just a few shows a la carte then you'd be at the price of a Netflix subscription for a month. If you're the kind of person who only watches a couple shows a month, you probably shouldn't be paying for a subscription. For everybody else who watches much, much more than that, the prices these companies are asking is more than reasonable in my opinion. You can even mooch off a family member half the time with how generous they are about multiple people using the same account.

We've seen the writing on the wall for this for a couple years.

The question is what content is Apple going to have ready to go on launch? If it's Apple's own content only, than there might be an issue of just not enough content to warrant a subscription.

Netflix, Hulu, Prime, don't do well because they only have exclusive content. they do well because they have exclusive content and millions of other of hours of programming to watch. full seasons of our favourite shows. Full movies. Etc.

What will Apple's service look like? how much will it cost? And how much ancilliary content will they offer.

unlike when iTunes started to provide TV and Movies to download, there are already streaming services well established today. Those streaming services have a lot of contracts for content. Will Apple be able to get involved this late and have enough content outside of their own.

Mooching someone else's account is coming to an end quick. Look up the UK company Synamedia. They've created an AI-based tool (seen just last month at CES) that all the streaming services are gonna adopt.

Why should they pay Netflix?
For allowing Netflix app to run on Apple devices? Without Netflix, many people might consider dropping Apple ecosystem. Seriously though, Apple wants their service (with 30% fee) to compete with the myriad of devices (like TV sets, DVD players etc.) that "offer" Netflix for free. No wonder Netflix prefers the latter.

Neither HBO nor Showtime will stream Aople’s Library of original content.
But the current TV app already shows all of that content in one place. So I still don’t get it. Unless the point is that it’s a service anyone could sing up,for without an AppleTV.

It's probably something like Apple News subscription that they are preparing where you pay $10 per month and get HBO, Netflix, Hulu etc. Oh, and Apple gets 50% of the revenue. I wonder why Netflix and co. are not interested.

Positively absolutely hate subscriptions. It seems in the near future you'll have to have multiple subscriptions to get what you want, not unlike cable which makes you pay for big packages to get the one thing you want.

Paying $10 here and $20 there and everywhere else monthly for the rest of their lives will be the norm for the Gen Y and Z. It already is the norm but at least there are still options for now.

It's not officially tracked, but multiple independent studies have shown that the Top 10 most watched shows/movies on Netflix are reruns. Recode did a study of 100m anonymized devices. A Netflix original doesnt appear until #13 (OITNB), and it is one of their longest running. The fact Netflix had to cough up 3x the previous rate just to keep Friends for one more year--and quickly paid it without a peep--shows that Netflix knows what the real lure is.

I would Apple if I can get bundled and discounted: HBO, Netflix, Prime
Why would those 3 content providers take less money just to help Apple? They don't need Apple's help getting subscribers (well, Netflix maybe soon...)

What is the point of getting Showtime through Apple’s app over downloading the Showtime app?

Yes, it will be. Among other things.

I think we'll see Apple announce a complete entertainment solution with the News subscription event.

Apple will take the opportunity to preview it's new shows, and streaming service, tout the deals they've made to include the app on major TV manufacturers, and if I'm right, announce the halo products Apple will offer which provide free access to tApple's streaming service -- possibly including a low cost streaming stick as rumored, the Apple TV, and that's why I expect to see a new iPad mini, and iPod Touch announced -- devices which keep the spotlight focused on Apple's services, but provide an entry level device that will give customers free access to the service, and encourage adoption of other Apple services and products.

What TV sets and DVD players offer free Netflix?

I am hoping Apple can come up with a master subscription service that encompasses music, video, iCloud, storage, etc.
Make it at a reasonable price for individual and families and I can consider it.
Right now, I try to avoid subscriptions as much as I possibly can.

The first part of this statement makes no sense. Netflix availability has no impact on my purchase of an Apple device, nor have I heard anyone say... ya but does it play Netflix? Netflix is available on nearly every device, and the majority of devices are way cheaper than competing Apple devices. The only reason I’ve bought Apple TVs is because they are the only devices that I was able to use to view my purchased iTunes content on my TV.
