I had the Lumia 1020 with the optional camera grip. As a hobby photographer, I really enjoyed that camera with the full manual controls. It was such a shame that the camera was so slow. You had to wait almost 1 second between shots, as the processor couldn't handle the raw data. The camera is a criterion for me when I look for a new phone.

Interesting. I thought hobby photographers buy actual cameras?

I always thought the Justin Long and John Hodgman Mac vs PC ads were cringe, but I won't deny they were effective.

My favourite Apple ad of all time is a Mac vs PC ad though, this one:

I have never seen that ad, but the opposite of that situation is exactly what happened to my wife when she was in law school (around 2004). She was working on something on a borrowed Mac laptop and something happened and it lost the current document, and the saved copy of it she had been working on for days was corrupted.

She refused to ever use Apple again after that, and has stuck to it. She is a die-hard Pixel user, and only uses Windows computers and a Surface tablet.

Every Leica lens / camera I have used over the years have been very good quality. Maybe Apple and Samsung need to step up their specs?

I understand Apple in this because to be fair it’s really annoying when strangers call you cute 😜😝

I think the PRC should weigh in with some, “The better to see you with, my dear,” adds…

I thought he the rule of photography was "It's not the camera, it's the person behind the camera"?

I don't know man, I'm definitely not even close to being a photographer (not even a hobbyist), but I do own a Canon M50 for when I go on a trip or something and want to take photos. The photos iPhones take are ultra processed, I really dislike what my 14 Pro captures. The last phone camera I did enjoy was maybe iPhone 4S or 5. Anyways, I'm really not a photography oriented person but I though people who are hobbyist in this field use real dedicated cameras and I always considered iPhones to be heavily marketed point and shoot at best with really heavy image processing. Like, having 16e camera in an iPhone today would be 100% enough for me personally, gigantic lenses on phones are obnoxious in my opinion.

I can't believe this trend is now a trend again. Like how much of a camera do you really need to take a photo of your cat.

Yep, I get that, for a lot of people, the camera is the most important thing on their phone, but, to be honest, I'm not a huge photography enthusiast.

It's why, in the end I got an iPhone 16 not a 16 pro. I realized I wouldn't really get any extra value out of having more and better cameras, and I would be happier not having such a massive camera bump.

I still don't really get why Apple puts rear-facing cameras on iPads.

Why the hell would you buy something like that?

If you want a camera, buy a Camera. Not a thing pretending to be one.

Have to stop pretending smartphones are cameras. There's absolutely no substitute for an actual chunk of glass in front of the sensor whatever they tell you.
As someone who owns a full frame mirrorless camera with many high quality lenses, I both agree and disagree. Smartphones are a lot more capable than what they're given credit for, and they make great substitutes for the point and shoot cameras of yesteryear. If I'm traveling somewhere that I know I'm going to want great shots I will absolutely pack my full gear, but it's also handy to have a high quality camera that I have on me at all times. But I also enjoy spending hours doing editing in post to get things just to my liking, which is not everyone's cup of tea.

While I’m sure Xiaomi makes great cameras for their smartphones, but does anyone see that it as pretty obnoxious? If I needed that level of detail, it doesn’t matter if it’s Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi or OnePlus, I’m buying a Sony, Canon or Nikon digital camera.
I own a Nikon mirrorless camera, so I don't disagree with that part of your statement. However, I would buy this in a heartbeat if there was a U.S. version for the convenience of having a 1" sensor point-and-shoot with me everywhere I go.

I still don't really get why Apple puts rear-facing cameras on iPads.

Same, and not only that they put the cameras there (which I sort of accept as being necessary for video calls, you know), but why make it so large? They could just as well put some simple single lense camera for the basic task it needs to do. I can't wrap my head around the fact that the iPad simply doens't lay flat on the table because of this obnoxiously large and completely unnecessary camera bump. An iPhone 5 camera would do the job.

The ads look good to me. Also, I really wish we were still allowed to let Chinese phones compete in the US. Not that I may not still carry an iPhone, but I would like our market to actually be free.
