This makes the iPad Air with the keyboard obsolete and it’s even cheaper.

It doesn’t, but it is a good laptop.
For customers used to the iPad or for people who only need a media machine that happens to have a keyboard, the iPad still has its place.
I wouldn’t even be shocked if iPad only customers purchase this as a complementary Mac for the occasions when the iPadOS brick wall needs to be passed.

Get used to 8Gb. They wanted to make this thing inexpensive and RAM prices are only getting worse.

No Touch ID on the base model feels like how they omited magsafe on the iPhone 16E only to add it this year.

I'd miss Touch ID a lot less. it's not a great feature anyways. I have it on my keyboard at home and feel like it always makes me type my password anyways when I start using it even though I rarely shut down

It's a 20w charger and has 2 ports for charging. Why does it need MagSafe?

So you can have 2 ports while charging?

Also MagSafe was never for fast charging.

Some people were 100% certain it would be $799 so this is a pleasant surprise!

Those people completely ignored the fact this would somehow represent Apple’s target of 20-30% of Mac unit sales.

$599 was basically required for them to hit that target.

RIP to my 12” MacBook replacement dreams. Guess it’s time to find an M1 or M2 Air somewhere.

I was really considering buying one because of the portability. Well, being the same weight of the MBA it really doesn’t make any sense anymore. I’ll just go for the MBA M5.

Not really the replacement for the 12" MacBook that many thought it would be.

13" display size, and no significant difference in weight or footprint (actually slightly thicker) from the 13" Air. It's basically just a lower-spec'd version of the 13" Air.

Its price is its selling point, quite literally.

This is the disappointment to me..

It's not the 12" Macbook reborn, in any way at all, unfortunately.

I think that is a pretty good machine at that price, a good Chromebook competitor. Should be really good for basic tasks such as web browsing, Office, etc. I don't need a new computer as I have a MBP M1 Pro, but this could be an option eventually when I need a new computer.

However, my comments stand if you want/need a laptop. Obviously a Mac Mini is a more powerful device for the same price if you want a desktop computer.

I don't see any info about the RAM. If like some comments say it is only with 8GB of RAM, then unfortunately this is a strong pass.

This Mac isn’t for people who know what RAM is. Fits the target market. Serves the “I would buy an iPad but I need macOS” crowd.

I'm rocking a late 2015 MacBook 12 inch as well and that is not really speedy in any way - This would be a super replacement - Not a heavy user at all. Basically need it to store my pictures, surf etc.

So no 120Mhz, no Pro Motion, no compatibility with the new Studio Display XDR... And 599 is very expensive indeed with so little RAM. No backlit keyboard. Battery life barely a business day. Wow...

Yep. A lot of people might never be willing to come in at the price of the Air.

But if you can get them into your OS and ecosystem at a much lower price you might be able to get them to want to upgrade years down the line.

But I use Touch ID for passkeys on a dozen different webpages. Its a big step backwards security wise. I'd have to add a Yubikey or something chewing up one of the USB-C ports.
