Regarding phone swap

I was told by the AT&T rep. buy the phone from apple or where ever (using the eligible line) They use this for verification for new 2year commitment.
Once you get the phone plug into iTunes and it will ask for your phone number that you want associated with the phone. The sim cards in the iPhones are blank when they arrive and are not attached to a account. iTunes connects to AT&T and assigns a number at that time. They do this for security reasons. makes since to me because anybody that gets hold of the phone before activation will be able to use your phone account and deactivating your other phone. Hope this helps and explains why it SHOULD work. Will see!!
She did say if for some reason you don't get the number in iTunes Don't activate the phone first call or come into the store and they will do the transfer.

I don't think you understand -- when I get the new iPhone 5, I would call them to activate it, and have them associate the nano-SIM it shipped with with my phone number, event hough when I ordered it, I entered my brother's number in order to qualify for the cheaper pricing. I send my iPhone 4S to him, he pops the SIM he's been using in his iPhone 4 into the 4S, and he's all good. So he uses the micro-SIM he has been using, I use the brand-new nano-SIM that comes with the 5. The guy implied that over the phone, they can associate the new nano-SIM with my phone line during the activation process. At that point, the micro-SIM I've been using in my 4S becomes a piece of trash, I guess.

That's the same thing I do except I go to the local store and get a new sim instead of using the in the phone just to be on the safe side. So that way I can guarantee the sim I pop in is tied to the correct account. Nothing like calling AT&T and having to explain something very simple for 30 minutes when a 10 minute drive is faster and doesn't result in a headache.

Well, I tried laying down for an hour but could not sleep:(. Now having some caffeine. Only 1 hour, 51 minutes left before the craziness begins:).

dont need to call. the nano sim comes with the phone and its all activated with itunes. you only need to call if you bought the phone at full price. if you buy using an upgrade its already preloaded in the system. plug into itunes and all automatic.

Haha, I love how these discussions get lost in the fray.

You need to call if you bought it under someone else's upgrade, so you can switch the phone (which comes with the preconfigured SIM, as you note) to the person who actually ordered it.

But the phone number used to get the 5 in order to qualify for the cheaper price is NOT the number I actually want to have get activated to the new nano-SIM that comes with the phone.

Confusing, I know, but I do get to have the upgrade price every year, thanks to me paying for my brother and always giving him my 1-year-old iPhones. :)

i think the launch limit is 2 iphones per customer, but i could be wrong. it sounds like you will need to call if you are activating on another line. but whatever you do make sure that the sim card isnt deactivated or you'll be forced to buy a new one OR will need to ask them to send you one.

I love that show. I have been watching it since season one. It is good to see someone who likes it as well. :]

I have to alternate watching episodes of Breaking Bad and Adventure Time, so I don't feel so horrible after watching Breaking Bad. It's a great show but kind of makes you feel dead inside, if you know what I mean...

Can someone please explain this process for me? I've never preordered a phone online. I'm an existing iPhone 4 user on AT&T and I have a few questions:

First, should I preorder it from Apple's website or AT&T's? Is there an advantage of one over the other? Either way the phone will get shipped to my home right?

Second, how do I activate it? Do I need to take the phone into an AT&T store and have them activate it for me?

Thanks!

Only time i can say love the timezone.

3:20 pm make some coffee watch some youtube or learn 100 different way of saying Apple store is down.

I don't think it really matters who you order it through. To activate just turn it on and follow the instructions. Make sure you have backed up your current phone first then after activation do a sync through iTunes and "restore from backup". That will put all your apps, etc. on to your new phone.

You have to call if you're doing an upgrade swap, which is what we're doing.

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. It is amazing that it is even on regular cable. It gets pretty crazy.

Question

I asked a similar question earlier and i'm still slightly confused. Since i'm with AT&T right now and i'm definitely switching over to Verizon can I not order the phone through Verizon tonight? . . . . From what I understand if I want a phone tonight I have to pay full price? Or will I be able to order through Verizon and agree to a 2 year contract as well? Please bare with me lol.... Thanks :D

I have everything backed up through iCloud. I'm assuming then that an iTunes sync isn't necessary, and I'll be able to do a restore from iCloud backup?

I tried this with the iPhone 4 when it first came out. The AT&T rep also told me this and it ended up not working. We tried all the over-the-phone stuff and none of it worked. I ended up having to go to the AT&T store to get a new SIM. Maybe they changed it now. I've seen a couple of posts on here saying they did the upgrade swap over the phone and it worked.
