If I write a song and call it Satisfaction and change it up a bit to make it a rap song so today's youth will like it, wouldn't that be copying since the Rolling Stones wrote it 50 years ago?

Yes, and you would pay royalties to the copyright holder or be sued...

Quite true. But what if I claim I had a patent on guitar music?

Try the voice recognition on the SIII and compare it to SIRI and get back to me.

You can claim anything you want. Without the actual patent it's as valuable as a post on an Internet forum.

Team Samsung for the sake of consumers. I could care less who copied who. I don't want these lawsuits to go out of control!

Apple Wins - Apple's Lawyers Win, More Lawsuits, Consumers will eventually lose with less smartphone choices in the market.
Samsung Wins - Apple's Lawyers Lose, Consumers can continue to have the status quo, Apple still is wining regardless.

Everyone copies each other. There patents for some things are unwarranted. This case should have been dismissed entirely.

from what i've been told by a few lawyer friends, corporate lawyers like in this trial are on the companies retainer, they make the same whether they win or lose.

Samsung originally have no starting point. They took action by infringing Apple patents and claiming it as their own.

Without Apple's patents, Samsung wouldn't have gone this far. Nor, Samsung would have created the Galaxy line of smartphones.

So therefore, Samsung is the real copycat here! It's good to see that Samsung has been punished dearly for its dirty act.

Lol. What a joke. You have absolutely no argument. The proofs in the pudding (billion dollars). You can't argue against that, that's the fact. You've been exposed, beaten and battered and now everyone knows your a troll. You have lost all credibility and can no longer be taken seriously in anything you post. Keep covering your ears and yelling "lalala I can't hear you" whenever someone counters your your now debunked opinions. Maybe you can come back if Samsung wins in appeals court.

I look forward to your resignation.

What did I post that wasn't true? Go back and read every post I made in this thread. Just because you don't like what I posted doesn't give you the right to call me a troll. In fact, it's against the TOS.

That's the great thing about opinions - everyone gets to have one.

And, seriously? "Crapents"?

If you meant "flat", then, you may not think so, but apparently the people selected for the jury do.

Since said jury ruled overwhelmingly in favor of Apple, you can either deduce that they were all biased towards Apple (kind of unlikely), or that they thought the patents were valid (more in the realm of possibility).

valid and being crap are two different things. What is proves is the patent law needs to be reformed. The patent apple got are crap plan and simple. Valid does not mean that they are not crap. It means US patent law is crap. The fact that many of those same patents are being declared invalid the the rest of the world also speaks volumes about how crappy they are.

"Today’s verdict should not be viewed as a win for Apple, but as a loss for the American consumer. It will lead to fewer choices, less innovation, and potentially higher prices. It is unfortunate that patent law can be manipulated to give one company a monopoly over rectangles with rounded corners, or technology that is being improved every day by Samsung and other companies. Consumers have the right to choices, and they know what they are buying when they purchase Samsung products. This is not the final word in this case or in battles being waged in courts and tribunals around the world, some of which have already rejected many of Apple’s claims. Samsung will continue to innovate and offer choices for the consumer."

Even after being smacked down for stealing they have to lie for effect. The jury did not find the rectangle and rounded corners to be copied. Samsung has no shame.

That statement serves as an appeal to the entirety of this apple ********; not just this case.

They sure are some tenacious little buggers.

But I am ashamed to be an Asian
Hope other companies learn something. Tbh, this is already too late. Samesung has already reaped the benefits and established themselves based on stolen ideas.

Samsung tries nonsensical Fandroid talking point on jury. Jury isn't dumb enough to go for it.

So Samsung tries nonsensical talking point on news-reading public.

No wonder they can't create their own designs. They have no originality.

Like apple has much originality. If you look at all the markets Samsung is in and where they are producing top of the line products, and than you look at their investment in R&D and compare that too apples, you'll notice Samsung is ahead of them in "originality."

Apple takes things from multiple other sources, adds ONE headline feature themselves, slaps a logo on it, and boom you have a "revolutionary" product.

I'd like to see apple try to take on google, since apparently android is a stolen operating system. Shame it will never happen since Apple knows that would be the end of them. Quite funny how they only go for the branches but never the root.

My favorite: "Today’s verdict should not be viewed as a win for Apple, but as a loss for the American consumer."

Still trying to figure out how I am losing by using the best mobile devices, laptops, and desktops on the planet? *Scratches Head*

Microsoft is is good shape because they and Apple have a cross licensing deal.

The one thing that stood out for me in following this case is how Steve Job's reached out to Samsung and offered them a licensing deal. Steve did this because he valued Samsung as a supply partner. However, Samsung walked away feeling they didn't need to do this. Well its pay time now you copy cats!

The bottom line for all consumers that makes sense is simple. The CEO's of these companies should be able to sit in a room and come up with cross patent licensing deals and put all these patent wars behind us.

Companies like Samsung though need to learn to innovate, because anyone seeing the evidence even showing up on sites like MacRumors and come away feeling like Apple is a bully or wrong clearly isn't paying attention or either they just don't get it.

This verdict means all these companies need to innovate and that is what is good for consumers. I also love these self-righteous folks "This is my last Apple product" OH SHUT UP!

We will never really know who copied who, come on. Whoever has the higher paid lawyers will win. I loathe the comments of "eff Apple, those bullies!" or, "Go Samsung, fight it out". Did YOU make these patents? No. Get off your high horse and realize you have NO clue what actually happened.

If anything this is going to create more innovation and is a win for consumers. Just goes to show Samsung doesn't know what it means to innovate. They are probably going "Oh no! Now we have to innovate by thinking of our OWN ideas??? What has the world come to??"

What put me on Apple's side was the Samsung document which outlined all the features that are "better" on iPhone and then described how they must try to implement those features into the Galaxy S.

Right on! Even in their statement, they tried to lie or convince ppl they are the victims

Wow really?
Thanks for the laugh mate! Like, the Korean designers spend 21 hours per day to copy the color of icons...great innovation!
Samsung makes good 'cheap' tvs. And... Maybe a toaster? :D but I'm sure they have stolen something on those two too!

Although I do believe a few of Apple's patent claims were valid, the rest were just BS and completely unwarranted Seriously, a patent on a rectangle? Come on.
Bingo... and just goes to show how flawed and far out of date our patent system is, there are patents they (nor other companies) should have ever been given. This will go on for years with appeals anyway. Even the jury was bad, judge had to give a quick synopsis of patents and copyright etc as they didn't even know what that was. Talk about lop sided. However with Google gearing up with moto's patents, what will Apples response be? They'll pry lose and do the same thing, Apple will go to appeals etc. Stuff like this in the corporate world is nothing but a horse and pony show.... for one thing the only ones making out are not the companies but the attorneys, and in turn this does nothing but hurt consumers.

Just goes to show why even disregarding this, people/businesses have been clamoring for a complete revamp of our patent system.

Many of Samsung's engineers are actually american, and at least Samsung is innovating upon android. Look at some of the amazing technical features of Touchwiz, albeit some of them are dodgy at times, but they at least implement them. The icons you reference as well, date Apple back over a decade, so yea Apple copied them too. As to your comment on them making "cheap" tv's, please clarify this, last time I checked they were one of the leaders in the market.

I'm not criticizing you. I commented on your post. Other than in Appleland, the S3 is considered the more advanced phone. That may change in a couple of weeks with the new iPhone.

GS3 is the most advanced phone in hardware features only (and I reckon that the HTC One X is superior with its LG full RGB IPS display). Apple has proven that a device is far more than just hardware specs. Design, craftsmanship, and software are arguably even more important.

Samsung's horrible GUI is just laughable. Other companies like HTC actually innovate and don't just rely on Google to supply the OS, then skin it with a lame iOS knock-off. Have you tried using Bada? It's pathetic.

This further solidifies why I'll be purchasing a Samsung Galaxy Nexus as my next mobile device of choice.

Copyright law needs to be radically changed to favor the consumer, otherwise we'll be subject to a complete lack of innovation and a technological regression for all society.

None of this was copyright law.....
