CAD $799 for the base 8/256/non-TouchID, CAD $999 for the 8/512/TouchID version...
The refurb M4 Air is 16/256 for CAD$1039, or 16/512 for CAD$1179.
Ponying up a bit more to get a refurb M4 Air makes more sense, but everyone has their own spending limits.
I was really hoping it would be much thinner, but still pretty awesome to finally see it revealed, and I always expected it to be the same price as the M1 MacBook Air through Walmart since that's what it was replacing, so it's great to see that was the case

The best thing about this announcement is the fact those silly predictions about this thing running iPadOS or some silly limitation of being “App Store only” put to rest.

That's probably part of the plan: simultaneously offer a decent product for some customers but also inch others up to the next model.

I think you misunderstand the intention of Apple for this thing.
It's not supposed to be a smaller or lighter, it's supposed to be significantly cheaper.

Students. Exactly who it was designed for.
18 year old me had no clue how to buy a computer second-hand, nor did my scholarship give the funds to do so. Had this been around, I would have bought it and used it my entire four years of undergrad, without a second thought.

I'm happy to admit I've been concerned about this .. never willing to confidently say "they are doing it" .. but I do worry about it.
It's basically a MacBook for kids and schools.

8GB RAM and only 512GB of storage means it is a non-starter for me.
However I think it will sell like gangbusters to college kids and families that want to buy their kids a computer. The price is fantastic given the current economic climate. I think it will be real winner.

This is a surfing/media consumption device and little else at an affordable price. Nothing wrong with that.
If you're a clumsy person, get a set of magnetic USB-C connectors on Amazon for your charger cord. $20. I think at $599, there wasn't much room in the margins to add something only a few need.
Would this be a good replacement for my wife's 2018 MacBook air?

A bit thicker and just as heavy as a base MacBook Air. That plus only 8GB of RAM makes it a no for me - at least for now. But I have to give Apple credit on the pricing. This is still an excellent machine for many.
