The majority of iPad users do not need the Pencil or the keyboard. That's who Apple is targeting. For those that are graphic artists, such as my wife who has the iPad Pro, the Pencil at $100 is a bargain and a great piece of technology. People who need these "add-ons" simply pay more. Those who don't, pay less.
Lol @ "graphic artists". I have minimal uses. I just like taking simple notes with my pro and it's worth it to me. The Apple pencil isn't really some niche device only certain people will enjoy

Please tell me why the 9.7 supports hey Siri when the 12.9 inch with the same m9 doesn't. I think this atrocious slighting of owners of the iPad Pro 12.9 which cost more a mere 4 months ago is u ethical. I can live with the lack of advanced late or the new fancy pants display. But this software restricted feature.... It's just wrong. Does anyone knows what's up with this nonsense?

This bugs me to no end too. What the hack is with that?

Technology evolves.
Yeah, but people don't just buy tech to enjoy it. They buy it so they can feel good about themselves and they want to be able to say "look at me I have the most current iPad, iPhone etc". Whatever new tech that comes out in a year is never quantum leaps ahead of the last one. It's always these small refinements and nice little features that people whine about "you ripped me off because you didn't include it last year!"

Consumers are annoying to deal with

They are scaring the $#!+ out of me with their continued "pc-replacemnt" language. I hope this isn't code for "we're not going to make Macs anymore."
I mean...I wouldn't go all doom and gloom just yet, but it is odd as hell that Apple haven't updated the macs in so long. Like they aren't even a priority anymore. Sky lake has been out for quite awhile and MacBook users have been sitting on the same GPU for years. Apple might SAY the Mac is still their passion but they sure as hell don't show it.

Holy crap.
The new IPP 9.7 base unit is $799 Canadian!
Used to be $50 more then US cost.
Now $200 more
WTF

I'm for sure picking one of these up with an Apple Pencil at the beginning of April, I can't wait!

I was waiting for that 'there's one more thing' announcement, but maybe the iPad Pro mini will be out next year. But do I find the lack of MacBook anouncements disturbing? Maybe the iPad Pro line is threatening their own PC line.
Guess we'll have to wait for WWDC for all the goodies. New Monitor and nMP2016!

Simple solution to the protruding lense / unbalanced back, will be to get a small pack of the clear silicone stick-on pads and place one at the other three corners of the iPad.

I know, it shouldn't have to be a solution, but if you're not going to go with a case that makes up for the protrusion and creates a flat back, it at least is something very inexpensive that can be done.

Well they could solve the protruding camera issue by making the ipad thicker, not thinner. It would also allow for better batteries. I wouldn't mind a thicker ipad if it means a non-protruding camera and better batteries. But do you think they would listen?

Apple today announced a new iPad in the iPad Pro family, debuting the 9.7-inch iPad Pro with all of the features of the existing 12.9-inch iPad Pro, including the Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard support. The 9.7-inch iPad Pro even has a few improved features over the 12.9-inch version, including a True Tone display and better rear and front-facing cameras.

Described by Apple's marketing chief Phil Schiller as "the ultimate PC replacement," the 9.7-inch iPad Pro uses the same display components as the 12.9-inch iPad Pro -- custom timing controller, photo alignment, and oxide TFT -- resulting in a display that's 40 percent less reflective and 25 percent brighter than the display in the iPad Air 2. It also has a wider color gamut with 25 percent greater color saturation for more vivid colors. Like the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, the 9.7-inch iPad Pro's display includes support for the Apple Pencil.

Unique to the 9.7-inch iPad Pro is a True Tone display that uses four-channel ambient light sensors to measure the color temperature of the ambient environment, changing the temperature of the tablet's display to match. The feature goes hand-in-hand with Night Shift, the blue light reduction mode in iOS 9.3.

Measuring in at 6.1mm, the 9.7-inch iPad Pro weighs less than a pound. Design wise, it looks like a smaller 12.9-inch iPad Pro, with four speakers for improved audio and a Smart Connector for use with accessories like the new Smart Keyboard. Inside, there's an A9X chip that offers incredible performance and a long battery life, plus there's support for 802.11ac Wi-Fi With MIMO technology, faster LTE advanced, and the Apple SIM to connect to LTE networks while traveling.

The 9.7-inch iPad Pro has an improved 12-megapixel camera, with Focus Pixels for faster focusing, a better image signal processor, advanced noise reduction, and better face detection. It's the same camera used in the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus, with support for 5K video, 63-megapixel panoramas, and Live Photos. There's also a rear-facing flash, the first flash included in an iPad. Apple has also improved the front-facing camera, introducing a 5-megapixel FaceTime HD camera with a front-facing Retina Flash feature.

The new 9.7-inch iPad Pro comes in four colors: Silver, Gold, Space Gray and Rose Gold. Pricing starts at $599 for 32GB of storage, with 128GB and a new 256GB option available for $749 and $899, respectively. Cellular models are also available in 32GB ($729), 128GB ($879), and 256GB ($1,029) configurations.

The 9.7-inch iPad Pro will be available to order beginning Thursday, March 24, from Apple.com, and in Apple's retail stores, through select carriers and Apple Authorized Resellers on Thursday, March 31, in Australia, Canada, China (Wi-Fi models only), France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Singapore, the UK, US Virgin Islands and the US.

The Apple Pencil for the 9.7-inch iPad Pro continues to be available for $99. The Smart Keyboard designed for the smaller tablet is priced at $149.

Apple is continuing to sell the 9.7-inch iPad Air 2, dropping the price to $399, and the company has added a new 12.9-inch iPad with 256GB of storage for $1,099 for Wi-Fi only and $1,229 for Wi-Fi + Cellular.

Good job on new iPad Pro and Apple Pencil support, Apple!

Now bring the _Apple Pencil_ to the new iPhone 7 Pro!

I don't see the point in a keyboard without a touchpad for controlling a cursor. I don't want to touch the screen for navigation, that's plain stupid.
I would think the point of the keyboard would be for typing. But what do I know

Ultimate PC replacement?

Sure! Does it have support for a mouse? Are they putting in a full blown OS? Kinda need those things...

...But Tim Cook's Mac was replaced with an iPad...and he can do all his CEO'ing from it just fine...so yah, it's a total PC replacement if he can do it.

He's got Angry Birds for those days when those pesky FBI agents frustrates him he can sit back and flip the bird at those pigs.

He also has a Barney and [Apple Team] Friends app so he can watch Eddy Cue sing his next praise on iTunes.

And a Steve Jobs bobble head app he can stare at and tell who's boss now.

/s (only kidding of course)

Everyone here is forgetting the fact that Apple did not mention the battery life of the new 9.7 inch iPad Pro and how thin it is and the display resolution!

Makes me wonder will the battery life stay the same?? 10 Hour battery life?? And what is the display resolution in the new 9.7inch iPad Pro?? o_Oo_O

I have the larger ipad pro and mouse support is very much needed especially if you are like me and use PowerPoint often to make presentations, without a mouse on ios it's just inconvenient and cumbersome to even use it for editing presentations. I'm sure the op is trying to ask himself how the iPad could be a laptop replacement without mouse support, I have my days when I ask this too...

32GB, 4 speakers, 4GB RAM, and a9x easily add up to 100 dollar increase.

Whiner.
I did not see on Apple's web site where is states that the 9.7 has 4gig of ram...or maybe I missed it somehow which is possible. If it does have such...I agree with your take on the upgrade. As for me from an iPad Air 1, it is a no brainer if one likes to have advanced equipment.

Battery life with the smart keyboard connected and the bluetooth apple pencil connected would be interesting....they should release this information unless something is wrong. ..
