or you can just buy the 3.5 to lightening that came with iphones....if you dont already have one
This isn't that. The 3.5mm to Lightning cable is meant for both input and output, basically in both directions. That's why it allows the Airpods Max and Solo Pro to receive audio through the Lightning port. The headphone jack adapter only goes one way, it's meant for iPhones to headphones.

As these are likely used at home for most folks this should be a rather theoretical problem. Those of course who walk everywhere with shiny bling attached to them, different story.
You're going to see these in every row of first class and in frequent flyer lounges.

I take it then, you are not an Apple customer? So why are you posting here?

Ive been an Apple user for 20 or so years. That does not preclude me from thinking some of their prices are high. Whether or not I see value in that price is all that matters.

Price is relative, I can look at something which costs 30 bucks and think it’s overpriced. Conversely, I can buy something costing tens of thousands and consider it good value.

First of all the name, AirPods Max? LOOOL

Second of all the price, $549? LOOOOOOL

Apple are a bunch of idiots.

Woven ear cup pads? No thank you. Those are going to get oily and grimy and gross being in contact with hair and skin. They should have gone with vegan leather instead.

The rest of the design is curious. I'm surprised they went with physical controls over touch/gestures.

Overall, I'd say these are too heavy and too expensive. You can get best-in-class cans in the Sony WH1000XM4 for less than $300.

3.5mm audio cable sold separately...you couldn’t make it up! Apples greed knows no bounds.
That's because Apple didn't provide a direct analog audio input. These cables most likely have an ADC built in to convert your analog input into digital for the lightning port....

That said, for the price these should've been included....

Does it support AptX or any other high quality streaming that works with non Apple devices (macOS supports apt-X)
Does it have an USB-C port? It's not visible on any of the pictures (surprise!)
Can the battery be replaced without major efforts? (79$ doesn't answer that question)
Can the earcushions be replaced without major efforts? (Looks like, but no hard facts)

If the answer is NO to any of these: Thanks, but no thanks.

Jony Ive where are you? Glad I got B&O H9 on Black Friday sale for 470 usd including tax...

So I understand you can connect lightning to 3.5mm audio cable to use wired with headphone jack on say MacBook Pro but can you also use wired audio over the in box USC-C to lightning cable ? I want to connect these to my USB-C iPad Pro for Garageband use where bluetooth latency is non starter for composing.
They don't mention any kind of USB audio so I doubt it highly, especially since iPhones can't do Lightning to Lightning so the iPhone would be odd-man-out and Apple doesn't really like that.

They priced it out of the target market?

Surely the target market would be Apple customers? Y’know, people who have gotten used to paying inflated prices for any product with a fruit on it, for up to a couple of decades.
People who think that the HomePod is so expensive.

The best thing about MacRumors is how many people have no idea about the cost of things in other industries. £550 is not that much for premium headphones. I paid over £1000 for my Sennheiser HD800s and you need to spend at least another £500 on a headphone amp powerful enough to drive them.

If these sound anything like as good as other £500 headphones that need an amp they're bargain with all the additional features thrown in.
Well said!

My favorite thing here is everyone asking how Apple will match the NVIDIA RTX3090 on a Mac mini or some future Mac mini Pro when absolutely ZERO of those people asking is EVER going to plunk down the $1499 for an RTX 3090 AIB, especially considering they are yapping about a Mac mini or iMac that costs $699-$1799. The disconnect here between cost, engineering capabilities, profitability and what the marketplace dictates is unreal. The world can handle only so many 12 year olds living in fantasyland and it looks like a large % of them congregate on MacRumors.

I've been looking for a pair of bluetooth headphones for a while.

Sony XM4 - reviews say great sound, crap call quality
Bose 700 - reviews say fantastic call quality, thin sound, buggy software

(I ruled out some of the more "esoteric" options such as the Dali-6.)

These new Apple ones are expensive, but if the "crown" thing works well (the touchpads on the other brands typically don't work with gloves on) and it nails both audio playback and call quality then it'll be unique.

Funny name 'Airpods Max' but I think these will compete well with other noise-cancelling over-the-year wireless
headphones well at this price range. I'm pretty sure we'll see these discounted to sub-$400 range with discounts once supplies become stable. Airpods Pro was selling for $170 during BF sale - 32% discount from regular price of $250. So if one can wait for a deal, these can be great headphones at possibly $375~$400 price range. Especially for people in Apple ecosystems, paying a small premium for the convenience is well worth it.

Airpods 2nd gen were the first Apple products I bought new (from a Costco deal about a 1.5 years ago) and I love how easy and convenient it is to use them with my MBP and iPhone and switch between easily.

If the sound is really outstanding, the price is not that much expensive. I have headphones far more expensive than that ( Sennheiser HD800 , 1250 euros, and it's absolutely worth it ). The AP MAx has also surround sound capabilies for movies, and that's extremely rare.

There's nothing to get outraged about here, unlike some other Apple products.

EDIT : I take back what I said. No cable connectivity ! Nope, I won't buy these.

This product is an Apple flex, pure and simple.

They're moving the price bar up, like they did with the iPhone Pro, AirPods, AirPods Pro, and the Apple display and stand.

Thankfully, they still offer Air and SE priced items, which seems like the place where I'm headed with future Apple purchases.

That said, these things are expensive, but not that expensive when you consider the above products, and what already existed before each of them.

These will sell, and sell well because Apple's target demographic has already been determined to be able to afford them.

These sound really cool..... but I would never pay $550 for headphones. I know some will and they will ultimately probably sell, but good Lord....
