. But I'm sure some of you will be holding out for the 64GB or even 128GB models (just wait a few more months, I bet).

Doubt it...I mean Apple charges 999 for SDD 64GB in the MacBook Air....prices would need to come down a lot.

Maybe in a year, a nice refresh of 16GB 32Gb and 64GB or 32GB, 64Gb and 128(thats seems pretty hopefully)

Okay, do we really need 8 GB more??

movies are about 300-700MB when converted to play on iphone.
music can be huge but reality check: portable player you may only need 2-3 GB.

Not sure how much space contacts/calender takes but can't imagine its alot.

New apps coming soon could be a reason but I tend to try new apps and dispose of those I don't use pretty quickly.

so music 2-3GB, movies average 2 1GB

left over 4GB?

Now a 32GB model iphone would have let me take my entire music collection 25GB and that could have been worth it but 16 GB just leaves me wanting more.

I'll take my $100 and use it for iphone 2.0

SSD, flash memory... those terms aren't interchangable, are they? Don't they represent different products? 64GB in an iPod touch shouldn't cost the same.

I bought the 16GB iPod touch on launch, but had to use smart playlists to fit my 19GB library, and now with <300MB remaining, every time I want to put a new video on the iPt I have to find something to delete. 32GB would have been the perfect size for me... my whole library with room to spare! I want a 32GB 3G iPhone :D

I think I've reached the point where I'd like to know if/when car stereo manufacturers are going to make a dash-unit into which one can dock the iPod Touch horizontally.

Well when you hear those kind of comments by americans time and time and time again... then ya... you kinda start to generalize.

I was on a plane to mexico, flying from the US, and I was reading the magazine that comes with the flight and I saw this ad, it had a big typical picture of santa clause on it. He was riding in his sliegh and had the gifts in the back... a very typical picture... but there was something strange about it... Santa had 2 (not one, but two) american flags on his sliegh. I was shocked? Why to americans think that someone like santa clause (which exisits in many different countries) exists solely for their own amusment, why would he only have american flags in there... why not a canadain flag, a british flag, etc?

I mean... is the North pole in alaska or something?

Sorry... rant over. Flame away!

Everybody knows the North Pole is on Canadian ice. Well... the Russians have been having a little bit of trouble with the concept lately, but everybody ELSE knows. Personally, I think everyone should be concerned if the Russians are making a play for Claus Polar Stealth technology. We don't want another Cold War! :)

I wouldn't take the star-spangled Santa too personally though. It's just a symptom of the fact that you can sell just about anything in America by wrapping a flag around it, and if it's competing with something else with a flag wrapped around it, then you have to wrap MORE flags around it, all this in flagrant violation of something I read somewhere in US law that the flag is not to be used in advertisements or as clothing... Please note that this is not in reference to ALL Americans, thanks, but it certainly works well as a marketing tactic.

In other countries I've been to, with some exceptions, the opposite is true. A Canadian faced with a product wrapped in a Canadian flag, for example, is somewhat more likely to be unmoved or worse, suspicious or cynical of the attempt.

Everyone knows if you want to sell something in Canada you need to make it taste like maple or beer, and have a picture of a mountie or a beaver on it. :) No, not THAT kind of beaver. :p

>I operate my ipod blind a lot...back pocket while biking.) But hopefully someone comes out with a remote in the near future (like the Radio Remote).<

Biking w/ an iPod? Asking for trouble (but then I do it, too:D). Without a click wheel, I can't use my Touch, so I have a second iPod (Nano) clipped to the back of my jersey, with the click wheel in easy reach.

Yup, dangerous practice :) Not about to stop though :) I personally don;t have a Nano, nor have any yet to get one...I htink the iTouch is plenty portable enough. And now with this remote, I CAN operate it blind, AND answer the phone. It's awesome :)

When I'm road biking I ride with a Nano strapped to the stem with velcro. I just try to keep the volume reasonable enough that I have a little notice if a car is flanking me. Luckily, most of the time the only thing I see on my rides are horses and cows in the fields.

Yes - we need 8GB more (at least)

Okay, do we really need 8 GB more??
... music can be huge but reality check: portable player you may only need 2-3 GB.

For me, I need (read "want") a 32GB iPhone: The beauty of the iPod has always been that I can take my entire music collection and not worry about which albums/songs I want to "sync-up".

At 16GB, the iPhone probably meets this benchmark for a lot of users, but unfortunately not for me (I need closer to 30GB).

The iPhone will never be "killer" for me until I can carry all my music (like I use my iPod) *AND* eliminate something from my pocket. (I mean my current phone, not my cash. :)

all this in flagrant violation of something I read somewhere in US law that the flag is not to be used in advertisements or as clothing...

Yup, you can't leave the flag up during rainstorm, but you can use it to cover the sweat-soaked breasts of a barely-legal drunken blonde at Mardi Gras.

The system works.

On eof the [many] benefits of bainc a Canadian...since the iPhone will not be made available here until there's a 3G version, I'm not going to be tempted [read: suckered] into paying the Stupid Tax on one. I can't wait until I see an ad reading "iPhone 2.5, 64 GB, $399. Only from Rogers."

Well at least you have your national priorities in order! :D

edit: I just noticed you're from Toronto, so by "you" I mean Americans; and I mean it in the nicest possible most neighbourly way.

Don't shoot me. :)

I hate the fact that apple has so many different models of one thing with a typical function. There should only be 1 iphone, 1 ipod, 1 laptop...etc. and they should concentrate on developing each one to its fullest instead of making and making models for the heck of it. I know technology advances, but why make 3 different versions of a computer. Just have one model that can do all, not just one that has something the other lacks. Ex. Why does Macbook come in glossy only? so you can rethink and buy the macbook pro? that's stupid, its always about the money. If Apple would make a laptop or iphone with all the functionalities like 3G, gps, ichat...all in one, more people would probably by it.

Whatever its hard to explain...

It is not that hard to explain. Different people have different requirements and a company will try to make a selection of things that appeal to a range of potential consumers.

A company can't make the perfect product for everyone

OTHERWISE BY NOW I WOULD HAVE AN ORANGE 2nd GEN NANO without having to send it in to a place to get painted

(would you like your ethernet port to be on the other side of your machine so when you lie on your couch too lazy to add a machine to your router's wireless security setup, your ethernet cable doesn't have to curl around and get half loose trying to head in an unnatural direction...? no? well flip your couch 180 and answer the question again...)

so it takes a shot at market research to narrow down the infinite possibilities and comes up with its best take at the time on

1) what's popular wish-list and 2) what's feasible and 3) how to price it and 4) how much does it matter to leave this or that off when the bean counters visit the project specs? and 5) how to price it again after THAT encounter.

Don't limit yourself to thinking about one type of shopper or consumer when you think about what Apple "should" do. The hypothetical all-in-one machine that you mentioned in your post would be prohibitively expensive, same as most of us tend to think about say a MacBook Pro with every high-end option on it.

So will I take part of a bread loaf or starve? Personally, I will settle for something in the range that is offered. The perfect bread loaf of bread does not even exist, except in my mind...

I have bought some 16Gb iPod touch as gifts before but I don't have one myself since I have an iPhone. I'm thinking I'd like to have the older and smaller iPod touch with a small, pretty stable collection of just-in-case entertainment. Just put a few favorite purchased movies on it and a selection of all time favorite playlists of music.

So even though Apple just brought out a new iPod touch that a lot of people are excited about for the 32Gb storage, I'm starting to think about snagging one of the little guys (8Gb) before they all disappear!

OTHERWISE BY NOW I WOULD HAVE AN ORANGE 2nd GEN NANO without having to send it in to a place to get painted

I hear ya, I was really hoping for an orange Nano in September. I still get compliments on my orange Shuffle, and lots of people think it's a custom paint job.
You might be interested in trying to win this custom orange 3rd gen Nano. Good luck! I can't enter because I'm Canadian.

Speaking of...

You might avoid the stupid tax for buying first-gen hardware, but you probably won't avoid the Rogers tax. They make Bell's HTC Touch look very tempting. Although in truth, i can't see myself needing more than an iPod Touch and a separate cheap-o cell phone. I don't like monthly bills and prefer to shave them down to a bare minimum.

Speaking of tax, you won't avoid the GST and PST either, for that matter, not to mention the extra premium Apple puts on items sold outside the US for no clear reason. Rest assured, whatever savings you get by waiting for an Official Canadian release will get eaten up by Ted Rogers, Mike Harris, and Dalton.

But hey, at least we can visit the doctor for free, right? At least for now? And at least Rogers provides excellent customer service! And by "excellent" I mean "sort of adequate" which is an improvement over "barely functional" like two years ago.

how much longer does the ipod classic last? IMO it will not see another update. They'll keep it around until the big ipod event in the fall at which time we'll see the touch go to 64 GB and the classic disappear. People will complain for a while because the high-end capacity is gone, but 64 GB will be enough for most people

Then Apple will never see any of my money for an Ipod. I'm a devout Mac user, but I've never owned an iPod as I've been waiting years for at least a 250GB model -- something I had hoped would be coming soon, what with the 160gb model having been out for some time. I have 3,500 CDs and am still waiting for the promise of "all your music in your pocket" and I won't go any lower than 128kbps AAC or 192kbps MP3.

I know a lot of people with 2-3 times the collection I have who also have yet to buy an mp3 player. I know the rabid obsessed record collector is a niche market, but I'd bet it's larger than some people realize. So, I truly hope you are mistaken, as I really would like to experience having all my music available everywhere I go.

Your 100% right, I guess I never thought of it that way.

Yeah, that makes sense.

...and by "sort of adequate" I'm sure you mean "ballz" :)

You obviously know that Rogers is the only game in town when it comes to 3G, so I'm kinda stuck with them. However, I guarantee I will NOT be getting an iPhone (or any "smart" phone) until data rates in this country get shot down from "retarded" to "Just effin' stupid" to "Slightly better than Mexico" to "Just slightly worse than Cambodia" and so forth.

the iPhone is STILL the only network wi-fi device in my house with no 802.11n capabilities. As most know, even one device on your network that isnt .n will cause your wi-fi to run at .g speeds! The iPhone is a wireless home wrecker!!

I use an iPod touch (which lacks 11n capability as you point out). I also use several PC laptops that are 11b, and my MacBook which is 11n.

I can certainly attest that my Apple Airport Extreme has no trouble running all of those devices, each at its appropriate speed. My MacBook is connected at about 300 Mbps as I type this, while my iPod touch is playing some YouTube stuff. My laptop is reporting a 54 Mbps connection. Download speeds on my MacBook are running +20M bytes per second, which is higher than what can be supported by 11b/g speeds connections. I have no doubt it would be higher still, if it were not for the bandwidth cap on my IP connection.

So I disagree with the statement that "one device on a network that isn't .n will cause your wi-fi to run at .g speeds." That is not accurate, at least when using an Apple 11n router. So the lack of 11n on the touch should not be an issue unless your specific router has some issue with it.

So because you can't take all your music with you, you'd prefer to take none instead?

Yeah, that makes sense.

Not to mention, he would have to listen for 4-6 months straight (depending on file quality) just to hear every song in his library. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.

Wake up, people -- you don't have to carry everything with you all the time. Just spend a day or tow rating your library and carry only the stuff you really enjoy listening to. Duh!

A 32GB iTouch would be perfect for me, if it was $299. I hope the price comes down to this level by Xmas 2008 when Steve finally realizes he can sell twice as many of them than he can at the current price point.
