I do not understand the reason why people will want to wait a whole night to line up for this thing if you can pre-order it and get it on the same day.

Lol now everything has a countdown clock. I'm waiting myself for the iPhone 5S countdown to invitation to event clock.
I do think is good that preorders have a countdown w/ time differences people can get antsy. Last year I did my preorder w AT&T that night took me 5 mins and since I sleep late I continue watching TV. GL on the hunt!

I bet the AT&T pre-auth server will go down. Last time it wasn't Apple that had the technical difficulties, but rather the server which handles promotional pricing. You had the option of reserving the phone in-store, but who wants to do that? I want mine delivered!

From what I recall, last year was Apple, because I know a few people who went to the AT&T site when they couldn't get anywhere on the Apple site and got their orders in.

Sat out for the iPhone 4. It's not a matter of convenience, it's the whole experience sitting out with hundreds of other like-minded people. I enjoyed it, met some really cool people. We even saw the Words with Friends developers lining up as well.

Apple uses a custom API, it connects to AT&T to verify eligibility.. but if AT&T's server gets overloaded the only way to upgrade is through the AT&T site itself or in store. Each method of ordering has its own server farms.

By the way, does anyone have the iPhone part numbers for the ip5?

Preorder from iPad?

Do you think we can make the preorder from an iPad? For some reason I feel like it might not work as smoothly.

AT&T websit tells me 650 but I sent a text and they replied I would pay the discounted amount plus $250 plus activation. I'm using my wife's upgrade though and giving her my 4S. I hope she won't care. :)

I'm still struggling with how that will work.

So your wife buys the 5, which will be setup for her phone number, on a nano SIM. You contact AT&T and tell them to switch the phone to your number, which will require a new nano SIM, which presumably AT&T will provide. (A second activation fee?) You then hand your wife your 4S, and she contacts AT&T to switch it to her number, which will require a new micro SIM, which presumably AT&T will provide. (A third activation fee?). Right?

I have two lines on a family plan. My little brother always gets my hand-me-down iPhone, and I pay for his line. Out of our two lines, his is always eligible for upgrade pricing, because he's always using the older phone.

I was told by an AT&T rep today that I can order and get the full upgrade discount by using his line's number when I order, and when the phone arrives, I can call them to activate it, but have them activate it using my line/phone number.

Does anyone have experience doing this, and does it ring true? I guess you give them your IMEI over the phone, tell them which of your lines/numbers you want associated with it, and they push the activation through and tie it to the number you've specified?

yes, they call it a cross something upgrade, I have 5 lines and can upgrade 2 of them at 3:01,

My real concern now is to use AT&T Pre-Order site or Apple's Own Pre-Order Site!??!? I would think Apple's would be a better bet in getting shipped without any issues or delays.

I was told that SIMs are single use - changing the number requires changing the SIM, but that the carrier happily provides new ones no problem (but not over the phone....).

The uncertainty around all this makes me plan to just go into the AT&T store with the other person and do the whole thing in person.

Okay, it's 12:43 am EDT here in the Detroit area, and while i really WANT to stay up until 3 am and order this phone (At&T, black, 64 GB, by the way), I'm already disappointed that I wont be HOLDING it until next week! By the way, if I wait until 7 am (vs. 3 am), will that change the date I receive the phone? It seems to me, the last time I went through this (with the iPhone 4 in the summer of 2010), I ordered online a day or two after it went for sale, and I still received the phone on the official date the following week when it became available in stores.

What was the deal with the iPhone 4S? How long after it went on sale did there become a delay in the ship date?

Good observations. Can't they just alter the SIM card? That's probably not possible and I'm gonna get laughed at but whatever. Maybe I should call AT&T in a few days and tell them to send me a nano sim so I'm ready to go.

Also I can use a nano sim adapter for the old iPhone 4S I'm assuming.

Also can't I just cut my 4s SIM card to nano size? I'm a genius!!

Free sims

AT&T gives out sims like they are candy. Have it done at the apple store. One activation fee.

What would be smarter?

Would it be wiser to pre order from apple or atts site? and what information will I need? This is my first time pre ordering :/

I too was on the phone with AT&T today to see what we could do because we have 4 phones and a big bill every month and mine isn't the main number. Two younger brothers and my son. My son got my old iPhone 4 turned on a few months ago so since he NEVER got a sub'd phone he is eligible for an upgrade. They said that I can do a cross upgrade. Where I buy the 5 under his number and either go to an AT&T store or can do it over the phone but they will make the 5 mine and my 4S my sons. Not sure what will happen next year with the iPhone 5S (or iPhone 7 as every troll will call it) but for this one I will do that.

Still kind of messed up that last year I got the "early upgrade" price and paid $700 for the damn phone and I'm not even eligible for "early upgrade" pricing till October. (which is a year so I understand) but still no love for a valued customer since BEFORE the first iPhone with 4/5 phones on the account and most buy phones at non-full sub price. Except one brother who is the main number (my HUGE mistake for doing that lol) gets his every year for sub price. Though this year he is pissed because they changed that policy where the main account holder isn't auto sub price. Welcome to my world bro ;)

Apple and others have successfully made me feel excited about the iPhone 5 even though I don't plan on getting one until pretty long after it is released. That's good marketing.

I was happy to look at my AAPL go up in the past 2 days, though.

I use the upgrades from my parents account. Used it for the 4 and will use it for the 5. From the 3GS to the 4 obviously they change to the smaller sim. Keep in mind we have two separate accounts. So I upgrade on of their lines since they don't mind. I get the phone in the mail. Then I go to AT&T store and give them my phone number, say I bought the new iPhone etc and need the new sim. They give it to me then I pop it in the phone and no problems. I've never had to call anyone to get anyone activated. Same way if your wife has a 4s or a 4 if you swap sim cards between the two, wherever your sim card is that's going to be your phone. Easy peasy.
