Was really looking forward to a 27" iMac with Apple Silicon. The standalone Mac Studio is ok, but the 60Hz Studio Display with no ProMotion and an extra few hundred bucks just to raise and lower it is way overpriced IMO. My current desktop is a 2010 iMac that is just recently starting to show its age (not to mention High Sierra being the last supported OS).

The problem with the 27" iMac is that apple seems hell-bent on adding as many features to their new displays like XDR in this case, instead of keeping the price low by shipping "just a 27" 5K"

I know it's more complicated than that. But cheaper displays should be an option for apple. Leave the fancy display stuff for your standalone dsiplays.
The impression I get from the Studio Display is that it is expensive because it's solidly built to last. This is a product you will likely use for ten years or more. I compared it to the 5K LG UltraFine that it competes with and that display is clunky, wobbly, and doesn't feel at all like a premium product.

Only time will tell if the Studio Display lives up to this; I know I'm going to feel cheated if I don't get at least ten years out of it. But that's my feeling as to why it's so expensive. They also used a full SOC in it to drive it so it will be upgradeable with new features for years to come.

no doubt in my mind that Apple has prototypes even more beyond those mentioned in the article ... and just because we havn't seen those yet announced doesn't mean they still might be coming ...

I honestly would pick iMac over Mac Studio any day. I like the set-up for Mac Studio. However, iMac offers convenience, affordability and it is an all-in-one machine.
From a computer design perspective I seen far more all-in-one desktops in TV series than anything else. They might not be exclusive to Apple, but people generally prefer the designs compared to generic tower designs. I continue to see Apple iMacs in film and TV series and wonder why Apple would not pursue its attractive design compared to the older component style of computing. Yes the Mac Studio reminds me more of classic Apple Macs, which are not particularly attractive, more purely functional.

Not really sure what Apple is waiting for in regards to the 27".

One can hope that it signals a move away from the AIO form factor for non-entry level machines. AIOs are environmental nightmares as the useful life of the monitor is far greater than the cpu but there is no (good) way to use them (iMacs) as an external monitor. Would be really nice if Apple developed a way to do this for old iMacs.
That's not an environmental nightmare. It's just an annoyance to the customer.

YMMV but I view AIOs as a nightmare, there is no reason for this form factor besides "having a clean desk". Repairs/upgrades are more difficult, if even possible, thermals are more of a challenge and again, when your CPU is no longer viable you at best recycle your machine, at worst it ends up in a landfill. A perfectly functional screen wasted.

I would change my mind if something like the Studio Display had an SoC slot and when one got old you could swap it for a new one. Apple would never do this but if Microsoft embraces ARM I could see the PC manufacturers going for something like this.

24" and 27" seem awfully close to each other. I would hope they use the slimmer bezels to bump the larger iMac screen size rather than shrink the case, if it makes a return.

The iMac has always met my high-end needs, but nowadays it's so underpowered... it's a low-end Mac period.

I know they make a ton more money with the Mac Studio, but this is a real shame honestly.

How you gonna feel when your source is outed, fired and sued in court?
This **** doesn’t hurt Apple one bit. It’s interesting. I don’t know why Apple would get bent outta shape about such things. They should just go back to counting their money.

It was believed that the 27" would have been 29.5" (call it a 30" as the 24" is actually 23.5") if they had greatly reduced the bezel and gone with a 2021 MBP display like design. Size wise it would be almost the same size as the recent 27" iMacs.

You know for pros, a computer with a built in monitor doesn’t really make any sense. Why is this even a thing? Buy a really good computer and a really good monitor. And then when that computer becomes obsolete, buy another really good computer and use the same monitor. Thats just the way things should work. It seems like Apple has fried the brains of people around here. I bet people are so brainwashed now they will be upset if their computers are in any way upgradable too.

That was the iMac I was waiting for, but ultimately bought a Studio + SD. If this is released, I'll feel like a sucker, but I am enjoying the Studio now.

I'm enjoying my Mac Studio and Studio Display as well. It's a sweet combination. Especially like all the ports. Most of which are occupied now.

The problem is that both computers and displays becomes out of style technology wise in a similar time frame. Displays can becomes less desirable just as a computer these days. Even the thought of a buying a new faster computer with an old display makes me cringe. :D

My 2017 Intel iImac still runs fine.
Now I have a reason to hold off on a purchase in hopes that ultimately an M series 27" iMac is released.
