Let's be frank. Apple tried that with the HomePod and well...
The problem with HomePod is not the price. I’m still perfectly happy to buy at the original price. The problem is I can’t buy it because it is sold in very few countries.

Apple probably doesn’t intend to sell too many of these.

It feels like a price anchoring product to me, intended to make the current AirPods line up look cheap by comparison.

Ordered for one reason, Spatial Audio, it sounds great on AirPods but i just prefer over ear. The Sony XM4 sound great but i miss Spatial Audio on them.

I really don't care about the price if they sound good. My current headphones were ~1900, and they're decent at my desk when pumped through some Schitt Audio amps, but I really don't know if wireless headphones will _ever_ sound good enough to justify the prices.

If I can get quality wireless headphones, I'd probably pay near 3k.

Regardless, I just ordered a few pairs for the family and I. We'll see how they fare.

I never thought they would announce these with just a press release so close to the holidays. And judging by the posts here, the vast majority are concentrating/complaining about the price. This is EXACTLY why Apple needed to announce this in an event so they can tell the story on why they're justifying the price they're asking for them.

So, this better be like the M1 chip - the claims were dubious until people tried it and became believers.

550$ wait what? For a headphone? WAIT WHAT !?
Fair enough but don’t forget Beats Studio “retail” for $349 and yet they typically sell for $199 at Best Buy. Apple typically shocks the 99% at their price points but eventually the value proposition is realized ans/or prices drop. AirPods Pro, which seemed a bit shocking when released at $249 were selling for $169 recently. For bargain hunters who wait they will be picking these up for $275 a year from now...

I’m just gonna leave this here for people who think this is too expensive...

$500-$600 is a very common mid range price for high quality head phones. I have two sets of focal earphones (in ear, not head phones) that are wired, the Spark and the Sphear S models. $75/$140 respectively. They sound 10x better than standard airpods, and even the $75 ones sound just about the same as my GF’s $200 Beats head phones (she didn’t ask for my advice and just bought them).

If this price is too high for you, you are not the person they are marketed for. Though I do think they should’ve called these Pro or Studio instead of Max. That is assuming they support lossless audio.
First of all, no. Second of all, no. Third of all, no.

The Max is not comparable to Focal headphones. The Focal headphones are ACTUALLY worth $4000. They are professional, sleek, and provide uncompromising audio quality. You are paying for technology.

I think many will disagree with you about the price.

A lot of people not understanding that the price serves two purposes:

1) Bracket in the AirPods Pro price to make that (highly overpriced) product seem more reasonably priced.
2) Serve as an option for those of whom money is not a huge concern, as that's a market to be tapped.

Additionally, I'd add that this price isn't even on the medium-high end for premium headphones. Look up offerings from other major high quality headphone makers and you'll see prices much higher than this.

All of this to say, this product is aimed at a very specific subset of the market and if your first thought is "$550 for a pair of damn headphones?!", you are not part of that subset. And before anybody says that's incredibly elitist of me to say, know that I consider myself part of the the group that wouldn't dream of paying $500+ for headphones. I just know when a product is aimed at me, and when it isn't.

You can't even be serious putting a pair $550 headphones in the same category as the Pro Display XDR in terms of how Apple advertises them. That monitor is not in reach (price-wise) for many consumers. And where does Apple state that these new Air Pods Max are in comparison to headphones over 5 times it's price? I'm waiting? Because what it looks like to me is they are trying to compete with other headphones in it's price category such as the Bowers & Wilkins or the B&O Beoplay H9's which are $500. Not to mention that crap from Bose, the QC35's.
You're the one that brought up a pair of $2,500 Grado as if they should be mentioned in the same breath. That's basically equivalent to what Apple did comparing the Pro Display XDR to a reference monitor. Honestly the QC35s are about the level I'm expecting these to be at. If they were comparable to any studio headphones in their price range or above, I'd expect them to be priced even higher.

I ordered them. If they are great I'll keep them. If I find them anything less than perfect they will go back. At $549 this should be a no compromise experience.

Although, Apple can't get much cheaper. When you go to check out here is what you are greeted with.

Of course no brick (ENVIRONMENT!!) but no Audio Cable? My God they are penny pinching to the extreme. I don't know how sustainable a model this is going to be for them moving forward. They could really alienate some people doing this.
it's for the environment bro, don't you care??!?!

I thought $350 was typically for quality headphones for the masses (SONY & BOSE) but $550? For another $150 I can get an iPhone mini. If people buy this it will only influence other companies to raise their headphones prices.

I'm okay with the price tag.

But if and only if it's lossless on Wireless (at least 44khz 16 bit without any lossy compression, as I'll use it with Tidal)

But if for this price tag I get a 256kbps AAC recompression as with the standard airpods, then no, thanks, I wouldn't even buy for $100.
I bet you won’t distinguish between lossless and AAC 256 coming from the same master in a blind test with matched volume.
Also, lossless bluetooth codec doesn’t exist. The closest is Sony’s LDAC but it’s lossy as well

I wish the ear cups folded in like with the Sony WH series Headphones. They are so much more comfortable when you have them just hanging around your neck and make packing them in a bag so much easier.
