Correct me if I'm wrong, but there hasn't been a 500 dollar iPod ever, or at least in a long while.

You're wrong about the "ever", but there hasn't been an iPod that expensive in the last three years.

The 10 GB model of the original iPod was US$499. That's also what I had to pay for my 40 GB iPod Photo, shortly before they reduced the price (and removed most of the included accessories). The 60 GB iPod Photo was US$599 originally, so the 32 GB iPod Touch is cheaper than the most expensive iPod.

Puh.....499$?

well, 499$ for the new ipod touch is a lot, but if i convert the 459 Euros it costs in germany it equals 670 $ and that is a lot, a lot of money

I am starting to think that its not worth the upgrade from 8gb to 16gb. I might as well save the money for the iPhone 2.0

I assume you have extensive knowledge of European VAT laws? I live in the UK and can assure you that Brits do get ridiculously ripped off on consumer electronics. Yes, UK VAT is 17.5% but the price differences exceed the expected increase as a result of higher tax (c.8% -> 17.5%).

UK consumers have always paid a premium. Why? Because we'll still pay it regardless. Until we vote with our feet and refuse to buy the goods we're going to have to accept that UK prices will exceed US prices and even other European prices were VAT rates are often higher (Germany - 19%, France - 19.6%, Belgium 21% to name but a few).

It's just not the VAT that affects the pricing, it's other things as well. How much does it cost to operate in that particular country? How much extra costs are involved? And yes, how much are the people willing to pay.

And lets not forget that GB is an island. OK, so things are not as bad as in the past (what with there actually being a road in/out of the place now!), but I suppose it's still a bit of a pain for Brits to "vote with their feet". Hence higher prices. Living in MA (where there is a, gasp, 5% sales tax), 15 miles from NH (where there is no sales tax) I can vote with my feet quite easily, and do.

Nice!

Bought an 8gb on Friday even though I was half expecting this to be announced with the SDK release. Popped back to the o2 store this morning and switched for a 16gb, well worth the extra £60. Now looking forward to see what the SDK release brings.

I have an 8GB touch, the lowest of the low. This recent update makes me feel woefully inadequate. :(

I am, though, trying to convince my dad to get an iPhone and unlock it so it can be used anywhere, so this update does hlp my argument arsenal...

What a joke, if tought the would do a real change like adding UMTS or something like it .
That is just lame , (but well the 16 bg Iphone is really nice! :D)

learn

Oh Man Apple is here to Shake the world. Nokia, Sony Erricsson, especially Motorola, please LEARN something. Otherwise just start thinking as to how much Microsoft should have to pay to buy you guys. (like Yahoo)

Now, here is the issue most casual observers have, including myself, which you have failed to ponder:

Do the additional parts required necessary to transform NAND flash chips from single-use products to an interchangeable drive (again, these parts are a small logic board, a bus, some I/O and a piece of molded steel) logically justify a cost increase of 2.5 times?

Think on that.
They don't. Otherwise I would expect compact flash cards to be equally as expensive. Since they contain similar electronics (other than the multiple NAND chips). I was just answering the other persons question about using the chips in an iPod Touch as a SSD drive for the MBA, it isn't possible.
A meeting of SSD manufacturers after reading this post:

"ZOMG that kid on the apple rumor site figured out how to make 64GB SSDs for only $400! Why are we still selling them for 1000-1500???

64GB SSD at Newegg

We should read these forums more often! With all the nuggets of wisdom that get thrown around."
SSD is as expensive as it is due to the amount of NAND chips used plus the maker wanting to get some profit. That is all.
That stuff is a far, far, far cry from the flash that has to go in an SSD. You don't want to sit there with an SSD that caps out at 10-20MB/s transfer rate. The chips they use for SSD has a very high read-write-cycle rating (you can write over a block many many times more before it dies), and also can be read at a dramatically higher rate than "CF Card" grade flash.

There are multiple chips in the SSD to combat the slower overall write speeds of NAND chips in general. Think of SSD as onboard NAND RAID. Or you can think of it just like how the FB-DIMMs on a Mac Pro work.

And we welcome you with open arms! ;)

So what do you do when something you want comes out during the Summer tourist season and the ticket prices double from where they are now? My guess is you probably barely break even on a MBP.

I think many people will be unimpressed with the iPhone 16GB if they already own a iPhone. A new feature set would have made it more compelling to upgrade.
Do you honestly think that Apple intro'd the 16GB to get current iPhone owners to upgrade??? Crazy me, but I thought it was entice people (who weren't ALREADY customers) to go ahead and get the phone.

Well, it worked on me. Picked up my new 16 GB iPhone last night ($500) and one hour later sold my 8 GB iPhone through Craigslist for $300. So, a net $200 to double my storage space for music and videos AND get a new iPhone with no scratches on it.

Works for me. :)

Damn!!

I bought an ipod touch 8Gb just 4 days ago.

Awesome piece of kit.

I wanted the 16Gb, but couldn't find one in stock in any of the stores I went in - I ended up buying at Dixons Tax Free at Heathrow on my way to Berlin.

Is there any way of swapping this for a 32Gb version and paying the difference...?

I know it's probably been said like 30 times already...

I bought my 16GB iPod touch less than a month ago (three or four days after they introduced the five new apps), and now they come out with a 32GB model.

However, the prices have not changed, 16GB is still 6GB more than my old 3rd gen iPod and the 32GB model is too expensive, so that makes no difference to me. :D

Good news for those who wanted an iPod touch with more than 16GB though. But I'm sure some of you will be holding out for the 64GB or even 128GB models (just wait a few more months, I bet).

I can't understand why people still care about this. The SDK is coming out this month. Honestly, what 3rd party app do you need so badly that dealing with the current firmware for a few weeks is so horrible?

And the list goes on:

Skype
MSN Messenger (so i can connect to the rest of the world and not that ichat no one has)
Real player
Flash player
Exchange connection
Salling cliker

You didn't net anything. $400 8GB + $500 16GB = $900
Minus the $300 you got back, it cost you $600 for a 16GB iPhone.

Well about freakin' time :)

Re. iTouch: I sincerely thot they'd unveil this at MacWorld SF, and was disappointed when it didn't happen, but I am V. Happy that it didn't wait until Fall, as some ppl have speculated.

Still wish it had actual physical iPhone-style volume buttons on the side, but meh, can't have everything (that's only because I operate my ipod blind a lot...back pocket while biking.) But hopefully someone comes out with a remote in the near future (like the Radio Remote).

On my way to Best Buy :)

Biking w/ an iPod? Asking for trouble (but then I do it, too:D). Without a click wheel, I can't use my Touch, so I have a second iPod (Nano) clipped to the back of my jersey, with the click wheel in easy reach.
