AT&T gives out sims like they are candy. Have it done at the apple store. One activation fee.

Cool thanks. I just freaked out and read a thread about this and I think you're right. Do I need my iPhone 5 with me or can I walk into an AT&T store before and request one? Assuming they have them in stock.

Can someone clarify

Can I pre-order if I just want to replace my existing iPhone (Verizon) when the clock strike 12:01? I understand I have to pay full price. The reason is my current phone is damaged and the battery won't hold a charge.

I was told by an AT&T rep on the phone that no new SIM would be required -- if I order an upgrade-price phone using my brother's line's number, when I get the phone in the mail, I can call them, use the SIM that shipped with it, and have them activate it for use with my number.

Granted, I have no idea if this guy was on crack or not.

Just give them your phone number and show them your ID and they will just make a new one right there do your account. Done.

Interesting. The more phones AT&T sells the worse their quarter will look, since each one requires an upfront subsidy of $450 (though that is spread over 2 years).

It should be fine, since I'm quite sure the accounting will let them spread the expense over the two years.

Unlocked iPhones will not be included in tomorrow's pre-sale. Following the 4s example, unlocked iPhones probably will not be available in the U.S. until a couple of weeks after the initial launch.

I think they make you verify a couple pieces of info so they can confirm it's your account. You think I'd remember given I've bought every new iPhone on release day, but I switch back and forth between ordering through Apple and AT&T so it all gets jumbled up in my head.

seriously? the new iphone 5 has a nanosim, not even close! i hate it when cs reps are ill informed!

Wut

TechCrunch reported that unlocked pricing for the iPhone 5 was going to be $649 (16GB), $749 (32GB), and $849 (64GB) but that the unlocked phones would not be available until several weeks after the launch.

Wut, 16GB iphone costs $225USD more in NZ than the US.. how does it cost $225 extra to send it from China to NZ instead of China to the US?

I can't decide whether to order from Apple or AT&T! Any tips?

Apple doesn't charge a re-stocking fee if I want to return it; AT&T does. AT&T lets you return to a retail store if ordered online; Apple doesn't.

I assume they both charge the same upgrade fee?

buy from apple, that way if it goes badly they will give you free stuff!! at&t never hooks someone up with a free accessory with a bad experience!

But what I'm purchasing is really a replacement for my existing iPhone. I'll still have the same contract. I won't qualify for subsidized phone until October. Be that as it may, I'll know shortly.

He's right. The sim (nano sim in this case) that comes with the phone isn't activated. You just call AT&T after receiving the phone and give them a couple numbers off the new sim so they can activate it on your line. I do it every year.

I don't think you understand -- when I get the new iPhone 5, I would call them to activate it, and have them associate the nano-SIM it shipped with with my phone number, event hough when I ordered it, I entered my brother's number in order to qualify for the cheaper pricing. I send my iPhone 4S to him, he pops the SIM he's been using in his iPhone 4 into the 4S, and he's all good. So he uses the micro-SIM he has been using, I use the brand-new nano-SIM that comes with the 5. The guy implied that over the phone, they can associate the new nano-SIM with my phone line during the activation process. At that point, the micro-SIM I've been using in my 4S becomes a piece of trash, I guess.

dont need to call. the nano sim comes with the phone and its all activated with itunes. you only need to call if you bought the phone at full price. if you buy using an upgrade its already preloaded in the system. plug into itunes and all automatic.

Well in that case, HECK YEAH. :D Thanks!!! :apple:

Just noticed that the third party site I get my teacher's discount from is placing pre- orders for us; I just sent it in and I'm going to bed!

Have a good one, sleepy east-coasters!

But the phone number used to get the 5 in order to qualify for the cheaper price is NOT the number I actually want to have get activated to the new nano-SIM that comes with the phone.

Confusing, I know, but I do get to have the upgrade price every year, thanks to me paying for my brother and always giving him my 1-year-old iPhones. :)
