I'm confused. If this isn't replacing the MacBook Air and it's THINNER than the Air, then doesn't the Air kind of lose its meaning?
Me too, especially after Phil made the comment during the presentation, regarding space inside for the battery, "We don't want to sell air!!"

Hold on there sir.

That was just one of many usage scenarios where it would be more favorable to have at LEAST two ports.

For example, my current set up is that when I get home, I connect my Macbook to an external, 19" monitor. I close the lid, and plug in my USB Mouse/Keyboard and plug in the power. That way, I have more screen space.

I could buy a bluetooth mouse/keyboard... But then, it doesn't stop there anyways. Then I plug in my USB 3.0 HDD and do backups, for example.
Can't plug in the MBA when it's backing up? Oh crap.

Can't use my mouse while using a flash drive?

Cloud transfer isn't easy especially across eco-systems. Nor do I have a cloud service common between my School computers and my home computer.

There are many reasons that you'd want more than one port. I don't think it's fair to say that having one port and only one port is advantageous or even feasible.

In your scenario why wouldn't you get the USBc adapter and just plug your existing home setup into it, then you just connect one cable and all the things you mentioned will work!?!?!?

The retina display needs the battery?

oh okay. i would think thinks is since their 13 inch retina was getting 8 hours and they claimed that there was more space for battery that wouldve been issused. Also, how long have they have been making retina displays? shouldn't have they by now; had a remedy for a battery drain from a retina display? Also, the processor power is quite low. But maybe, im insane. I miss Steve Jobs.:apple::apple:

Apple has become synonymous with ‘Thin’ products so I'm guessing they kill the 'Air' part of their products because of that. Its sort of a given that their products are sleek... It would be like Ferrari saying: Ferrari Enzo 'Fast'

1) Definitely not for me as I need something with a lot more power on a normal basis.

2) This new MacBook Air is Apple directing this particular Mac model towards consumable devices such as the iPad.

The shift in the consumable direction, that is, a low-powered computer that is more capable than a tablet, is great for 80% of the population. I just hope they don't forget the remaining user base that needs the hardware to make the content intended for consumption.

Thank you. apple has the best marketing. i wonder if they have a department that makes up these phrases. lol.

If anyone is interested in performing any activity which will max out this computer's limits as designed

This computer should be designed (like all others) so that it can be operated with the CPU maxed out 100% of the time with no adverse issues other than faster battery drain and/or CPU throttling. If it can't safely do this within the thermal constraints of the chassis then it is extremely poorly designed.

Certain CPU bound tasks in which there is a directly proportional relationship between duration of the task and available CPU will always max the CPU no matter how weak or strong the CPU. Tasks such as compression/decompression and media encoding are examples of tasks like this.

It's not underpowered. It's just less powerful than larger laptops.

No, it is underpowered. Core-M powered Windows machines were good for general web browsing and general usage, but that was their limit. Core-M isn't really significantly better than an Atom CPU in the real world, no matter what Intel's daft marketing materials would have you believe.

This computer is a waste of people's hard earned money.

Why doesn't Apple just call it what it is - an ipad with a keyboard.

1 port, no headphone jack, 12 inch screen, weak processor, $1300 base.

Spray paint a computer gold and call it "revolutionary"

That's messed up.

Um, it does indeed have a headphone jack, actually.

Never has this emoticon been more relevant:

yeah, i wonder whats lighter than air??? a macbook. I wonder if it will float away, if i threw it?

How is this reinventing a notebook? It's thinner but it's still a notebook.

Very conflicted

Pros:

* Finally the screen a 11/12" machine needs.
* Unlike the iPhone, I actually do still find the 11 inch Air heavy enough that it affects my shoulder sometimes. There's value to making it lighter.
* It's pretty attractive.
* I think I could actually live with USB-C.
* Whichever idiot in pre-production thought it was a good idea to put the power button where the escape key is has clearly been fired out of a cannon.

Cons:

* Core-M, Core-M, Core-M! Only Apple could give us the choice between a Macbook Air with loads of power but the worst screen in the industry or a device with a lovely screen and nowhere near enough power to run it. Arrrrghh.
*I'm slightly worried that they keyboard will be awful to actually type on no matter how clever it is.
* One USB-C port is just idiotic when it's used for charging. It needs two. It clearly, clearly needs two.
* And it doesn't even ship with a passthrough connector for the power supply? Wait, Apple doesn't even MAKE a passthrough connector for the power supply?

Jesus H. Christ.

I don't know. I suspect the second edition of this machine will be MUCH better. It'll have Skylake, and I suspect the idiot who decided on one USB port will be fired out of the same cannon as the escape key cretin.

It just depends on if that comes quickly before my 2011 Air dies.

This would be much less of an issue if they'd fixed the screen on the new Air...

One USB?! Unusable for a developer. Aside from being about a pound and a half lighter, I'm not seeing any advantage over the 13" pro. Am I missing something?

Skylake Core-M is being released in the second half of this year, I can't help but wonder how long before this MacBook gets an update. October? Next March?

This laptop will help sell more 13" MBP Retina:rolleyes:

Price is within expectations and it ships with a 256GB drive standard. Solid. But how does well that Core M processor perform? Also, what does the keyboard feel like? I'm sure the trackpad is a home run though.

I can't say it's an instant purchase, but I certainly can't wait to try one in a store. :D

Anandtech did a review of a reference tablet with the same processor and integrated GPU. It's performance is pretty good for a fan less design.

It beats the crap out of a Surface Pro with a 15W TDP and it only has a 4.5W TDP.

This is not supposed to be a replacement for the 13" Pro. It's supposed to be a replacement for the 11" Air.

But even Apple know the processor is a bit too embarrassing to actually sell it like that, so they're keeping the Air for a year or two.

hey, but if you put lipstick on a pig. its a modern pig. No?

If they gutted the pig and stuffed a sheep in there leaving it looking like a pig on a diet ,it'd still be a pig from everyone's perspective except for the surgeon/farmer.

He is head of design, but that doesn't mean he's responsible for the actual hardware choices. That's Dan Riccio's arena.

I'm pretty sure design dictates engineering at Apple.

A huge portion of users will never use the ports on their existing notebooks

I don't buy this for one second and i'm pretty sure you have nothing to back this claim up. Ports will be one of those things users never really appreciated until they were taken away from them.

Off the top of my head, the following extremely common tasks will not be possible without an adapter (assuming Macbook is plugged in):

1. Use of an external display.
2. Use of external hard drive or USB flash drive for data or time machine backups.
3. No wired printer or scanner connectivity
4. No wired keyboard or mouse connectivity
5. Cannot charge iPhone, iPad or other USB device.
6. Cannot import photos from camera using SD card.
7. Cannot get wired networking.

And Skylake is being released second half of this year. I can't help but wonder if this machine will be updated in the October iPad/Macbook event with new processor.
