This whole Apple vs. Xiaomi ad drama feels meaningless in the bigger picture. China has been ripping off IP for decades with zero consequences, which is a far bigger issue than some cheeky billboard in India. It’s exactly that kind of unchecked theft that led Trump to hammer China with tariffs in the first place. Until there’s real enforcement, moves like this are just noise.

Most advertising and marketing tactics are meaningless in the bigger picture, irrespective of the product. It's generating publicity and grabbing attention in a world filled with with things trying to grab our attention.

It's only purpose is to persuade you to buy the product and for the brand to live in your head. It doesn't need to have any substance or meaning beyond that.

Red Bull never gave me wings. But "Red Bull gives you wings" is burned into my memory forever.

I can't believe this trend is now a trend again. Like how much of a camera do you really need to take a photo of your cat.

I had the Lumia 1020 with the optional camera grip. As a hobby photographer, I really enjoyed that camera with the full manual controls. It was such a shame that the camera was so slow. You had to wait almost 1 second between shots, as the processor couldn't handle the raw data. The camera is a criterion for me when I look for a new phone.

Why would they, if the ads, legal or illegal, get people taking about Apple and Samsung as well as talking about Xiaomi?
Again, the point that Apple and Samsung are making isn't that their products are being referenced (and in one sense count as free advertising for Apple and Samsung). It's that these specific ads might be illegal in India. Note that the companies have not sued, they just sent cease and desist letters. If Xiaomi continues, then the companies will likely sue. All this needs to be understood in the context of Indian laws. Somewhere else it might just be ignored, but if in a particular country such advertising is illegal, companies would and likely should at least bring that up with the company that is supposedly breaking the law.

They poked a little fun at the "PC" but the ads did not mock. Mocking is being cruel and derisive. Those ads were not that.

Mockery is in the delivery. Like the other poster said, they just had "funny" people delivering it, so it didn't land as cruel.

That said, it was a time when Apple had some personality and some humor. Lately, the entire company is serious and their entire persona is various flavors of gray...Zero smiles, zero frowns, just 😐. When was the last time an Apple ad made anyone chuckle?

But, outside of India, people are following the story, as on here. The cynic in me would very much say Apple and Samsung are very happy that their threatening legal action has pushed this story international, because it's publicity. Extending that, part of the decision to threaten legal action or not threaten legal action would be factoring in the publicity the manufactured drama creates.

Do some looking at the Xiaomi Ultra 15 -- it looks fantastic. I'd buy this in a heartbeat if there was a US model.

Why can't Apple do this:

Why the hell would you buy something like that?

If you want a camera, buy a Camera. Not a thing pretending to be one.

Have to stop pretending smartphones are cameras. There's absolutely no substitute for an actual chunk of glass in front of the sensor whatever they tell you.
