I would be really surprised though if Philips didn't find a way for Hue to work with HomeKit. That would be a bummer.

outside of replacing the current hub, what benefit would it provide being a part of home kit?

Oh? Anything cool you're able to tell us about it yet?

Is there an actual Siri API so that you can do TTS and/or STT? or is Apple still keeping Siri all to themselves?

I've been slapped on the wrist by Apple before for posting in forums about early access stuff so I won't say too much but on first glance, no.

I've been focusing on game porting. I have some OS X games sitting in my development folder that I never finished as I lost motivation, I'm hoping that the new ATV will re-ignite my passion to finish them.

So far I've got them working in simulator but it's really hard to get a feel for them without the actual remote.

When I looked at the terms I believe it required an Enterprise Developer account ($299, not the $99 one) so that would knock a few less serious folks out. Plus the prioritized based on developers with Apps already published in the store...

That wouldn't make sense, because Enterprise accounts cannot publish to the App Store.

By definition, to have published an app on the App Store, you must have a regular ($99) account.

I'm not a developer so this may be a stupid question: Do the apps have to be focused on television content and games? Are you able to develop apps for any application, like home automation? I was really surprised they didn't have any integration of Siri and Homekit shown at the keynote. That seems like a killer feature for the new AppleTV.

If they didn't announce that you can talk to other devices, I'd assume not, Apple is generally VERY slow in opening up communications to other devices.

Just looking at the supported Frameworks, CoreBluetooth is one of them so you could presumably talk to with a LE radio, albeit at slow data rates.

Have any non-US developers received emails? I haven't received anything yet, and I wonder if they're still sending emails or whether that means I missed out :(

I have one incoming. I've had an app that supports AppleTV (via AirPlay) for a while now. Looking forward to making it into a native AppleTV App. Wooohoo!

Good question. There's a TVHIG (Apple TV Human Interface Guideliness) document, which I haven't read (yet).

But I hope the answer is No. I received my lottery invite (woohoo!) and am planning apps that aren't TV- or video-related.

That would be a real bummer if they're not allowed.

If rumors are to be believed…

Apple was supposed to announce the new Apple TV at WWDC and pulled it last minute. I'm guessing they were going to hand out the Apple TVs to every attendee (they did this before with things like the first iSight camera). So, I'm thinking these units are the ones intended for the WWDC handout (hence only the $1 price tag, they are paid for already). Find out how many WWDC attendees there were and that will be the number of units they had on hand.

It's a smart way to turn a semi-bad situation into something good, if you ask me.

What a shame.... I would have preferred the cash..

But at least u get something...

If this is a trend every WWDC, then i like it.

Got my invite. Now I've got to figure out which of my apps would benefit most from being ported to tvOS, and then start reading a whole bunch of new developer documentation. Winning this lottery turns out to be work. Lots.

Just got my rejection letter from Apple.

Dear Developer,

Thank you for registering to get an Apple TV Developer Kit. While you were not selected for this opportunity, we share your excitement for tvOS and encourage you to start building innovative apps for Apple TV with the tvOS SDK.

We appreciate your support.

Best regards,
Apple Developer Relations

It's ironic. Some of my dev coworkers who have no intention whatsoever of creating an Apple TV app all got accepted. AFAICT they just wanted Apple TVs for $1 (and who can blame them).

I, on the other hand, am actively working right now on an Apple TV app. I was rejected, even though I've helped ship major apps for several fortune 100 companies. Bummer.

For owners of the current Apple TV who anticipate upgrading, ready yourself for the new hardware by propping your device up on a few coins and talking to your remote.
Hmmm. I tried that. It looked like the Apple TV propped up with a few coins. I talked into the remote. Nothing happened. I'm curious. What was the purpose of your post?

No go.
