My wife got excited about this when i told her. She has been eligible for an upgrade since Oct. I got the 8gb iPhone on opening weekend and she is about to lose it. i am encouraging her to wait until iPhone 2.0 or whatever comes next.

Nope, the reason there's no 32gig iPhone is the same reason there wasn't a 16gig iPhone until now.

Both devices have two slots in their motherboard.

iPhone = 1 slot for memory + 1 for phone hardware
iPod Touch = 2 slots for memory

So the 8 gig iPhone and 16 gig iPod Touch both had 8gb memory chips. These two newer models both have 16 gig memory chips, the iPhone has one, whereas the Touch has two.

Unless a major redesign of hardware occurs you can expect them to always debut in this fashion, and by that I mean the next release will be a 32gb iPhone and a 64gb Touch.

This is getting me really excited now about the possibility of iPhone 2.0 having 32GB :)

Nooooo!!

This is agonizing. I have wanted an iPhone since well before they were released, and have been holding out for one with a bigger capacity. Finally, after the update at MacWorld and constant daily visits to this website I figured there would be no significant hardware releases for a while, and not being able to stand it any longer broke down and bought one. This was EXACTLY 2 WEEKS AND ONE DAY AGO. If this release had come yesterday I could have still returned it and upgraded. F#%*!!!

Just for the record, I'd never use all caps...

As a start? The 64GB SSD has 64 flash chips in it. Rework your algebra and you'll find that the SSD is quite a deal.

http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/newsView.do?news_id=828

As a continuation, I believe that the flash in the iPhone/iTouch is glorified flash card memory, basically a little better than the flash that goes into a CF card, if even that.

That stuff is a far, far, far cry from the flash that has to go in an SSD. You don't want to sit there with an SSD that caps out at 10-20MB/s transfer rate. The chips they use for SSD has a very high read-write-cycle rating (you can write over a block many many times more before it dies), and also can be read at a dramatically higher rate than "CF Card" grade flash.

So, math based on the number of chips isn't going to work, you have to find out how much the higher-quality flash chips cost to make before you do your algebra...

That really, really sucks, man. :(

You ought to call Apple up and ask them if you can exchange the unit for an upgrade considering the circumstances. You might get lucky, since Apple stands to get another $100 out of you... never know. :) Good luck with that...

If all iPod users had exactly the same needs and the same take home pay, or if all laptop users had exactly the same needs and exactly the same take home pay your argument could have value.

People have different needs and run different applications, some people do video some just do email and browse, as such we all need different levels of power, disk space, memory and ports.

The guy that does only emails is not going to want to pay for the same power and features as the guy that does video. It would only sell to the guy that does Video and he is the minority of the users, therefore Apple would sell a lot less machines. Not everyone needs or is willing to pay for a MacPro with 32 Gig of memory and 4 - 1T drives.

Apple tries to cater to a number of differnt type of users with a number of incomes. If all you have is 80 dollars that you can afford, you can not buy an iTouch with 32 gigs, all you can buy is a shuffle.

The one ring to rule them all does not apply to computer hardware, sorry.

I do realize your point, and I don't think I expressed what I meant clearly. But for example. Why does a macbook pro offer glossy and matte screens, why do they have aluminum casing only, and why do they only have the lighting in keys in comparison to the macbook. I think its done purposefully so people would rethink buying a macbook pro instead. I do agree, when you said no one has the same budgets...but why not have a product with all the features that the only thing that differs from the other is speed and memory, like the iphone 8gb and 16gb for example.

I think people in the Eurozone care. Not to mention I think most people have a general idea of exchange rates anyway. If not, there's a currency converter in your Dashboard. :D

Thing is the Euro price includes tax. The U.S. price does not. That doesn't make up the difference, but between that and the other factors (Tariffs, Euro economy, etc.) the prices for each market are comparable and fair.

Just as I thought. This was just the minor upgrade that was supposed to be announced at macworld to hold us over until iphone 2.0 is introduced. That phone is not coming out until later in the year. A lot of stuff in fact didn't get debuted at macworld like they were supposed to.
So you have a choice now. Buy the upgraded capacity version of the iphone 1.0 or touch now or wait til later in year for version 2 of the iphone.

Thats an interesting observation. It is true that the iPhone 2 has been fairly confirmed for a due date of sometime in summer 2008 but its feature set has only been a wish-list. But that macworld was supposed to debut a lot more things- that makes sense. Steve did mention that "look- AppleTV Take 2, MacBook Air, new iTouch apps... and it's only the first two weeks of 2008" like we should be expecting huge things from apple in the coming months.

I think many people will be unimpressed with the iPhone 16GB if they already own a iPhone. A new feature set would have made it more compelling to upgrade. Apple did learn from it's last iPhone price drop- they won't be downgrading the price till iPhone 2...

I'm waiting for iPhone 2 :)

Bought my pop a 16GB Touch for Christmas, but hey -- he's 73 so he's got enough music and stuff.

I told my wife, who was itching to get an iPhone at Christmas that we need to hold off a little longer for either (software features, price reduction, capacity increase or the fabled version 2) -- looks like we got features and more space... probably going to buy a couple of 'em now -- VDay is upon us and I can't think of a better way to drop a cool thousand.

I really believe we're going to see iPhones really marching forward so much faster than we saw iPod advancements over the years. The competition is really sweating and I've been seeing some hot stuff lately and some nice commercials. I especially like the the new one where there's a million phones all lined up and falling like dominoes. Phone looks good on tv... not sure if it really is or how it performs, but it's just interesting that suddenly we're seeing so much more competition.

"Don't do tomorrow what you can do today" when the iphone 2 comes out you'll be expecting iphone 3, and your never be happy. Just buy things as you need them, and then when what you have does not suit your needs go for another one. If you always try to be up to date and have everything that's out, you'll go crazy, and broke. I know people expect 3G, but then Apple will limit some of its functionalities to make another iPhone, its never made at perfection, they always design something with a flaw that can be updated, to keep making profits. Real world...its all about the money, don't ever expect anything perfect to come out of nobody.

In the immortal words of The Zoogor: "Boo hoo for you"... Mr. First-poster, newbie, crybaby, BS Artist who's all negative just to stir the pot. Master Troll, begone.

Whenever I see some long involved crap from a newbie, I always check to see just many posts they've made. Generally its either their first (troll) or they've made four or five and they're all the same Anti-Apple-sucks-and-my-moneys-going-to-PC-folks crybaby bullstuff. It is sooooo lame and overdone on this forum.

Advisor: "You know, if we don't drop the price on this, people will have to pay more than they would if we did. We'd be making more money."
Steve: "Oh, that's how that works. Dang."

;)

Wow. Space. Big, big space. Oh wait. Price. Big, big price. :(

$100 more for twice the space? Well worth it IMO. Sure a price drop would have been nice, but it wouldn't have been by much anyway. That and it would have REALLY ticked me off if the new 32 Gig touch was the same price as my 16 Gig when I sprung for it not even two months ago. It may not be top of the line anymore, but at least I didn't get ripped off like early iPhone buyers. Imagine all the Apple Store gift cards they'd have to give out...

Dunno if this has been posted yet but both new models are available on the UK Store....

£330 each for the newest ones - but u have been bitchin bout tht already :D

i'm actually pretty happy with my 8gb iphone. i think 4 wouldn't have been enough, but 8 gives me enough room for a variety of music and a movie, if i want to put it on there. i bought the original 5gb ipod for $500 when it first came out. worth every penny!!!

i'm more excited about the 3rd party software coming (soon?). the updates to iphone have been great but i think it will be able to do a lot more.

Thanks for constantly improving Apple!

I don't see how this can be negative for anyone besides those who just bought their iPhones in the last month or so.

As for the rest of us, a small update does not mean that 3G won't come later, it doesn't mean that Apple hates you for buying their product, and so it isn't a big deal.

I bought two 5th Gen iPods about 2 weeks before the Touch and classic came out and guess what, they still do exactly what I bought them to do!

Unless your 8GB iPhone suddenly died when it heard about the update, and won't turn on anymore, I would wager that it is still just as effective as it was yesterday.

Loebus, did you see these posts?

Bought two iPhones exactly one day too early to take advantage of the 14-day return window. I'm going to saw my own hand off now.

The local Apple Store is going to allow me a swap on my two iPhones despite being one day out of the return window. So I'll stop whining now and start laughing.

I would try going to the Apple Store and ask if you can still upgrade. It seems to have worked for Brixtone. It's worth a shot.

I assume you have extensive knowledge of European VAT laws? I live in the UK and can assure you that Brits do get ridiculously ripped off on consumer electronics. Yes, UK VAT is 17.5% but the price differences exceed the expected increase as a result of higher tax (c.8% -> 17.5%).

UK consumers have always paid a premium. Why? Because we'll still pay it regardless. Until we vote with our feet and refuse to buy the goods we're going to have to accept that UK prices will exceed US prices and even other European prices were VAT rates are often higher (Germany - 19%, France - 19.6%, Belgium 21% to name but a few).

I have only had my iPhone on O2 10 days, can I swap it for 16gb?

You can exercise the fabled 14 day "cooling-off" period which is statutory when entering into a contract. Gotta love contract law.
