Yeah my old 2010 D3100 takes better photos than ANY smartphone today...

Good luck getting that out of a phone - ZERO post processing...

Can you fit your D3100 in your pocket? You're an extremely black-and-white person -- no grey area in your mind that different tools are for different uses. Did anyone here say that a camera phone was an exact replacement for a DSLR? You seem to be having an argument with no one.

Not a fan of Xiaomi but that camera looks amazing. I wish Apple would just cut the foreplay and make an iPhone Camera (thick quality lens).
What I learned from having a previous phone with a big round camera section (a Kodak Ektra) is that you really need a case to protect that ring from bumping into things. If your case has a neck strap, you can just wear it like a traditional compact camera.

While I’m sure Xiaomi makes great cameras for their smartphones, but does anyone see that it as pretty obnoxious? If I needed that level of detail, it doesn’t matter if it’s Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi or OnePlus, I’m buying a Sony, Canon or Nikon digital camera.

'The best camera is the one you have with you.'

For many people, a phone of some kind is pretty much a necessity, so they're going to try to always have it with them, and they'll make room in their budget for it, too. They don't always have room or money for a whole extra camera.

edit: I see at least one other person beat me to the quote.

Yes, we do. For example I have a Canon fullframe camera and a Leica compact camera. But you don’t always want to bring a camera with you. If you‘re out with friends, on your commute, etc the phone is often a more convenient choice.
Thankfully there is a resurgence in pocketable cameras with proper lenses, zoom, and good 1 inch+ sensors.

I have and love using my GEN1 Sony ZV1, Ricoh just upgraded their camera, and there are some other options on the horizon.

For regular cameras, I rock either an R5 MK1, or R6 MK2 with my good glass.

Yeah but are you doing some hardcore photography when you're with friends or when you commute? Or are you just taking pictures of your lunch or coffee for social media, or taking selfies with friends? You know what I mean? 😄 How much of a camera does one need to these situations? Not trying to downplay what you do, but like...for me, it's like watching movies on a phone. It's just not...it.

They don't need to.

If you've ever used a Xiaomi, you'll see it's shiny trash. Asian market likes big numbers and shiny stuff, not quality.
Rubbish. I’ve had multiple Xiaomis, never had an issue with any of them and good prices, infact I still have a Mi Max 3 and a 9t Pro both running perfectly. I love their form factors, the body, screen and battery life of the max, and the popup camera and notchless screen of the 9t is a joy.

Can you take a picture with your phone in this quality with the mountains in the back being this big in the photo? Like is it generally possible to do with a phone camera? I’ve tried a few times by zooming in, but the quality wasn’t great.

Exactly. No chance in hell.

The problem was my camera was in my bag and my partner was driving. If I had the camera out that photo would be on the wall.

Again, you're comparing apples and oranges. You just won't give up. Did you know a bicycle and a Tesla both get you from point A to point B, but some prefer one over the other and NO ONE compares the two?

In one fell swoop, Xiaomi positioned itself as an alternate choice in what was a two horse duopoly in the premium SP Indian market.

Exactly, but for those types of photos you don't need an iPhone with a big camera bump. Back when the cameras were flush they were much good enough for snap shots with your friends. They really are not that much better now, that warrants the price tag and the thick camera bump that is now 1/3 of the phone.

I mean, there was this, but it was certainly more elegant…

And then there was this.
🤣

Do some looking at the Xiaomi Ultra 15 -- it looks fantastic. I'd buy this in a heartbeat if there was a US model.

Why can't Apple do this:

I would buy it. If Apple made something like that I'd buy the top end model. Call it the iPhone Pro Photo - a Max size phone that has a huge camera bump a la the Xiaomi 15U. Could be fatter than the others. A screw mount on the side, multiple ports, TB5, IP68 or above pls and pls make the optional grip (it could go over the new camera button and add more smarts)

Yep, I get that, for a lot of people, the camera is the most important thing on their phone, but, to be honest, I'm not a huge photography enthusiast.

It's why, in the end I got an iPhone 16 not a 16 pro. I realized I wouldn't really get any extra value out of having more and better cameras, and I would be happier not having such a massive camera bump.

I still don't really get why Apple puts rear-facing cameras on iPads.
I am a photographer and wish my iPad had a rear facing camera at least as good as an iPhone camera. It would be help to me to have quality camera with that large of a display. Especially if there were features like a shallow depth of field and single or even multiple selective focus points.
