I've seen this before.. AT&T does an amazing job with recovering the cell network after disasters like this. I guess Verizon does it too...AT&T (along with Verizon) does this routinely after disasters. AT&T NDR teams are dedicated to such disasters.

I know Sprint does, not sure about T-Mobile. I would assume they do.I've seen this before.. AT&T does an amazing job with recovering the cell network after disasters like this. I guess Verizon does it too...
But, I'm really curious -- does T-Mobile and/or Sprint not do anything like this? What are their responses to disaster?
In other words; if I'm an AT&T customer, I'm probably going to have cell service after a natural disaster.. But, what happens if I'm a T-Mobile customer? Am I screwed? Sprint? Really Curious...

Good question. So a carrier update enables band 8. band 8 is there to put in coverage where current infrastructure has failed, so there's no coverage.
How do you download the carrier update to connect to the internet if you can't connect to the internet?

Funny thing is only a few AM stations where up for the duration and post of hurricane Maria. Most people here now tune in to the radio since that is what reaches the most people and even officials had to use the an stations to give info in what was happening to the people because there was no other form at the time and the first week. Old tech beat out everything else.I applaud Apple and ATT's effort here.
I also wish Apple would activate the FM chips in the Iphone 6s and lower. Although many radio stations are still powerless, there are a few still operating with power and/or generators.
Receiving news in a crisis is important too. I doubt many news sources will be streaming much info.

What??? I thought the president fixed it by throwing paper towel rolls at Lations???

I'm a little confused about how AT&T can use this band if it has not been approved by the FCC.
Private companies co-operating to benefit people where the Government has failed.
'Evil Capitalism' at work again.
How are they listening to the news with no electricity and no cellular service? I swear you people just make this stuff up out of thin air.To keep the Puerto Rican informed instead of just listening to the news who keeps pushing their own agenda.

Not me, i’m still proud to be an American.
They can't activate them - the FM capability exist in the modems but the pins aren't connected to anything, particularly not to anything which could act as an antenna. There is no software switch they can flip to 'turn it on', the hardware was never designed to be able to use the FM feature.
Coincidentally, I checked my iPhone and went to "About" and up popped a message saying my Carrier settings have been updated. I'm in SoCal. So, maybe you are right. Doesn't matter much, though, since we don't have any Band 8 equipment here (as far as I know!).I think they pushed the update to everyone not just users in PR.
Where is T-mobile with their "fastest" LTE network?
Sad to see this turn into a political fight. For those against helping Puerto Rico, what is your other choice, an independent Puerto Rico? As long as Puerto Rico is a US territory the US has a responsibility to it and its citizens, regardless of mayors or governors.
