Based on the replies, it’s painfully obvious most here have never purchased high end headphones.

In the audiophile space, $550 is not unreasonable. We’ll see if the sounds lines up with the asking.

These are not geared toward the casual, bargain oriented user; and that’s ok. Not certain how something can be overpriced before anyone has reviewed them is beyond me.

What I find endlessly fascinating is the cycle of Apple releasing a new product, being immediately panned for design and/or price, only for said product to become the de facto staple in its respective category (remember the “cotton swab” memes 🤔).

Rinse and repeat, it seems.

If you think these bluetooth headphones will come anywhere near any audiophile grade headphones you can get for $500, you're smoking crack.

I can guarantee my LCD-2's and DT1990's will walk all over these and laugh while doing it.

Stop trying to defend Apple for being ******.

They were all ready to release these at $399.
Then they saw people actually paid the $129 asking price for a small pillow charger with no power adapter.
How about $499???
$499??? Screw 'em, let's hit them with $549!

Well, seeing as we have absolutely no reviews, no tests, and no comments on how good the quality actually is, you have no idea how good the quality of the AirPods max are compared to the Sony‘s that you were advertising.
Let's be honest: These headphones could sound like crap and you would still find a way to justify it because Apple fanboys always do.

I'm sure they sound just fine, probably even excellent, but I'm not paying a luxury tax because something is Apple. There are plenty of excellent headphones for less $$$

My $1200 Shure’s laugh at this price. All the whining about the price of these is amusing to an audio enthusiast. Apple has actually done something unique, design-wise (though I give the white version 6 weeks before it gets grungy as hell). SQ remains to be heard, but I will wager it’s pretty good.

Lightning cable was arguably a poor choice- USB-C should have been used.

Will wait for the second version next year or two.

I am concerned that they most likely support AAC and SBC only, no aptX. Which means that many sources (most Android phones etc.) will have to use SBC which is going to sound like ****. Vendor lock-in

AirPods Max as in maximizing the money money we take from your wallet.

Meh, I'm not a fan of this style headphone, my Pros are perfect. I would have ordered a new Apple TV or AirTags instantly if they had put those out today.

There are plenty of really good headphones in that price range. No reason Apple shouldn't be able to make one that sounds amazing.
Yep. Apple probably spent 100x more on R&D for these things than any other headphone in the price range. Maybe 10x more than Sony/Bose, but still a magnitude of more R&D.

look good but price is just silly. no doubt people will still cough up the lettuce.

buy a pair of sony XM4's.

For wireless, I think they will end up at the top of the heap. Their engineering prowess with DSP is on full display w/ the Airpod Pros and homepod lines.
I'll certainly be interested to see what reviewers say, if they do push the limits of audio quality for wireless headphones or this price range it'll be impressive... just a bit skeptical that if these could compete with real studio HPs in their price range that Apple would be willing to price them competitively. Certainly people would willingly pay (a lot) more if these were up there with the crème de la crème.

The comments whining about price make me laugh. You have many other options available at lower price points (AirPods, AirPods Pro, Sony XM4, Bose, etc.) but the level of entitlement here is breathtaking!

These are clearly aimed at the higher end market. Sorry you can't have everything for free.
You’re going to be laughing a lot today.

I got a Sennheiser wireless headphones for $379 5 years ago. Those still hold a charge for many hours. And this is battery tech 5 years ago in headphones.
To be fair yeah, batteries in these over-ears are probably much larger than those found in the little buds, my mistake.

and if not, is "environmentally friendly" gonna be a good enough reason for you to accept that they aren't? 😆
While I know you are trying to "poke the bear" so to speak, any consumer electronic device I buy has to have good ratio of value to price that meets my subjective criteria. The engagement of the company into being green or carbon neutral or environmentally friendly is another matter altogether is clearly a plus for all of us, but that is not my main criteria.

I’m being unreasonable for waiting to get them in hand to judge for myself?

A price tag says NOTHING to me about quality. I want to judge for myself.

Maybe stop assuming. Just because someone doesn’t like the price doesn’t necessarily mean they cannot afford it.
Sure , but the comments are far from sensible , I can post hundreds of audio/video products that are very expensive vs the budget options , but they still have a market , are apple allowed to try and design and sell products in a more high end market? if they can offer a competitive product in the 550$ price range headphones , then they will sell , if they cant , they wont , but why so many negative posts ? its obvious the product is not meant to be a mass production product like the airpods or the iphone , it is meant to be a Halo product , that shows what Apple can do at the highend , and as any Halo product , trickle down the features to the less expensive models down the road , and of course have lower volume.

Folks here behave like they were ready to press the BUY if it was 399$ and backdown now its 549$ , when in fact most of the comments about the price are by ppl that never buy headphones for hundreds of dollars and were never the target audience for this in the first place.

Um, Hard Pass. Drop it down to $250 and people might bite.
Of course they would because they would be a steal for consumers at that price. I'm not saying they are worth $550 (I'll wait for professional reviews [but not "audiophile" reviews because those tend to be, let's just say, unrealistic]) but remember Apple's hardware margins are in the 35% range at best (gross). It's possible Apple is pulling higher margins with these but that's extremely unlikely for a new product. It means these cost Apple a minimum of $350 to make (based on gross and not the lower net profit). Maybe they are over-engineered, maybe they are unnecessary but those are different matters.

So yes, selling them for $250 would be an absolute steal for consumers.

I guess we all can’t be audio enthusiasts.

Not for wireless ones. You shouldn't be stuck with 256kps AAC on a $600 headphones. These are going to be like the home pod rather than the Airpods. Also the design is even worse than the price.
Which is why I said “assuming these support lossless”.
Focal has wireless headphones in the same price range as these.
The AirPods have a lightning port, which could potentially be used for an audio connection. If not, and we are stuck with 256kbps (or any “lossy” bit rate actually) then I will agree with you. I don’t think Apple would be stupid enough to limit these at any bit rate like that, but I guess we’ll find out in a couple weeks.
