Lol..

We know this,,, but what gets me is Apple switched off selling the iPad 3 overnight.... A least the iPad 2 stuck around fir a few months selling at a reduced price.

Apple's way of saying, "We KNOW iPad 3 was great, but hopefully we will force people for a "less resolution experience" iPad mini, if we remove it completely." And only sell it through the Refurb.

This gets my goat !!

Oh well,, i better get AppleCare then for my iPad 3.

They are available if you want one through refurd. So how are they not selling them?

Lucky the USA managed to order whites at all. There NONE for the rest of the world.

Where did you get this from?

Can easily get a white one in Australia at least. Not sure about other countries though.

Maybe it's a generational thing (although I'm 66). But I like seeing my hardware look like it's been used as heavily as I pushed it, taken to as many places as I've taken it, and not been treated like some delicate thing that has to be left at home in a drawer.. A lot of people get special satisfaction from a pair of jeans that shows the rigors they've traveled through or a flannel shirt that's been with them for decades. I don't get this keep-it-pristine approach to our technological products.

That idea gets thrown out the window when in order for people to keep up with Apple's new products they sell their old ones. The resale value of Apple products is probably the best in the market due to demand. User that keep their device in excellent condition get top dollar.

and then there's OCD

This is why Apple does not lower prices. People will buy it reguardless of the price because it is an Apple product. I'd be interetsed to know what the sales numbers would be if the iPad Mini price was in the same range as other smaller tablets...

Apple could have priced these the same as the iPad 4 line and they still would sell the same as it is selling now.

Well I can't say much about Christmas... but last Hanukkah my parents surprised me with a BMW 328i and I never even really pushed them about it, it was just that my Nissan lease was over... so maybe some parents don't have to draw any lines if their kids are good and go to the number 1 school in up-state NY.....

Well if they really loved you they would have gotten you the 335i. The 328i does not have enough power for me :) All kidding aside, enjoy the bimmer and the iPad mini!

I believe this is because the retina display is the constraint. They're not going to keep producing 3rd gen with retina when they need all the screens they can get for the 4th gen production.

you can't find it anywhere in store RIGHT NOW. i've been to several targets who have never seen an iPhone 5 yet.
Target? Seriously? Just go to an actual Apple Store. Or order it online. Go on their app at like 10pm and see if the Apple Store near you has in store pick up. If you had simply ordered it, you'd have your iPhone 5 by now even if you had it shipped directly to you.

They were available to order in the UK at time of orders opening, but only with a two week wait, unlike the blacks which were available for launch date.

It used to be the case back in the day of the iMac G3 but that's almost getting to the point it's an unofficial marketing tool. So many people have Apple devices and are on the upgrade train there's tonnes of bargains to be had.

The trend in the UK:
2 year old iPhone 4. New £499, resale value £200. Loss £299.
1.5 years old S2 purchase price £400, resale £150. Loss £250.
6 months old iPad 3 16GB £399, resale £300. Loss £99.
Macbook Pro 13" 2011 RRP £999, resale going rate around £600. Loss £399.

Huge loss percentages but better than Dell et al. In general for technology you always lose alot but Apple has the least worst resale, which isnt very good either. Moral of the story is buy technology you need as it's expensive and you never get back anywhere near what you pay!

Canadian site still shows all models of the Black iPad Mini as delivering for November 2nd.

White is "Available 2 weeks".

I'm guessing they just had a very low unit count of whites and a overall unit count that was greater than actual pre-order demand (at least for the first 10 hours).

Problems with the white finish ? Who else has "White iPhone 4" deja vue here...

Not to be a debbie downer.. but the stock is down about 17 bucks today.. I bought (maybe foolishly ) at 668. It's under 600 now.. Market isn't taking too kindly.. maybe the bubble is bursting :(

Anyone find this a bit strange? There's no way there was extreme demand for the White model vs the Black. I was online at 12AM PST as soon as the preorders opened and the White model was gone in minutes. I have a feeling this is a supply issue and we'll hopefully hear from Apple after the weekend for real stats. And the Black model is still 11/2 delivery right now! *weird*

Thoughts?

This is what I hear...

"Because I don't like the color that most people are choosing therefore its not because most people simply like one color over the other. Instead it's because there's a supply issue with the white model."

I think people just like the white mini more than the black one. There really is nothing else to read into it.

Foolish to buy it at that high. Its long overdue for a major correction.

Sure, if there was a "sell-out" time gap of at most 1 hour.

But the White one sold out literrally in minutes and here we are, 10 hours later, and the Black one isn't sold out yet.

It's quite clear Apple had more blacks than whites available, even accounting for a "white preference" in the buyer base.

I am in the same boat. Looking to hold out till at least Q1 results I think.
But most likely will exit if it hits 700 again.

That's potentially true. I got the white one just fine. It was quick and painless. By 3:03 I had already completed my purchase....lock stock and barrel.

They should've just added the retina and sold it at the same price as iPad 4. Some people just have a size preference and the price isn't going to change that. I am one of those people.

I preferred something smaller than the iPad but bigger than the Android Tablets.

You forgot the final step when Junior opens the non-ipad tablet and whines to no end about how it isn't the iPad that all his friends have, which is followed by a trip to take it back and get the iPad.

This was the risk of releasing it so close to the holidays. It was a bit short-sided, IMO to release a new product at this time.

I definitely see this happening:

Dad:What do you want for Christmas, Johnny?
Johnny: An iPad! I'll use it to help me with my school work and make reminders so I never forget to do my chores!
Dad: Let me ask your mom. (They agree)

3 weeks before Christmas
Wife: The iPad mini does all the things the iPad does and is a lot cheaper! Let's go to the store and get one of those for Johnny and his sister!

Drives to best buy
Clerk: I'm sorry ma'am we're sold out. But we do have stock of the 7" Tablet from X which is $130 cheaper!
Parents relieved.

No iPad is bought because Apple can't keep up with supply.

I don't know why they can never make enough. Secrecy is already out the window, so there's presumably no disadvantage to ramping up production early to make enough.

Don't worry about stock. Apple will artificially make them out of stock to build up demand. I've seen this done with iPad 3 and when release day rolled around the Chinese scalpers were returning them in shopping carts. The tablet market is over saturated with iPads.
