What Struggle?

I suspect that apple is struggling with how to maintain the iPod's relevance.

???? Wow do you come to us from an alternate reality? With the 10's of millions of these iPods that will sell in the next few weeks I am sure that Steve Jobs is struggling for iPod relevance all of the way to the bank, much to the delight of Apple share holders.

I saw the Touch coming with these new specs, but I never would have ever predicted the Nano cutting the video out. This is/was a mistake!

you can't view videos anymore on the iPod nano, but you can still do Photo Slidshows out? I find that odd

there should be three different articles MR!, so that we can vote positive or negative.

$299 iPod touch is awesome; everything else nothing NEW!

$99 Apple TV is also awesome if it works as advertised!!

My guess is video will come in the the next revision of the Nano, while running the same OS, but look slightly different. And Nano that just came out today will either get it for a $15-25 to get it, or you will be SOL.

ipod touch with camera :D

Finally i'm gonna buy it next early year , with a camera :D , every thing :D:apple:

but definitely iPod nano sales will take a hit; but Apple is happy if everyone is upgrading to $229 iPod touch

i see the iPod nano as a upsell to iPod touch; very clever tactics by Apple

Not a bad update except for the Nano. If I was in the market for one, I would be looking for an older model.

iPod Nano = Epic Fail

1) No clickwheel
2) itty bitty "touch screen"
3) no video
4) no capacity upgrade
5) and final insult....same price for waaaaayyyyy less functionality

Wow, this is the worst possible outcome especially after the last Nano design-wise was as perfect as I could hope for. I hesitated on buying it ONLY because I need a 32GB version and I was hoping for one today. Instead Apple is herding us sheeple to the "touch" which I don't want.

I am sick of Apple's "can't leave well enough alone" approach lately. There seems to be a war on size, buttons, I/O ports, etc.

Very very disappointed with the Nano.....

This is probably my biggest disappointment of the iPod touch. The camera is a crappy resolution, but still better than nothing and it does good video. But I have no idea why Apple is sticking to that awful shiny back. I was really hoping for either the glass like the iPhone or the iPad/iMac style brushed aluminum. I hate having to have a case for my iPod, but with that back all it takes is five minutes in a pocket to be a scratched mess.

Still the retina screen makes up for it all. I'd pay the $250 just for that upgrade and having 2 cameras and a mic makes it a no-brainer.

So they realise that people wanted buttons on the shuffle, and then took them away from the nano

Great logic

Also, did anyone notice the album name on the now playing screen in the keynote demo? I'm pretty sure it had an ellipsis on it, and wasn't scrolling around... That's gonna be a right pain on a screen this small.

Amen!!! The Nano is for us people to use while jogging/running or working out at the gym. This new one is going to be a pain in the ass to use without looking.

Agreed. I've got my 16GB 4th gen nano, which IMO is slightly better than the 5th gen, and is leagues above the 6th for my usage.

Honestly, this whole calling/3G thing is a joke. Apple won't compete with their own product. And VoIP is not the "easy-Apple-style", it would be confusing for most casual users (what, I can call sb, but I don't have my own number??)

Same for rear camera. I think to keep a certain distance to the iPhone, there will be only a little VGA-front facing camera, enough for Facetime. That would explain the thinness of the iPod Touch as well.

Yes I know we all have our nice little wishes, but from a realistic point of view, we will probably see:
- Retina Display
- Gyroscope (as the iPod is a popular gaming machine)
- Same form factor (3,5)
- 64 GB max (128 is unlikely)
- Front facing camera

That's my guess, just in my experience with Apple updates.

Pretty much what I predicted... well except the rear camera, but this little thing is not a camera replacement anyway (where the iPhone 4 camera gets quite close to).
Oh year, and A4, but this was quite clear. Forgot to mention...

New Nano

The nano still has a spot in the world, with Nike + integration and no need for an armband, I am looking forward to getting this to replace my gen 2 nano. I prefer the trident size shuffle, but I can see the desire for the buttons. All in all I think the nano got the best upgrade today.

I feel that the reasoning behind the chrome face (instead of a brushed face) is two fold:

1) Chrome face is shiny. Helps initial sales in stores (also can be laser etched easier)

2) Chrome face goes kablooey fast. Hurts secondary sales in the used market. This is good for Apple as it builds in obsolescence.

As for glass, I think the iPhone really has a glass face because 1- it's rectangular and 2) glass is radio transparent. But I'm not too sure really because the antenna is supposed to be on the outside on the iPhone 4.

Back to school promo

The Back to school promo runs until Sep 7 but only offers the older iPods. Is that intentional or just a store page not yet updated?

Hi,

http://www.apple.com/ca/ipodtouch/features/more-features.html

Scroll to the bottom.

32GB and 64GB have Earphones with Remote and Mic.

8GB is just Earphones.

Clearly Apple wants you to buy the 32GB if you don't already have the mic earphones.

s.

you might want to close your browser and re-open it (refresh the page) because I don't see anything in the US store or Canada about 8gb and 32gb models shipping with different headphones.
